Love the colors! It is a great pattern too. I checked the book out of the library after the last video you did with this pattern, and I ended up using it to make a memory quilt for someone out of 9 very plaid shirts. Delivered it to them today. I used a white shirt for the snowballs and arranged them so that they made little "squares" which looked a bit like 4 large plaid flower petals with a white center, which was perfect for the family receiving it. Thank you for all that you share.

It's genius, you are a genius! From the moment the floral fabric swatch was on your table, I loved it. I felt disappointed when it bit the dust to the pile on the floor. But.... my, oh my - your decision to bring it back for consideration and now decided to use it as binding is brilliant. I AM LOVING it!! The quilt will be beautiful. Enjoy the process of making the quilt❤

Hello from Australia 🇦🇺 I have to wait up on Friday night to see your new video each week…can’t wait! After you showcased Sharon Holland’s Utility Style quilt book I asked my library to order it for me and very quickly now have it (brand new) in my eager little hands🤣 I am so glad you chose Comfort (love that quilt). The entire process of choosing colours and fabrics is part of the love that is “sewn” into the quilts we create and for you Cathy it is such an integral part of your “quilt stories”. It would be difficult to choose a fave video but your “quilt stories” are magical. Thank you again to you, Paul and the colorist (and your other daughter) for bringing comfort, essential knowledge and joy to mine and so many others’ worlds. Annette 🇦🇺💕☀️

Golly, I can’t wait to see your finished quilt! Love where you’re headed with the color choices. I’m totally interested in making anything out of linen, but am nervous about how well it will hold up to lots of use and laundering. Maybe you would be willing to do a “show and tell” about this and show a before and after laundering quilt sometime. I love how freshly ironed linen looks, but I’m not sure how the crinkles will look and feel in a finished, laundered quilt.
@TheCatBirdQuilts4 ай бұрын
I will have to do that: video about linen quilts before and after! Linen is surprisingly durable and resilient to washing. It DOES rumple and crinkle significantly, though, so if you want a flat, smooth linen quilt, you'll have to press it after washing and drying.🤓👍🏻

Hi Cathy from Wisconsin :) So much fun watching you do this! . I tried putting a color way for a new quilt the past couple of days, while trying to embrace the process instead of stressing over it. That's a challenge for me. Lol, my husband would walk by and see my picks, and go nope. That happened several more times. Anyway, I think I found the picks. I will just sneak up and spy on them a few more times to make sure they are still all getting along and make my heart happy. I can't handle asking a binding to join yet, I need a breath, lol. Your fabric selection is beautiful, so calming :)

I thought "you can incorporate the patterned fabrics in the backing or as a label" but the binding option is pretty awesome as well. looking forward to your "quilt in a weekend". For me the biggest challenge is the quilting since I need a lot of breaks in between. All the rest: absolutely manageable in a weekend. You'll make it work, I'm sure 😊
@TheCatBirdQuilts4 ай бұрын
Thank you, Julia! ❤️ As you know, there are just SO MANY STEPS in quilting! The quilting part is without a doubt the biggest challenge (I need breaks too, else my back or shoulder starts talking to me!) but the quilt sandwich and binding are no walk in the park either! 😱
@caw32584 ай бұрын
Yes, it's going to be outstanding! My comment is about how being able to make a quilt in a day or a weekend is predicated on the essential decisions of what fabric will be used. A great deal of my satisfaction is quilt-making is assembling the right fabrics for the right quilt, and I can't do it in a rush and still enjoy it. Your pleasure in making that a quick quilt would be greatly diminished if you had to include all the decisions and the prep work that goes into using scrap fabrics in that one block of time. You would be complaining bitterly to Paul and to your colorist that it takes all the fun out of the accomplishment, right? I so love the way you are passionate about color, it's just fun to watch.
@TheCatBirdQuilts4 ай бұрын
Thank you Ca!❤️ Agree 100%! If I also had to decide fabrics and make the quilt in the same weekend (or even just decide the fabrics in a rush) it would steal ALL my joy and eliminate my favorite part of the process! Hopefully this weekend I'll still be able to enjoy the "production" part and get the best of both worlds--I guess we'll see!

Different isn't always better. Sometimes, the one you enjoy making is best. And why you'd want to make an entire quilt in one weekend ? When I make a quilt, I'm making an antique for the future.

Thank you for the encouragement to make what I enjoy (even if it is a repeat!) I have thought a lot about doing a quilt in a weekend (or a day) and wondered at the appeal since quilting is a slow craft, by nature. Then it occurred to me that if I had small children, or didn't have a dedicated space for sewing where I could leave works-in-progress out, or if I was a full-time worker with limited free time (lol--that's actually true of me!), or if I was headed to a quilt retreat, I might want to make something that I could complete in a weekend. ❤️

@TheCatBirdQuilts I know something of work. . . I do that so I can quilt. Quilts are a message spoken uniquely. It was a running joke, I always made 9-patch. Traditional w muslin, reproduction. Amish, w alternate squares, sashing, cornerstones, 3" or 6" , on point, and sew on. Some of your stuff would look so cool 😎 in other colors or other forms of textiles. Japanese mosquito netting, hand dyes, silk, endless variables. I hand-piece or machine sew other projects. Queen size to miniatures. Hand quilt and play at machine quilting. Squares planned on a grid are the best. It's like stringing beads or counted cross stitch. Yes, you can make a quilt in a day (ish.) It is a great way to practice the skills necessary to complete a work. Eventually, we get better at what we do, and then we find our voice. . . Lately, mine says 3/4 inch log cabin strips are the way! Or, cut all that fabric into 11/2" squares, and then make a top from the scraps instead. I guess it doesn't matter ultimately what pattern you sew, but for a girl that "has so much to say." The melons can't just be persimmon and beige, linen. I see sage and sunbleached turquoise, with wood worn grey, and a hint of sparkle. Your quilts have a touch of the Poppins, sometimes we didn't "hear" what you said. Repeat, sil vous plait. Sometimes, it just sounds better in pink. 🤔

I really like how you line up the colors and take your time considering them. Also, how you take advantage of other peoples reactions to those colors. The print for the binding surprised me. It does add the finishing touch, though. A much needed reminder to me, that the amount and the placement are just as important as the colors.

Thank you, Tanglezest!❤️ I'm really interested (myself) to see how the print works as binding--hopefully it will work out like I imagine!

I like using a print instead of a solid on my binding because I think it hides my stitches better...Love that floral to add a bit of feminine to a solid top...also...as it's going to be a nap quilt, have you considered using Minky on the back? Some Sticky Solvy strips will stop it from stretching on the edges. Love your videos.
@TheCatBirdQuilts4 ай бұрын
Thank you, Laura! ❤️ I've only done a few prints for bindings, but I do like it as a fun and interesting option. I hadn't considered that it hides stitches but that is certainly a plus! 🤓👍🏻 As for the backing, I'm actually doing all-linen on the back as well...it will be heavy, but hopefully breathable! But minky sounds like it would be SO snuggly!

Kathy, please reconsider putting some pink or pinkish orange in your quilt. I think that it needs it. I love the colors of fabrics that you have for it.

Love your binding choice. It’s perfect! interestingly I have made (still deciding mind you) similar analogous choice for the quilt I am working on. Have fun making it!

Kat, another viewer/patron made a linen quilt with a similar analogous colorway and sent me photos via email...it was lovely! I was encouraged and it validated my choices in this video! ❤️

Hello from overcast Vancouver Island, BC. Canada. Your colour palette reads a gentle feeling to me. Nothing is jarring, just snuggles. And we won't have to wait too long to see the finished quilt. Yeah! Will you get it long arm quilted?

Yes. I love this "gentle feeling" color palette as well! And it is linen! Can't wait to see the finished quilt.

Sorry, SORRY, I didn't catch anything you said in the intro because I was LOOKING AT THE QUILT TOP BEHIND YOU MORE ON THAT PLEASE. 😲 😀 But then the defining of "nap quilt" brought me back. As a short person, those ubiquitous 50x60 throws are SOCLOSE but not quiiiiiiite big enough unless I'm perfectly still--not to mention they're close enough in measurement long vs. wide that it's a frustrating, not-fun game to find the "long" side. Let's make nap quilt happen! ...Ope, no, now I'm staring at the stars behind you again. ;)
@TheCatBirdQuilts4 ай бұрын
I'm one block, some sashing--and maybe borders--away from finishing that Quilty Stars quilt (for Paul! 😍) I truly think the "Nap Quilt" should be a thing. At least 60" wide and 72" long (minimum 70", could be a titch more.) And square throws are beautiful but irritate my soul to actually USE. I need a rectangle quilt, please. OBVIOUS rectangle, please (for the love!) for the reason you mentioned and probably 10 more...reasons which, as we know, I'd be happy to share if given the floor.😂
@stefflcus4 ай бұрын
@@TheCatBirdQuilts By all means! I'm happy to commiserate re: Why Is This Not A Rectangle Dear Lawd I Can't Believe We Have To Explain This To Y'all. Yay Quilty Stars! I can't wait to see it, if Paul allows it. :D

I usually do too! For the quilt in a weekend video, though, I don't want to "cheat" (really just take shortcuts) and do anything in advance other than pick my shirt fabrics and prep them (ie starch them.) 😊

This video read my mind, essentially finding the right size quilt, I have never understood why the standard throw size is not slightly larger. After watching your linen shirt videos I was so excited to start buying thrifted linen shirts to make a quilt. I haven’t had any luck finding men’s shirts but I did find a some linen dresses, I can’t wait to start breaking them down to see how much fabric I get from them.
@TheCatBirdQuilts4 ай бұрын
Thank you, Rene! I'm glad to know I'm not alone in the struggle for the "right" sized quilt!! I'm eager for you to break down your dresses to get fabric for quilting---quilting with linen isn't for everyone, but those of us that love it, LOVE IT. ❤️

Will you have enough of the floral print to do the binding? I do really like it a lot! Hope to see how this all comes together.
@TheCatBirdQuilts4 ай бұрын
I will! It will take a shirt back, a full shirt front, and part of another shirt front to do it, but if I measured correctly (and subtracted the right amount lost in the joins) I should have over 300 inches of binding and I need 292 (which includes 20-in extra!) Isn't that crazy?! So much fabric in a shirt!
@TheCatBirdQuilts4 ай бұрын
Yes, Celia! I measured my shirt using a 2.5'" binding ruler and all I'll need is a shirt back, one shirt front, and 1/2 of the other shirt front.🤓👍🏻
