While you were away, I found my first Denim and Flower shirt! ( I am have squealed.) Almost as exciting, the store was having a sale, $5 to fill a brown paper grocery bag with clothing. Needless to say, I had a blast: 11 shirts, plus some items hubs and I will wear: 4 pristine tees, including one with a cute Ben & Jerry's motif, and a pair of summer jammy pants. That's 32 cents per item; absurd.

Always fun to go with you to the thrift store. That burgundy polka dot shirt would make an amazing inner border on a blue & white quilt! I love the 'pop' of an unexpected band of color (yes, I was dragged, kicking & screaming out of my comfort zone & now go for the 'pop'). I too, just pieced out my first Denim & Flower shirt & ever so carefully removed those marvelous linings to add to my next scrappy quilt. Keep up the great work!

I finally went thrift shopping for men’s shirts and now I know why you like quilting with that fabric. I found myself “petting” the shirts as I walked by them. They feel so wonderful. Thanks for all you do. And Paul does a great job with the camera and supporting everything you do.

As a thrifter I would have thought you knew that it's best to shop for the opposite season. When it's cold EVERYONE is shopping for flannel so there won't be much. When it's warm EVERYONE is shopping for linen (if they like it) so there won't be much. Shop out of season and you'll find lots and for cheaper prices. Supply and demand--fundamental principle.

It is true. BUT I have often found (at least in my nearby stores) that as people clean out their closets to put in new clothes from Christmas, the old stuff gets donated and quickly fills thrift stores! I cannot tell you how many great sweaters I have found at the thrift store in January shortly after Christmas. Then again, since it was Jan 1st, I may have jumped the gun just a bit! 😂😉

Hi Cathy. Welcome back. I was so pleased to meet you and your girls at the pumpkin patch in the autumn. I am still collecting shirts (cotton and linen and flannel) each time I thrift. I currently have a flannel and denim quilt on the go, but I have almost enough linen for when I start on the next project. This week I went for a visit "home" to the coast where there are a couple of my favorite thrifts that have a color that is 79 cents and another color that is $1.25 each week. I was excited to find some linen shirts and some large men's linen pants all on the markdown colors. I will also say that I often find flannel in the men's pajama pants if that helps. Can't wait to see what you make next! PS: I also found a 55/45 linen/cotton twin sheet and a 100% linen pillow sham that were $1.50 for both, so that was a bargain! Not to mention, I had been wanting an extra large ironing board and I found a newish looking Rowenta Pro one that retails for over $200 for $3, so I only had to buy the pad and cover. As a sewist and thrifter, I felt like I had won the lottery this weekend 🤣

I went thrift shopping the other day and a most of the good shirts had polyester or spandex. I didn't buy any. There was a gray XXL cotton that had tiny hammers on it, but I didn't want to pay 6.50 for shirt I might not use. They priced it 12.96 and it was half off day. I think their prices are too high though. I always enjoy your thrifting videos. ❤

Lastol, elastane, lycra, spandex .. all mean stretchy. I would prefer cotton polyester fabric to cotton lycra fabric because the polyester blend will be less stretchy than the lycra blend.

I get that, but as long as you don't stretch the fabric while cutting (or piecing) it's usually fine (ask me how I know! 😂) Cotton poly on the other hand---pins, starch, lower iron temperatures, won't fade like cotton, etc. But then again I bought 2 of those and I'll use them anyway! LOL. Guess I'm just a rebel. 😘

I noticed those flannel shirts are scare right now! I need some yellow and green for my collection. I am going to do a log cabin on a foundation, maybe even quilt as you go. I noticed some of the flannels have quite a stretch to them so thought this would be best. I am working on a dress shirt scrappy log cabin variation and the fabrics are sewing up beautifully with no foundation. Love your content!

Hi Cathy,I think that Lastol is a polyester fiber that is stretchy like Spandex. I think that another name for it is Elastane. But I could be wrong. I really liked that yellow striped shirt.

Yep, you're right. Lastol is a synthetic stretchy material, like Lycra or Spandex. I've been avoiding it because I worry that it won't take a hot iron like cotton does.

I have used shirts with both Lastol and Elastane but I do try to watch the heat setting on my iron so I don’t scorch the fabric!

Everyone, please do not support ridiculous prices at thrift stores. If those items with insane prices stay on the shelves and racks the thrift stores will get the message and go back to true thrift store prices. We also have a chain thrift store in East Tennessee that myself and several friends have stopped shopping at because we can get clothes on clearance new for the same price and sometimes cheaper.

The flannel will appear in July. Heard a funny story today about a woman using flannel sheets while wearing a flannel nighty--she got stuck! LOVE your thrift store haul video, Cathy! The prices have risen in my local thrift stores, also 🙁. I occasionally find Denim & Flowers shirts, or similar type shirts but today there was an entire section of these type shirts - lots of them! I was late for an appointment and had to go, but I’ve never seen that many of that type shirts - you would have loved it! Very few of them had the half-off price tag though. I am slowly moving along cutting up gingham shirts and will soon be ready to begin piecing my quilt - inspired by you.😊

I made a flannel quilt early in my quilting journey. It was all with flannel yardage. 8” square blocks and I used a blanket for the batting and a flannel sheet for the backing. My oldest son loved it because it was heavy. He took it with him when he moved out. When he married, he gave it back to me. While he had it, he spilled a Coke on it and never washed it afterwards. Now it doesn’t show on the front, it does on the back and did not wash out. I originally tied the quilt at the block corners with buttons, but then started hand quilting in the ditch. He took it before I could complete the quilting. I own a longarm machine now and have been thinking of taking the quilt apart and replacing batting and backing. Should I?

Just curious- sometimes flannelette sheets are really nice & fluffy- do you check the sheets at the thrift shops. I always back my quilts with flannelette- nice 'n cozy- and less likely to slide off the crib or bed!

@@886077 lol I didn’t even know the name of it! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ I didn’t keep a tally of what I used, honestly, because I was just starting and used what I had. Plus I used a lot of random fabrics that weren’t from shirts that I had in my stash. I think it will really depend on how much fabric variation you want in each “slab”- there were blocks that only had a strip or two from a sleeve (which meant only using just a tiny bit of a shirt.) If you need a point of reference, a shirt usually has from just shy of a yard (for a S or M) to upwards of 1.3 yards (XL or XXL.)

Why can’t you go scrappy with those with wonderful prints and just go crazy with a scrappy mix? I go with prints over color..I find beautiful prints in men’s shirts❤But there are few colors I do not like..I’m very, very scrappy😂(KH)
