Honestly, dubbing has always been a bit of a weak area for me, and Gintama I can see why. I think something that would be great if they did something similar to the "Urusei Yatsura" BBC dub, where pretty much the entire script and jokes were rewritten and it was absolutely AMAZING.

The irony is that people made a fake quote saying that Watanabe prefers Bebop in English. Not only is that an urban myth, he ACTUALLY has mixed views on the dub. He said parts didn't have enough emotion. Bebop's dub isn't the "only good English dub". It never was. It's not even Animaze's best dub. Best dub of 1999/2000? Yeah, no shit. We had DBZ's shitty dub amongst other shitty dubs. Bebop genuinely was a labour of love. Better than ANYTHING after it? No. Stop with the nostalgia. A certain John Oppliger even attacked it early on so it's not like it doesn't have critics. Granted, his critique was based on fallacious reasoning, but still.

i don't really have the nostalgia factor regarding this anime because i never watched it as a kid, so i don't particullarly feel anything for the dub. but i have indeed watched the anime in both english and japanese, and i prefer the japanese. im not a sub supremacist or something. i just like the japanese voices for this anime WAY better

See... I appreciate what this video tries to do but after all these years, it's clear that those complaining about Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid's dub have... never watched it. At least, not in good faith. They trot out the same Patriarchy line again and again ad nausuem yet never seem to go into as extensive criticism of the dub as you do. Not even the "I'm not into women or dragons" line because lord knows that they're either "apolitical" or Right leaning by any other name. This has allowed for very bad actors to insinuate themselves as outrage merchants amongst Anime fans because it's worked for games, it's worked for Star Wars and by god, are they going to drag Anime into this. Like look at these videos detailing GamerGate and tell me these don't seem like tactics done by those trying to drag translators through the mud: kzbin.info/www/bejne/on28iHumnK6if9k kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWe3o36hoLt4ntU I honestly wish that you would make a comeback because I feel like you're the sort of level-headed guys who can see the bullshit for what it really is: bullshit. It's hard but evil flourishes when the good do nothing.

I could hardly imagine that any anime voice actors and actresses would recreate the scenes in video games. Probably Mass Effect 1-3. For instance, Cristina Valenzuela would probably voice FemShep and recreate the Tali and Legion confrontation scene and use the renegade choice.

Biggest issue with the dub is that it sounds muted. Like, everyone sounds like they are just reading lines while sitting behind a table or something, they aren't acting them out. The background sounds are also very quiet for some reason. Probably an issue with sound engineering.

I haven't watched anime vids outside of Bob Samurai in a long while and this was a really well made video and to add to your point about how dub actors who were there for a while but I never found out untill recently was Mallorie Rodak. I really love her Frieren voice and she might be a big reason why I like Frieren at all if I'm being honest and I discovered her because of that show and the funny thing was, she was in anime dubs since 2014 and has 200 roles to her credit, but didn't even know who she was until Frieren. On top of all this, I think anime dubs have come along way since the same LA and Texas VAs from the 00s, Netflix does a great job at hiring different actors who aren't usually in anime even if they got your VA usuals and dub actors now when I research the shows have a lot of people I don't even recognize. I didn't even know about Zeno Robinson until Dragon Ball Superhero and the Kanata from MF Ghost dub VA I didn't even know, that show is full of actors I didn't hear of until recently. There is also another fact to shove in that a lot of prominent dub VAs from back then don't really pop up that much anymore, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, Troy Baker, Mathew Mercer, Crispin Freeman, Liam O Brian, Mary Elizebeth McGlynn, Michelle Fahn, Dave Wittenberg, Yuri Lowenthal, Karen Strassman, and Steve Blum hardly ever pop up in anime dubs anymore. They are probably in some big video game or cartoon now so if you were sick of hearing those guys, now you only hear them on occasion in anime and if dub actors were as bad as the weebs claim they were then try explaining guys like them popping up in bigger works now. The only dub actors from back then who are around now off the top of my head are Michelle Ruff, Johnny Young Bosch, Jamieson Price and Wendee Lee. Most Texas VAs from the 00s are still around though. I also don't get why some people who complain about the same dub VAs being in everything are totally fine with every black guy in a cartoon voiced by Phil La Marr, Kevin Michael Richardson and Kary Phayton. Invicible uses a lot of regular cartoon VAs like Clancy Brown and I had to take a shot every time Fred Tatiscore voiced someone, stuff like this is fine by anime dubs using the same VAs are evil? And even if the same VAs are being used unless if the dub really messed with script or something, it's usual the material in anime that holds them back. I mean Crispin Freeman is trying but Itachi trying his hardest to sound like a deep philsophical character where everything he says is trying to sound like some deep metaphor is just going to sound funny no matter who is saying the lines. Spike Spencer is trying is as Shinji Ikari but I think I would just tolerate Shinji more if I had didn't directly hear his dialogue being spoken, reading his dialogue would make him seem somewhat more tolerable. Anyways, great vid.

Loved watching this when it first came round in the UK. For a long time I thought that Japanese people had ' big eyes'? And how short the school skirts were for 13? Year olds! Talk about cold knees! In the UK, this would be a no no. Also recently, there's a advert and I swear that the jingle (?) is sung by the same singers that did the intro' for cardcaptors!.

I think one of the problems with some recent Dubs (especially Funimation ones) is that they don't do accents well or at all, like in D. Gray Man. There are people who introduce themselves as from a specific European country or city with a country (like Liverpool in the case of D. Gray Man), yet still have the default American accents, it can be very jarring to viewers outside of the US. Although even worse than that are exaggerated accents, like the awful cockney ones in Black Butler, there's nothing worse than a really bad accent done by American voice actors, in fact it's so bad in Black Butler (a Funimation Dub) that I never actually finished watching the "English" Dub of that show. As a UK native myself, the accents can either improve (if done well) or ruin a perfectly good Animé show or movie. I can forgive some accents in the original Japanese version because they are not used to speaking the English dialect natively at all, so it sounds quirky and almost comedic at times, when it rarely happens. It's the difference between trying to sound convincing and not really making the effort to sound regional, which I count as "lazy dub acting." I think this is also down to the Director or Producer of the Dub not really caring about the international audience as well, but I may be wrong. It may be down to the script writer or editor too, but I'm not sure how strict they are with staying faithful to the original Japanese dub.

In my teens i came across FLCL when it would air on cartoon network. Usally i would turn off the tv and go to bed, as i had alreadh watched my "shows" but the animmation style was so wild. I had to keep watching, the fact that it was all over the place really had me hooked. What kept me was the english dub. It felt so "normal" and sounded so natural. Heck back then i knew nothing about anime, i probably just assumed it was written in english for an american audiance. It looked so clean and crisp. I was hooked right then and there! It also felt so taboo at the time. I dont know how to pin point it. Maybe it was the coming of age and me being 15 at the time? It felt so sexual in nature yet innocent! I eventually tried watching other anime shows with some success but truly never got into anime. Nothing compaired to this show. And nothing ever felt this exciting to see. And nothing seemed to match the quality dub this show had.

I love the nelvana dub very much as a kid watching it on kids wb.. .so forgive me but hearing it being called hacked dub does.. sting but I can safely say this. .the nelvana dub.. is a gem of it's time to those that grew up watch it. ..before we got more arcuate english dubs. However I don't see nelvana dub coming back for a recast.. .especially considering the two main leads were kids back then.. so I don't know how their range would be now as adults should they were to come back.

I don’t see how there is any context where sjw and cuck can be used in Hajimete no gal or patriarchy in dragon maid. If people genuinely think that’s what localization is all about they’re on a different planet. People can say shit like speed racer is shit for changing names but hey he can still kill a ton of people with little to no censorship star blazers can still keep the wave motion gun and ships being fired at and all the original music and opening dubbed. People like to say lots of older dubs are shit when in reality I can sense more respect for the source material than most modern dubs. Granted most of that has to do with age people who dubbed those shows are boomers and weren’t failed theatre actors searching for anything else, hell you can say for stuff like the sailor moon dubs it was almost entirely dominated by actual Canadian voice actors granted the viz dub does a pretty good job of getting voice actors who do more then just anime. Yet they can still be called crap because of name changes? And you know not changing actual context. It’s too far gone at this point gekiga manga are really the only place where actual professional translators have migrated to. I’m not gonna keep watching these shows if the same 30 people are used in everything or I can’t even trust them to localize dialouge right. That’s the issue I have. At least with companies like geneon and Bandai when they released stuff I could trust the cast would fit, and hell the dub would yknow be actually translated right. Actual translators aren’t going away there’s too much nuance in text. But if AI can be used as a tool to get more nuanced sentences, and ward out bias towards the work I’m fine with it Robert woodhead flat out admits he does that now. There’s also the issue of typecasting which doesn’t deny it doesn’t happen it does, how many times have you heard rial or marchi or grelle in a harem? Or just bias preventing licenses like Justin sevakis flat out admiting he won’t license MD Geist because the place he worked at had someone who liked it and compared it to working on scat hentai (which he actually did it’s very weird) idk man there’s just a sort of bias that needs to be completely weeded out. It really only started notice after ghost stories showed they could get away with it. Those are my thoughts

This was my show to watch on kids WB. 9 year old me with access to ebay on the family desktop computer bought all of the DVDs of the original japanese version, i remember popping them in and being shocked it was in japanese not realizing what a dub was at 9. Anyway i gave it a chance and of course fell in love with the original. I would draw my own posters with crayon and hang it in my bedroom... and decorate school notebooks. Cardcaptor Sakura was MY jam. I have the clow circle tattooed on my back. As bad as the dub is, simething about Sakuras dubbed voice really brings me comfort, for 9 year old friendless me, thats all i had.
