What’s even more disappointing is that Sailor Moon was a huge success on Toonami. So it’s not like “girl power” shows couldn’t succeed in the states. If Toonami aired the episodes of Cardcaptors that WB didn’t air, it would have been a bigger hit in the states than it was. After all, the biggest criticism the show got was how Nelvana “cut” so many episodes, when in reality all the episodes DID get dubbed into English. It’s just that the WB killed any potential success with the confusing way they aired the episodes.
@TheOldMPClub3 жыл бұрын
People who neglect to learn the executive behind the scenes stuff from this period tend to sometimes get confused. Nelvana is guilty of the localization that tried to rip out some of the original's themes, mind you the anime itself played a bit lighter on grounds the manga dared go. CCS's real biggest hurdle was ending up at Kids WB under Jamie Kellner who believed all those prejudices that shows attracting different ages or genders then you wanted was a bad thing. And then things only got worse when he became head of Turner and infected Cartoon Network with that nonsense. Had CN's people have got it first, they'd probably have aired the Nelvana dub in order.

KidsWB was extensively involved with Nelvana's dub to the point that they even dictated casting decisions. I suspect that's why the show was recorded at Ocean instead of in Toronto, like every Nelvana anime dub since. Vancouver shares a timezone with LA, making it easier for the network oversee production. Their involvement also explains the attempts at shifting focus to Shaoran. They were behind Pokemon and later, Yu-Gi-Oh. Girls weren't their primary audience and they picked up a show that didn't star a boy. They definitely tried to fit a square peg in a round hole and in hindsight, it was a weird decision. Even the Cardcaptors merchandise of the era reflected its original intent. Child actors aren't uncommon in Canadian anime dubs. You mentioned The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which starred Emily Hirst. She was a teen when that was recorded. Andrew Francis wasn't any older when he was the lead in Monster Rancher. The most ambitious was probably the original Beyblade, also from Nelvana. The entire lead cast, which stayed the same for all 150 episodes and its movie, were all teens.

I think on Kellner/the WB's part they were concerned with just getting a marketing tool than a faithful dub. Because that's how Kellner rolled. Shows were just tools for him to sell ad space for and god forbid if they wanted boys watching and got girls instead, show was a failure.
@The98597thMark3 жыл бұрын
But if KidsWB were *that* involved from the outset, it begs the question, why didn't Nelvana just produce the whole show the way WB wanted? That's usually how it works, (including every other Nelvana dub). The US is the major market so what the American network wants is what the kids get no matter if they're in the UK, Canada, Australia or wherever else. It doesn't make commercial sense to dub the whole series when WB only wants half of it. I can only guess Nelvana took the money, went ahead and started producing what seemed *to them* like a TV friendly hackjob dub. Then WB saw what they were doing, balked and demanded basically a total re-work. Whatever happened, it's definitely one of the strangest TV dub sagas that's for sure. I don't envy the scriptwriter who had to (try to) make both continuities work.
@IMissBionix3 жыл бұрын
@@The98597thMark If you bought the rights to a 70-episode series and your U.S. broadcaster only wants 39, why toss away the rest? Yes, the U.S. is the single biggest English-speaking market, but it's not the only one. Australia, Canada and the UK are not an insignificant audience. Many of Nelvana's recent original shows struggle to gain meaningful distribution in the U.S., so if those manage to survive, an anime dub could certainly still be lucrative. I don't think Nelvana retrofitted their work. There's some indication they might have actually produced a pilot in Toronto prior to Kids WB's involvement (most notably, there's a promo for the Cardcaptors toyline featuring a Kero plush toy voiced by Eddie Glen rather than Matt Hill). Additionally, the CRTC's production database lists Cardcaptors under two entries, submitted several months apart - suggesting it might not have been made in one go. Unfortunately, we'll likely never know the full story. Back when Clear Card came out, I tried asking a bunch of producers on the show if they'd like to talk about it (in a friendly, non "YOU RUINED IT FOREVER!!" tone) but got nowhere.

Personally, I liked the Nelvana dub's VAs better than the re-dub VAs: Carly McKillip's voice as Sakura had a great tone/quality and it was well balanced with higher pitches (but not shrill) for the comedic/girly scenes. Maggie Blue O'Hara's (Madison/Tomoyo) voice is pleasant to listen to and sounds elegant (without the stereotypical rich girl affections.) I think that she would have done well acting the original storyline if given the chance. Rhys Huber was a good choice for Li Shaoran, and I would have loved to see what he would have done with the original storyline. Matt Hill as Keroberos is BOMB! His voice was fun and playful, fully embodying the character. Kari Wahlgren is a fantastic VA and I liked her as Fuu in Samurai Champloo and Celty in Durarara!, however, as Sakura in the 2nd Movie, her voice was just so different from Carly McKillip's lower-timbred voice quality that it made Sakura sound annoying and even shrill (in comparison), especially to those who were used to McKillip's voice. I remember facepalming during the final 'I love you' line in the 2nd movie. It may have been better if she pitched her voice a little lower to match the same range as McKillip's, but, doing so would have just underscored that a different VA was used. Producers should have just finished the "hack dub" with Carly McKillip. It would have been great if the original storyline was redone using the Nelvana dub VAs back in the early 2000's. But since that's not going to happen, maybe they can get all new VAs and try to dub the original storyline now? I think Cardcaptor Sakura had a great story and amazing characters. I would like to see an English dub remake done properly.
@karmiya-plays3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I still re-watch the dub sometimes, along with the original Japanese version, and I think it's still a lot of fun! The voice acting was actually pretty good, and if only it didn't have the censorship and cuts (and the occasional attempts to make Syaoran into Main Character #2 rather than Love Interest) I think it would still hold up today fairly well. It isn't overly cheesy like other dubs of the time (looking at you, Sailor Moon; though to be fair the original was also kind of cheesy), and maintains a lot of the more understated humour and slice of life joy that CCS is so good at. It's not perfect, but it's genuinely fun and did a lot right, too. A lot of newer dubs which are trying too hard to be accurate sound weird in English. In no English speaking country do nine year old girls have those cutesy, sometimes breathy little girl voices, and trying to imitate it in the newer dubs doesn't work. I feel like the team working on Cardcaptors genuinely cared about the show and wanted to get it on air for kids in the English speaking world. The fact that they included all of the more 'girly' episodes rather than cutting them out and reducing the series length tells you a lot. I really appreciate your treating the censorship as a reality of the time period rather than raking the dubbers over the coals, too! I certainly wish that the censorship hadn't been there, but it was genuinely the only way these shows could have been dubbed and aired on TV for us to watch as kids. Our only other alternative would have been...no anime at all? That would have been far worse!

Here in Latin america, the show had a great and faithful dub, all the voices sound really close to the original, and they didn't censored anything in the show, (not even the thing with Sakura's parents), that's why here is a really popular Anime, a llt of 90's kids grew up with the show and everyone loves it and still remembers it to this day, and hearing the English dub feels...so weird (why is Tomoyo's voice always cursed?). I've noticed that, in general, a lot of classic Animes english dubs are usually changed a lot and censored to the point that it doesn't even makes sense, but here in Latin America, many of those shows got really faithful dubs and they are still really iconic and loved to this day. @@cauapereira1019 that's because Cardcaptor Sakura distribution rights were picked up by a Latin American dubbing company called ArtWorks, who have dubbed anime like Attack on Titan and Kemono Jihen for Funimation, and also redubbed Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (and managed to keep the original voiced fo Edward and Alphonse) and they also obtained the rights for dubbing Fairy Tail. With Sakura Cardcaptor they corrected some audio problems, brought back Kero's VA to re-record some dialogue and dubbed the second and third openings and endings And just on last year's December, ArtWorks announced that they finally got the rights to dub Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card, a project that was put on hold despite being announced back in 2018, and they said they will dub it into Brazilian Portuguese and Neutral Spanish. Though sadly, for the Neutral Spanish version characters like Syaoran, Tomoyo, Fujitaka and Touya will need new voiced for a variety of reasons

Honestly, I could take or leave the rest, but I want the Matt Hill from the original "Hack Dub" to reprise his role as Kero. He brought a real 90's mascot energy to the role that I always loved. Honestly, the best dub I could think of is the Hebrew dub. Every character was cast perfectly, every voice nailing it, and aside from minor mispronunciations (Sayoran's name being pronounced as written (Sa-Yo-Ran), Clow pronounced as Cla-ow) it's pretty faithful to the original series, even maintaining the same OPs and EDs just dubbed. If that dub was anywhere online I'd highly recommend it, just to hear the characters voices (though if you'd look for סאקורה לוכדת הקלפים you might find a few episodes on KZbin, The whole show isn't available anywhere I'm afraid).

The Vietnamese dub is awesome as well. The songs were changed into Vietnamese lyrics, but all the voice actors were nailed it, they sang well. they expressed the emotion well too, no cringey at all. All the background music was kept in its original form. I can vividly remember the time I watched it in 2008-2009, I was 7 years old and I was so curious why Shaoran liked Yukito because they were both boys :D Even though the prejudice over men's love or something like that at that time wasn't as opened as it is nowadays, they don't change the characters' relationships at all. That's how accurately the Vietnamese dub is. So happy that there are dubs from other countries that share the same spirits of keeping its purest form like that ^^

It honestly makes me sad how my all time favorite anime will never have a good consistent dub. The "chance after chance" sentiment at the end really resonated with me, because not only is it true, but in every chance it's always, ALWAYS fallen short. Even among the "better" of the dubs that were released for this series, there have always been actors that sounded miscast. I've never been a fan of Funimation using the Tsubasa cast for Syaoran and Sakura. Not only did Jason and Monica play different versions of these characters that bear no resemblance to the original Sakura and Syaoran, but they both sound too old in the roles, especially Jason. I would love for a definitive consistent dub of the original 70 episodes to be released, especially to justify the over $200 pricetag I paid for NISA's release, and also because it really is the worst of offenses that the Animax dub has somehow become the definitive dub (there are inconsistencies in not just pronunciations in that version but also accents - and there are droppd lines in this dub that had to be subtitled in - it's a mess!). I won't say I don't think it will ever come, but my hopes aren't high for it 😔

CCS was one of my first manga and it was my first subbed anime. I wanted to watch it in english, but even at 10 years old the name changes and mistranslations (Toya calling Sakura a dinosaur instead of monster) were so jarring. Thankfully, the website I was watching episode one on seemed to have a corrupted file. I thought the laggy screen was an inherent part of the dub so I decided to give the sub a try. Other than having to pause to read translators notes, thankfully I could keep up with the dialogue and still watch what was going on. This anime was my first conscious introduction to gay characters (though I didn't know the word for it), so gayness was in the back of my mind and associated with magic and fiction. "Ah, I see. He's attracted to him because he's magical." " She's attracted to her because she's magical." A few years later when gay marriage was a topic of debate I realized, "Oh. It's not just an anime thing." TLDR: I need to rewatch this and watch Clear Card already. This show is fucking iconic. We stan lgbt+ normalization. Plus, that aside, it's just a really good and cute show

If there are to be more CCS projects in the future, they'll most likely be picked up by FUNimation, so if the first series and two movies were to ever be redubbed, it's probably best for FUNi to handle them just so we have brand consistency.

Thanks for this explanation! I really only know the Japanese original, the Nelvana, and the Pioneer, so I recently saw clips of what must've been the Animax and was *so* confused. Looking back and after hearing the others, I don't mind so much the voices of Sakura and Syaoran from the Nelvana version, they felt appropriately young. If only the writing and the character's personalities (and random Valley Girl accents) weren't so wrong. Truly painful. What was weird at the time was CCS was one of the few animes where the DVDs were ONLY in Japanese and I don't remember seeing either movies on sale at physical stores. But it's kinda cool to see how impactful the series has been in the West even when the dub situation was such a dumpster fire.

For me the only issue I have with the Funimation dub is the choice of casting Monica and Jason as Sakura and Shaoran. Their voices in Tsubasa really don't translate well for CCS. Monica's voice just isn't what I'd picture Sakura to sound like in English. Jason's performance as Shaoran was pretty lacking imo. I can really feel him pushing in a lot of scenes, to balance Shaoran's supposed voice, his expressions in the moment, and his own range. Aside from those two, I think the rest of the cast is perfect! I especially love that Toya and Yukito/Yue are also the voices of Bakugo and Deku respectively in My Hero Academia.

Omg, the fact that those two are Kacchan & Deku is so funny to me. That just made my entire day. Lol But yes, I totally agree with you when it comes to Monica just not sitting right for me as Sakura. It didn't fit imo.

@@naru-bunny Hahaha yeah! It's kinda funny how the actors play childhood friends turn rivals in one series and bromance buddies in another. I only recently started watching MHA and found this out even later. But yeah, I love Monica in a lot of roles, Sakura is not one of them :/

I was always a fan of the anime since I was a child, but I never knew that we had 4 dubs! I thought we always had two, and honestly, Clear Card has to be my favorite. It seems to be as you said, the most consistent. I think they did a good job on this one!
@Nocturne223 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue was the way this dub was edited when it was first released, with the way they cut out so many episodes. CCS is absolutely dependent on foreshadowing in its storytelling, so by removing that, you get a giant mess that makes little sense.

I've watched several dubs and my favorite (aside of the JP original) would be the catalan dub, though that may be nostalgia since it is the one I grew up with... but it does get many points by dubbing the songs rather than replacing them or leaving them untranslated.

Owning all the different DVDs that came out in the US and hearing all the different dubs I would personally say having Funimation dub the original series would be the easiest way to make it so everything is consistent

I was born and raised in the Québec province of Canada. We here had aired Cardcaptor Sakura in its French dub, on Teletoon channel. The highlighted changes were that, the exception of Sakura, Kerobero, Yue and Clow Reed, all characters’ names were replaced to a French one. Intros and outros were sang in French. Aside these changes, EVERYTHING else was kept intact: all the romance was present, no scenes were cut, the phenomenal original soundtrack was played, etc. It was basically watching the series in its integrity but dubbed in French. The French voice actors did a great job. It was truly a faithful dub, in my humble opinion. Even to this day, I’m attached to this dub and I would watch it again!

I wanted to hear Clear Card, but sadly the two leads take me out of it. There’s a wealth of actors who can play younger male and female voices at FUNimation nowadays. I get the fun they can have with fans of Tsubasa I guess, but to me as someone who only watched Cardcaptor Sakura, it’s weird hearing these kids sound like adults.

I still prefer 💖the Cardcaptors English Dub opening and the series because I remember watching the original Cardcaptors back in 2002 and I did started to like this series from Nelvana because even though the series is from Japan but at least they have a proper theme song intro and ending too. I also prefer the character's voice and the dub of the story line because the original version of Cardcaptors has too many romance, crushes and gay feelings so I understand why Nelvana decided to cut a few scenes and dub the voices to make it suitable for kids👍. That's also why I buy thses DVDs from Nelvana as the Cardcaptors series were show on the, USA, Australia and the UK on CITV.

I totally enjoyed you introspective on this animation. You made me realize that the authentic art and character relativity of the show never really shined through in 1 of the 4 dubs that is why it was always struggle to be a success, and I agree. This animation is my fav, and I'm not even into animation. It was such staple in my childhood, and I occasionally look back at my fav dub, the nelvana dub. I think the reason why the nelvana dub was my favorite was because I feel in love with those characters they were so relatable and not very far fetched which is why I didn't like the other dubs as much. Sakura Avalon was a little Audrey Hepburn to me from California who enjoyed sports and was adventures, like me. Sakura Kinomoto was very sweet, emotional, and young and made it hard for me to relate to her. But I understand why the authentic art didn't shine through because of all the cut edit, which I understood why others would enjoy the uncut edit dubs more because it holds more true to the authentic art of the manga.
