During the Olympics, the company that made his blades gave a pair to a little girl who lost her hands and legs to meningitis and he showed her how to use them. I looked up that girl she’s now a Paralympic swimmer. They asked her who her inspiration was and she said Winter the dolphin who lost her tail and learned to swim with a prosthetic. No mention of he should not be named.

@@ImmersiveSportsScience But was he? I always questioned whether those special blades would give him an edge versus regular legged people - clearly he was a gifted athlete against those with the same prosthetics, and clearly a hero having battled such personal challenges as a birth defect … so perhaps my question is kinda stupid. Such a terribly sad story. I don’t know if he killed her on purpose, or merely because he was in fear, but her life being taken was such a tragedy.

@@hlowrylong This is one tragic incident where one young individual with potential and a life ahead of sadly lost hers. In terms of calling him a was a hero of athletics (hence the was), is going to be different on your demographics, and I can only answer this point from a certain persepctive. I live in the UK and in the years into the lead up of 2012 and months after he was everywhere. In interviews and most notably he was sponsored by BT for their fibre optic broadband, to which in competitions he wore their logo on his all-in-one. And yes I realise that calling anyone a hero for some where all they do is play sport is problematic.

In terms of the blades their is an interesting philosophical argument about weather our wether it can not improve his performance beyond that of an able bodied elite athlete. he was fast, no doubt about and at one point was the fastest man in the 400m in South Africa, a country that over the years has been known to produce relatively good sprinters over the distance. To give you a clue how good SA were at this point in time Sa relay team w/Bladerunner were DQ'd in the Olympics but had their appeal heard and thusly re-enstated to the final, which was controversial because they were the fav's to win on paper. It is important to note that blades do provide certain advantages to athletes compared to able-bodied individuals, but they also come with unique challenges and considerations. The reported advantages are: Energy Storage and Return, Reduced Impact; greater shock absorption and energy return and finally they are Light in Weight. But the disadvantages to blades depends on the level of disability and individual differences, but: Balance and Stability, Lack of a heel action, the lack of certain muscle that can help in speed generation. (yes the glutes do a lot of that work, the muscle of the postural chain = Calves, hamstrings and Glutes all help with this). Although there is a potential for the double amputee to perform better than the average athlete or when compared to elite athlete , in reality the research does not bare this. Where compared to able bodied athletes on average the able bodied athlete runs fast faster produces more force and is generally more energy efficient with a few exceptions. The question then to answer was. what happens if we use similar technology of blades and was able to give them to able bodied athletes? Nike during the 2010's started the development of what would be called the vaporfly marathon shoes (a carbon fibre plated shoe[and other technologies]) that allows marathon runners to received a 4% energy efficiency advantage on each footsteps (depending on what Nike research you read). Although the Company Sucany who got a pair tested said it was more like 2.5 - 3% . This technology has now been adapted by many companies for Track Spikes or so called 'Super-Spikes', although the advantage they give to an athlete is yet to be quantified. Contrary to popular belief the blades used by Oscar Pistorius for the Olympic cycle(the 4 years leading into Big O and Olympics/parralympics itself) were different because laws set out by IAAF (the body that runs Athletics). These rules were different to that of disability athletics. These laws locked Oscar in to a blade that were certain height. This is something he complained about after being beaten in the Parra's 200m Final by a double amputee Brazilian athlete.

I had bb guns as a kid, and we were told that it was a training gun for us. We were told that if we "accidentally" shot one of our siblings, that we would have our guns taken away. Then, we were given real guns, and were trained on how to use them. We were raised around them, respected the power they had, but had a reasonable fear. But my grandma was completely different. She was scared and paranoid one day and a local dog was scratching at her door. She didn't know it was the dog, thought it was an intruder. She grabbed her shotgun and blew a hole flat through the door, and the dog. I remember that being a life lesson for me.

That was my thoughts at the time. I could never understand how he was claiming he thought the person was an intruder and that she was asleep in bed when he went to the bathroom, simply because of the arguing heard PLUS the screams before and during the gun shots. The neighbours thought a wife had just seen her husband shot so they concluded that the person screaming was terrified and whoever did the shooting MUST have heard her as well. Oh, yeah, I can imagine his parents' obsession with his physical handicap would have been so extreme so as to preclude his becoming well-rounded at all. I mean, it's hard to raise well-rounded people without them being handicapped. And his resolution of his ``handicap'' made him almost superhuman, in the sense that he had no humbling experiences in his life to teach him about life's hard reality that ``you're not the most important person in the world.'' Yet another instance of where technology actually did more harm than nature did. I mean, he had been born handicapped, so, where would he have been without technology? He would have had to have a career where he relied on his mind; like, something in the sciences. But, he became a famous athlete instead? Kinda freakish, no? Well, a subpoenaed witness in the ``doomsday mom'' case got out of testifying because I think she said she had been following the case? Like, each witness, when it comes time to take the stand, has to swear they've not been following the case. So if the witness says they've been following the case, they can't testify. (But I would think they'd then be held in contempt of court and go to jail for a few days for that.)

He confronted the intruder, invited him to leave and fired off a warning shot as one is required to do. Thd man fled. Only Oscar really knows what happened that night, but I don't believe his story. My utmost sympathy for going through such a series of traumatic events! I can understand how you might feel, as my wife and I experienced a similar incident about a year ago: She heard a noise in the kitchen at just after 5AM, thought it was me but had the good sense to check first without exposing herself, then woke me up with the most chilling sentence I have ever heard in my life, "There's someone in the house." I rushed into the kitchen where the skinniest guy I have ever seen stood on our dining table (he was so thin he fit between the burglar bars over the window above it). Neither my presence or being caught red-handed seemed to faze him; in fact, he proceed to threaten me with a small pocket knife (it looked like a Swiss army knife). I don't own a firearm, and I know how dangerous any knife fight can be, so I refrained from engaging, and as I paused to assess, my rescue came racing down the passageway: Our normally loving and placid Labrador had heard me yelling, and barked in the deepest, harshest voice I had ever heard her use. The burglar noped right out of there, back the way he had come, through the burglar bars, and ran off before I could get outside. In the meantime, my wife had had the presence of mind to call our neighbour, who arrived just as I opened the front door, and together we ensured that the criminal was no longer a threat or in the vicinity. We have since taken certain additional precautions to ensure something like this does not happen again, but we have had a burglary recently where power tools and other items were stolen from the garage.

You sound as though you are describing where my father used to live [he died in January] and the intruders where he was were often armed. The police advice was to make certain you had somewhere safe to lock yourself in, ring the police and wait for them to arrive, NEVER attempt to deal with the intruders yourself [the result was that after he died and my brother sorted out his stuff - mum died a couple of decades ago - the repeated burglaries meant most of the personal belongings had been stolen. They even took the photo albums of family members' weddings back in the 1920s and all our childhood photos. Only thing is, dad lived in New Zealand, violence isn't just in South Africa but seems to be in many different countries [and where dad is many of the burglars were actually illegals or overstayers looking for items to sell - a local farm had a flat onsite for workers to stay in if they needed somewhere, the thieves literally took both the toilet and the kitchen sink - and many had smuggled in firearms when they arrived in boats.

People in the comments are saying it's not but uh. No. It 100% is. Especially when paired with his other actions and Reeva's death, it's a textbook case, I don't know how people are acting like it's not. Also, most men with a temper (at least, on a par with Pistorius') are abusive. My guess is that she either didn't want to have sex with him or told him she wanted to break up with him and that ended in the resulting fight and her death. Obviously, I don't know. But considering how abusive relationships tend to turn out, that's my guess. I'm also a little disappointed in the team for not delving into the aspect of abuse more, especially it's nature in this case and how it's reflective of many other spouse/partner killing spouse/partner - usually the male involved killing the female involved. I understand maybe they didn't want to risk a lawsuit but I feel it's a major point in this case and Simon could have added a million "allegedlies." Maybe I'm expecting too much but that's why it's so important. If many people don't understand the nature of abuse like this, they won't understand how sinister Reeva's death really is, which is such a shame since she so strongly advocated for abuse victims. I don't blame the team but I do hope they handle situations like this more delicately in the future and try to shed light on a rampant problem--especially that a partner is most in danger when trying to leave an abusive partner.

@@carnuatus Yeah, this is one of the most textbook, obvious cases I've ever heard. He shot her four times and didn't realize once while she was screaming that she wasn't a burglar? And he conveniently didn't notice she wasn't in the bedroom, of course. Seems like SA either have a shitty legal system or he was handled with kiddie gloves because of who he was. I can't think of any other reason why he was allowed to have a gun in the first place after the previous incidents. Imagine a man blatantly assuming he'll get away with murder even after his neighbours hear his girlfriend screaming while he shoots her. After a fight that several people heard.

Excellent narrative, Emma! I'm also South African, and I followed the story from the moment it appeared in the news that morning. There's one thing that's been bothering me for a bit. In my mind, there are three possible reasons why Reeva would have gone to the toilet and locked the door from the inside. One, she might have gone there to hide from the alleged intruders. However, this doesn't make sense as she was already in there before Oscar claimed he thought he heard someone, because he claimed he mistook her for an intruder while she was in there. Two, she simply went to the toilet to use it. Her bladder was pretty much empty, so it can't be that she had to go but hadn't had the time yet. The toilet was clean when her blood ran into it, so if she had gone, she would have flushed it, and then Oscar would have heard it flush, or at least heard the water run back into the cistern. It doesn't make sense in this scenario that she would have stayed in the locked toilet cubicle after using it, for as long as it took for the cistern to refill. So she couldn't have used the toilet in the time just before she was shot. The third possible reason was to get away from him. I still believe the third reason is what happened, and that he is an egocentric, manipulative narcissist who believes the rules don't apply to him.

Backed up - in my view - by the way he casually fired a gun through the open sun roof of the vehicle. This was reported on at the time, as was the ''accidental'' [in which case, if he was so nervous he accidentally fired the gun, how did he get a fire arm licence for the pistol in a country with strict laws on the subject] shooting in a restaurant. And that is ignoring the fact that the friend thought it was fine to bring a gun into the restaurant and then to bring it out - obviously with the safety off - and hand it around to others to handle. I remember thinking that he was being treated as a celebrity who didn't have to obey the law in the same way.

I know I thought often about you not being able to see your grandmother (or “nan”) during pandemic lockdowns and travel restrictions and I grieve the lost opportunity for you. He said that he shouted at the intruder multiple times... and she just sat on the toilet ignoring him? She did say "Hey, it's just me, go back to sleep."? Who wouldn't respond when someone starts shouting, "I have a gun, get out of my house!"

Simon we weren't a couple but I did have a male roommate that behaved an aweful lot like Oscar. I can tell you right now that is emotional abuse. All we'd need was the gaslighting. The specific form is always different but the roots of the behavior is always the same; a toxic mixture of feeling threatened by the success of one's partner, shame that they aren't good enough, and an inability to confront that shame. At their core men like this are deeply fearful and in their eyes their only worth is what other people think of them. Oscar's father likely made it worse. We have such an expectation in our society that boys don't cry, they don't grieve, they aren't afraid. It counts squarely under the "don't mess up your kids" rule you established. In this case Oscar would have been pushed to be better and tougher because of his legs and either deprived of care or yelled at when he didn't. You make a narcisist of this sort by making love for your child purely transactional and dependant on achieving something and then setting the bar higher and higher so that they can never live up to expectations. When that happens, they have no self esteem of their own. They need constant approval and attention to their needs, but they never reach a moment of self clarity nor do they think very hard about what they want or why they want it.

@@tabby2957 yeah this goes beyond mere spoiling. narcisim of this nature comes from a cycle of attaching shame to failure and love to achievement or obedience. Its not spoiling.

@@JoshSweetvale I have to correct you. This isn't spoiling I'm talking about. This is a cycle of attaching shame to failure and rewarding a child when they do something for you instead, for example, don't make the school team of your favorite sport? The route to making a narcisist involves humiliating the child and making them ashamed of failing to make that team. At the route of all narcisim, even the violent kind, is shame and an existential fear. Not only are they ashamed to be themselves, but other people's attention is the only reason they exist. They can't exist just for themselves. They're like shrodinger's cat. They don't exist except when they're being observed. Like some bizzare quantum being.

Sorry for your loss Simon. I am a bit confused though on demonetizing. Jen can’t you edit out Simon’s oops so the video stays within YT’s arbitrary rules? Or would the videos lose too much of Simon’s personality if you did? Y’all deserve to keep every penny you would make! Especially love you Jen! We all enjoy your input in every episode! I love that two writers came together to make this episode so epic! Thank you Emma & Liam!

A big part of the problem is that YT isn’t remotely transparent about what is and is not allowed to be monetized as well as the fact that they are *extremely* inconsistent with what they allow different channels/creators to get away with. There really is no way to edit the videos to ensure monetization when the rules are secret and unfairly and unequally applied.

@@kdkorz10211 thank you for explaining! I knew YT’s rules were arbitrary and I knew they were kinda underhanded in how they treated content creators, but I didn’t know about the rest.

I really hope you keep this channel going despite the KZbin woes, it's a good take on the genre that avoids the murder porn gore fest aspect that others seem to drift into. I also still think the German NSU murders would make an excellent topic, where a group of 3 Nazis go on a 10 year racist murder spree through late 90s early 2000s germany. The trials are long over (even though they were a spectacle of their own), there is a lot of police incompetence or worse, and some shady behavior of internal intelligence agencies around it. Police never connected the dots until two of the three killed themselves (there's questions around that too) after fhey botched a bank robbery and we're close to being arrested. The victims families are also worth looking at, a lot of them went through quite an ordeal with the investigations and the media attention after it all went public.

If she used the toilet and flushed it, he would have most likely heard it, since it was so quiet at that time. That would have been a clue that it was her, NOT an intruder. That, for me, is enough to say that he knew that it was her in the cubicle and that he was shooting out of anger at her.

Depends if the bathroom was next to the bedroom or across the hall. No way I'm hearing a flush 2 rooms over with a fan on. Since they were rich, they probably didn't have paper thin walls that the US has either.

When they say they broke their back, they absolutely mean they broke their spine...but you can break your spine in ways that don't damage your spinal cord. My nephew just last month broke his spine. Several of his vertebrae have collapsed into wedge shapes instead of square shapes, literally crushed in on themselves....but he didn't get any spinal cord damage and didn't even need a back brace. He's right back to being reckless again.
