Our 3 month Siamese was starting to get really bitey and we thought it might have been teething or he was bored. But with increased play, a neuter, and getting him a 3 month old Ragdoll playmate (who grew up with littermates) a few weeks later, he’s almost an entirely different cat just after a week; so much less aggressive and even more affectionate.

Really good video - thank you. Our ragdoll Maestro is now 17 weeks old and is getting lots better. We are senior citizens, and debated a long time before getting him. Getting two is not an option for us, so we are his teachers. We love him dearly, but feel that we are his parents, he is not our boss, so stern but not mean discipline...in loudly saying no, walking away and diverting with his MANY and VARIED toys has helped. We will put him out of our bedroom at night if need be, and the next night he seems to have learned as he likes to sleep with us. We will try the hissing sound in addition. He seems to really want to please us and has a very loving nature, so that of course is very helpful. Thank you and keep the great videos coming. We still believe that discipline coupled with a lot of love is a good answer, just like we did with our now grown two daughters.

My kitty came to me as a stray, meowing for food in my garden. That was this past March. The doctor estimated he was about a year or a year and a half old. He must have had a good mom and good litter mates as he is incredibly gentle and has never broken skin either with teeth or nails. And no… he did not belong to someone else and got lost as he is missing the tip of his ear, meaning he was at some point trapped, neutered and released. I love him so very much ❤️❤️❤️ He has been showering me with affection since day 1, even though he is skittish with anyone that isn’t my mom or boyfriend 😅😅😅

I am having issues with my cat ginger . She used to be nice, but she has become aggressive. She bites my visitors and has even figured out how to open doors. She got aggressive when I was using my laptop and even bit me. If this behavior continues, I won't be able to keep her, and I really don't want to lose her. Her aggressive nature is unwelcome.

Thank you for the video! We adopted a cat a couple of weeks ago who has a bit of a habit of biting, so it’s perfect timing. Sounds like it’s play aggression as she mostly goes for the ankles. We play with her all the time, and she loves her toys, but I think she gets a bit confused about boundaries. She was born in the first lockdown, so she’s about 2 now, and the shelter thought she might have been taken away from her mum and litter mates too early, which would make sense with her behaviour. I do wonder about getting another cat to be a playmate for her but they had to isolate her in the shelter as she used to fight the other cats so I’m quite conflicted about that. I just want her to be a happy cat, it sounds like she’s had a rough time so far 😔

Thanks for sharing! Yeah the early part of a cat's development can really affect how they act in their adult years. I had a friend who had a cat who hated other cats, she recently brought another cat home and after maybe 3 weeks they are now great friends. Which I found remarkable.

My cats were very much raised with their litter - part of a litter of 8, who stayed with them and their mum until they were 14 weeks old, and then the pair came home together with me. They both used to give me love bites a lot more often when they were smaller, but they don’t nibble on me anywhere near as much now (sometimes they’ll bite by accident but then realise it’s me and give me a lick apology!), and though they both still groom me a lot, Nikita is much more of a human-groomer than Harvey! Harvey has recently been developing some play aggression towards me, and will run at and pounce attack my feet and legs, and it will often hurt and sometimes break the skin (so isn’t something I want him to keep doing!). It seems to happen when he gets over-stimulated by playing and chasing with Nikita (especially when she tells him she doesn’t want to play any more), and while she’s definitely the instigator of a lot of their fights and chases, she’s a lot smaller than him and he clearly takes it too far with her a bunch of times too - I’ve caught her hissing at him recently on a number of occasions, which was a new experience! He’s also been very unhappy that I won’t let him go and run up and down the hallway playing chase outside my flat lately - this used to be great fun on occasion while I was there with them, but a nightmare getting them both back in again - plus it’s been insanely hot in that corridor recently and I just don’t want to deal with it, and it affects them too - one of the last times they had their hallway frolicks they both ended up way overheated and panting, but having too much fun to want to go back home 🙀 I recently looked after my neighbours’ cats for 2 weeks while they were on holiday, which meant going in and out 2-3 times per day, and I just couldn’t deal with the stress and amount of time it took to get my cats back in again that many times a day, so I would wait until they were in a different room of my flat, close the door to that room, then pop across the hall. My cats did not approve! The overheating problem has been partially addressed, but in a way that makes the hallway even more dangerous for my kitties - the window at the end is on an automated system that opens it up to varying amounts, and while this used to happen only very occasionally to open it an inch or two, it’s now been “fixed” so it’s often open really wide, and since I live on the 4th floor (5th in American) I just can’t let them go out there anymore with any kind of regularity, unless I’m very much present, between them and the end window, and ready to get them back inside if the system decides to open it up with no warning 🙀 Harvey will sit at my flat door and meow loudly and sadly up at it, and will try and jump up to mess with the door handle and lock as if to try and open it… and they both also jump up and knock the door intercom off the hook and light up the camera and mic, I think because they’ve seen me lift the receiver, talk to a person, press a button, then a short time later open the door! I’ve got a clicker/target training device to a) give them more activities and things to occupy their minds and b) as a precursor to training them for harness and leash visits outside, which I’m hoping will help with them seemingly wanting to jump out my windows and demanding I give them access to the hallway, with its own death-window situation! I really want to go outside with them (I live next to a park, though one with a lot of dogs being walked), but I’m also nervous since there’s just one of me and two of them, which seems like an added level of difficulty (and I also watched your video about losing Arya with horror 🙀 and I’m so glad you tracked her down again 🧡). Nikita is also real wriggly - she had to wear a recovery suit for 2 weeks after her spay surgery (she developed complications - a seroma - due to not understanding the concept of “rest”… because she’s a kitten!), and oh boy was that a a mission! I had to get my neighbour to come over to assist getting her back into it one time, and when it came to remove it she fought me every step of the way there too. So I already know I need to get something as wriggle-proof as possible, but also not a thing where I have to put her head and paws through anything or she acts like I’m torturing her! So it has to be one you drape over them then fasten securely in a couple of places. Even just measuring them both accurately, past all the floof, and without them deciding the measuring tape is their sworn enemy, is a real tough task! So this goal of mine is progressing slowly… meanwhile I’ll try hissing when Harvey deploys his play aggression at me, walking away and presenting him with his kicker toy to grapple with instead - plus I need to do more vertical catification for them to explore their territory in a different way!
@TheCatButler2 жыл бұрын
Emma thanks for sharing your story! I hope you and your cats are living through the heat wave alright! As for outside I am also afraid of putting two of them on a leash at the same time. I know with my cats I don't believe its possible after Arya escaped. Your cats maybe more confident. But taking a few precautions would be good! I wish you the best :)

I think that I created my cat's biting behaviour. I made a lot of mistakes. He was about 5 when I adopted him, and my desire for him to be happy in my home caused me feed him a lot. I know - bad. Now if there isn't food in his dish, he finds and bites me. In my mind, the biting has always been related to his wanting more food. So now he is overweight. I can't seem to change my behavior. I worked with a feline behaviorist, but to no improvement. I need a step-by-step written out plan so that I can change MY behavior and then hopefully his. I love him so much, but don't like this behavior! Can someone help me do this?? Thank you!

I have a 6 month old kitten who was a stray, picked up by the shelter, stayed there about 5 weeks (was socialized with humans) before I got him. It took me 2 weeks to teach him not to scratch me, but he did not bite. A love bug. But the night before he was neutered, I waited until he finished eating and then took the dish away. That was the first time he bit me and broke skin. I usually play with him before he eats (sometimes he demands food NOW and I don't argue) but he is now wanting to bite hands, feet, even tried for my face once. In the evenings he falls asleep on me and is very loving. I have various toys for hunting and killing and he plays with them, eats and then bites me to draw blood. He is my fifth cat in 44 years and I have never had this problem. He and the border collie are coming to an agreement about proper behavior. I have a ranch so another mouth to feed will not work. Any suggestions, please.

From time to time she give my hand love bites and/or licks my hand. She is so very carefully that until now I got only one sratch by accident when I moved my hand to fast. We just came back from our first vaccinations with her in our camper. She dosen't showed any disliking at our trip, not staying in the camper, walking on a leash or even driving down. But how she acts from time to time reminds me very much as she had swollowed a dog. If someone passed the camper she growled like a massiv dog and when I took her for a walk and went a good way, my husband called her she ran to him at a full gallop; I had never seen such behavior from our previous cats. I have to teacher her the grooming, I think her first owner didn't made it. But it goes better and better specially after be nice and beautiful again she get a treat she only gets at this point and it's the one she likes most. Many greetings from Germany ❤️

People often use their hands, as you say to play, then wonder why that cute little kitten grows up biting and scratching. I’ve seen videos with vets and others that should know better using hands to play. My Ragdoll never bites or scratches. Whereas my Snowshoe sat in a cage waiting to be adopted and must’ve had people using their hands to play because he would bite when I first got him. He’s pretty much stopped biting, as I would discourage by using the same methods you’ve suggested here. Although the Snowshoe bites the Ragdoll and the Ragdoll cries out in pain. I think the Snowshoe is jealous of any attention my Ragdoll may get.

@TheCatButler2 жыл бұрын
Hey good question. You don’t want to reward the bite with a meal. Otherwise they think it’s what they need to do to get fed. I suggest when the cat bites, hiss and walk away. Do it consistently till your cat knows it’s not okay. And biting will not get them food. Reward your cat when he doesn’t bite. This will reinforce good behavior. Hope that helps!

Hello guys 👋🏻 I really would like to ask your help. I found a kitty one month and half old on the street(the mother died). I already brought her to the veterinarian and now she’s safe and healthy. The only 2 problems are that she’s eating only mousse (I add a bit of croquette) but if I want to give her only croquettes, she doesn’t eat it. Second point (and here I’m a bit scared for when she’ll become an adult cat), she bites, scratches and she walk sideways when she want to “attack”. Not strongly but still. Any advices?

Thank you so much for this. It 100% worked! My kitten was found in a car engine at four weeks old by a rescue organization so she had no mom and kittens to guide her. She’s a sweetheart but a huge biter. Grateful for your help. 🐈🩷

Our kitten bites everything... It bit a piece of my hair off, a few inches of nylon off a toy, and tries to go for cords! I'm busy trying to keep him from biting..
@TheCatButler2 жыл бұрын
Yeah kittens are very active biters. Get some cord protectors and toys that are a more durable. That should help a bit. And when they are adults the biting should go down. Hope that helps!

You’re not alone! My Maine Coon kittens are nearly 7 months old now (meaning I’ve had them for nearly 4… where did the time go?! 🙀), though with one now 8lbs and the other 12lbs people don’t believe me that they’re still kittens! They’ve both always been bitey in different ways, which has changed over time… even the first time I went to visit them, Harvey (my enormous ginger boy) was obsessed with chewing and nibbling and suckling on my friend’s finger, so I probably shouldn’t be surprised! 😹 He’s a fiend for chewing on furniture and hard things - table and chair legs, cabinet doors and drawer edges, bits of my (expensive 😬) desk chair, plastic crates… and I don’t know exactly which kitten it was, but one of them happily gnawed on my metal-framed glasses when I put them out of my bedroom one night when they were being demons - I found them in the morning with some tooth marks on the lens itself, and the plastic bits over the ends of the metal stems all pockmarked with holes and uncomfortably rough to the touch! (I always put my glasses away in the case when I take them off now, lesson learned…) I bought all of the dental chew toys by the brand Petstages that I could get my hands on, hoping to redirect some of this chewing behaviour… the mice in particular quickly became their favourite toys, but just to stalk and pounce and carry in their mouths and do general play with, instead of to chew! They were all soft though, intended for help with teething, but since he likes to chew hard things they weren’t doing the job. I ended up finding these green rubber lobster shrimpy toys online, marketed as “kitten toothbrushes” (and from watching the Cat Butler videos, they clearly are not!), and come with both a jingly bell and catnip envelope to put inside… but they also make brilliant puzzle-feeders, because you can stuff them with kibble, and the cats have great fun playing with the toy to get the kibble out! Only in the past month or so I’ve noticed them really properly chewing on them with any regularity though, but if your kitten seems to want to chew on harder things like my lunatic does, then I recommend them :) Cords are a real problem here too… I had a real dilemma a couple of days ago trying to install their new water fountain (the old one was terribly leaky and I’d had enough of dealing with it), because the cable it came with was longer than the old one, plus due to the design I couldn’t tuck the excess up under the fountain itself like I did before, so it was just out there. Even bundled up and wire tied down, both cats just wouldn’t leave it alone for more than a minute (though Nikita, my less enormous black tabby) was much more the culprit than Harvey. I ended up cobbling together a real hacky workaround with what I could immediately find to hand - a shoebox, where I cut a little hole in one corner enough to push the cable through, coiled it up inside the box, then out the top where there was already a little thumbhole/hole for airing the shoes/whatever! Then taped the lid closed… then I could finally walk away without having to keep my hand over the cable 😹 I have to hide every cable as much as possible - I’ve got charging cables near the sofa for my iPhone and iPad, and I have to coil them up, bury them under the seat cushions, then put another throw pillow on top, or they get destroyed. I once didn’t adequately protect my MacBook magsafe cable, and I found it with more of those little toothmarks in the connector end! I think I need to get a LOT more of that cable wrapping stuff, which is mostly used for things like desks where there’s a lot of cables going on, but when the problem is also the part between the cable coming out of the device and the wall, it’s a challenge! This is a very long and drawn out way of saying I feel your pain, though probably not as helpful as I would like!

Clearly you are a very conscientious, loving cat owner; however, everything I have read has cautioned against hissing at them as a form of communication. I am not a cat behaviorist or expert, but I imagine the idea is that they may become fearful of you and may not fully understand what you're communicating. From what I can surmise, redirecting to a toy, walking away, and showing that you're hurt, possibly even a soft "ouch or whimper" is what is recommended. Show them you're hurt and not an aggressive or intimidating force.
@skzion27 ай бұрын
I guess I reinforced bad behavior when I used to play fight with my cat. He'd pretend to go after my hands but barely contact them, as if I were faster than he. When I dramatically slowed down, he did as well. Yeah, it turns out I wasn't faster than he. Lol.

Rescued almost two months old cat, extremely playful, naughty and hyperactive, but with the passage of time he became aggressive in very strange manner. He wants to sit in the lap all the time or rubbing his head with my feet, constantly asking for petting with loud meowing. Yes, if I stop petting he starts meowing non stop and the moment he comes to me he starts purring louder and louder. The problem is without any posture change or warning suddenly he bites so hard on my hands feet or arms, that mostly starts bleeding with deep scars on my skin. No, he is not sick or injured, never got any punishment,has so many toys, no hissing, growling or warning he bites during cuddling and purring. But these aren't love bites. these are predator attacks. Don't know what to do? Can anybody help me plz?

I say be consistent in ignoring him and hissing at him. Continue to walk away. It takes a while for a cat to learn. It will let the cat know that this type of behavior is not rewarded

My little girl loves my stuffed animals and my fuzzy slippers so those are the things that I play with her with that she’s allowed to bite and claw do the little kangaroo kicks in alligator rules like she would do with her littermates so she’s in the mood to play like that that’s what we do cat toys or sometimes just a little bit too small to do something like that with but if you have a stuffed animal that you can actually hold in your hand see you like a pink flamingo or something and has long legs and fuzzy feathers in a long beak he had there’s lots of places that she can get in her bites and kangaroo kicks your hand safe and she can do a little bites
