Japanese House No. 1 - Timber Frame Construction Series - "Tatemae" Continued - January 2021
In this series, we are in Hayama, Japan where we are participating in a new Japanese house build. The house design is a mix of traditional Japanese carpentry set on top of a modern concrete slab. This was done as per the request of the client and architect who decided on this style. The house is situated on a hillside overlooking picturesque Hayama.
House Information:
Land Area: ~310 sq. meters (~94 tsubo) (~3337 sq. feet)
Building Area: ~120 sq. meters (~36 tsubo) (~1292 sq. feet)
Total Living Area: ~102 sq. meters (~31 tsubo) (~1098 sq. feet)
The house has a living room/dining/kitchen open plan, 2 bedrooms with additional guest room, toilet room with vanity, washer/dressing room, Japanese split shower with bathtub, and an attached wooden deck.
In Part 5 of the House No. 1 build, we finish building up the entire house to include the rafters or Taruki (垂木). We also install the main ridge beam or Munagi (棟木) which is a small celebration for the carpenters as this is the final piece that has critical joinery. From beginning to end, the Tatemae (館前) took two days which is incredibly fast for a build. The few days before were installing the foundation and moving the wood to the worksite. This house build took approximately 6 months from acquiring the wood up to the point of the customer moving in. This house will last several lifetimes if it is well maintained. The consturction style and carpentry skills that went into this house is by far some of the best in the world.

Thankyou for showing us this level of detail. I've seen many Japanese framing builds, but they are often very brief and without description. Thoroughly enjoying this series, and very envious also. At this time when travel is restricted, I long to be back in Japan - so your videos are great therapy.

What are the two red stripes on your hard hat mean? Lead carpenter?

Actually this hard hat was one of the ones that was left over at the workshop that I quickly grabbed and used for the Tatemae. The two stripes means lead carpenter or senior. This is a designation used at the carpentry school only, its not a industry standard.
