I rescued a calico in June of 1999. She definitely had a tude, but I still loved that furry little beast. When she was 12 in 2011, I had my daughter, she loved my daughter and became her cat. I won't lie, I was a bit jealous!! Anyways my beautiful baby was spayed and strictly an indoor cat. I got to love her for 21.5 years. ❤

I understand. my wife and I have had rescues all our married life (and before). they've all been loving, friendly, huggable cats. our latest one? loves my wife - more or less (mostly less) and tolerates me. I can pet her but you can almost see her surreptitiously checking her tiny wristwatch and waiting to go.

Kelly, I too enjoyed close to 21 years with a feisty little girl, a feral-born tortoiseshell rescued from a colony. Born in 2001 and just passed away June 2022. Nothing gets deeper into your heart than a cherished pet who spends two decades with you.

I found a kitten in my yard, roughly four to five months. After a few weeks spent gaining her trust, she brought me four kittens that were at least six weeks old. And when I took her to the vet, she was already pregnant again with nine more babies. I adopted her and her first four, all happy and healthy a decade later.

That sounds about right. Most calicos and tortoise shell cats I've come across are very friendly and affectionate with PEOPLE but not with other animals. I think that's what Jackson is talking about. There's a calico in my mom's neighborhood that is a very sweet friendly cat but some neighbors have complained that she's attacked their pets like small dogs and other cats. Maybe they're quick to get angry and get very territorial.

My baby girl got an extreme case of pyometra when she was very young. She had to have her uterus and ovaries removed all in one piece. The vet said it was the worst case he'd seen in 20 years and was at a loss for words at my having managed to diagnose it at the time, just in time. If I had not acted when I did, forcing a friend to drive us to the Emergency Vet at 1am she would have been too far gone. We got in, confirmed my diagnosis, she was sedated and given antibiotics then due to the surgery not being open till 8am we brought her home to wait. [ She could have stayed at the vets till the surgery opened up but I understand her better than anyone else ever could and knew she was too gravely ill and doped up to be left unattened, in a cage, in a dark scary room, filled with animals she'd never seen, heard or smelt before, in a scary place, her dad not around. Better to be at home as calm and comfortable as possible where I could closely monitor her ] After the most tense and agonizing wait the surgery opened up and she went in... Success! The case was so extreme we photographed the extracted organ/s. The fallopian tubes, normally the thickness of a thin shoelace, were so swollen they were as thick as your thumb. When I got her I dedicated myself to raise her up to be a perfect specimen of health now all these years on, any time we go to a vet they're quick to remark how toned and muscly she is. I was in a deep dark place, well and truly at the end of my tether when I got her, the tiniest little 8 week old runt you've ever seen. That little life saved me I am thankful everyday to still have my beautiful baby girl by my side and will be forever grateful to all the dedicated people involved in her surgery and care. She brought me back from the abyss and I dedicated myself to raising her the best I can, no matter what. And now, well now I'm the proudest most thankful cat dad in the world.

We had a tortie named Tippy growing up out in the country, and she was definitely the boss of the house and she knew it too. But she also saved one of the other cats life- we had a blind cat, Helen, who was indoor only for obvious reasons, but she got out one day and disappeared. We thought she was a goner, but about a week after she had disappeared, we saw Tippy coming around the corner of the garage, closely followed by Helen. I'm convinced Tippy managed to find her and bring her back. How she did that I don't know, but there's no question to me that we'd have never seen Helen again without Tippy. Torties might have a 'tude, but they're smart as hell and I'll always love them

That is just like my Calico rescue who is also "agressive...ly friendly". All visitors belong to her, and she has to be part of every conversation, right after rolling over for "emergency pets". And humans had better give this great priestess of Bastet everything she wants, or else, she melts their hearts with an overload of cuteness. Humans constantly have to watch where they walk, or she could be under their feet. Of course, every human she meets falls in love with her because she makes sure they do. She is always in seduction mode.

Hey Jackson! another fun fact about ancient Egyptians, besides Bastet. they had another female cat goddess named Sekhmet, the goddess of war.
@lanieharmon1345
@lanieharmon1345 2 жыл бұрын
I think Sekhmet was a lioness, not just a domestic cat
@saintkohle
@saintkohle 2 жыл бұрын
While she was depicted as a lioness rather than a housecat, Sekhmet was very much considered the counterpart of Bastet. And in some areas she was even worshipped within the same context as Bastet since ancient Egyptians tended to treat similar gods as one and the same, allowing their region, cult, or ruling dynasty to dictate which 'version' of the god they held in regard. Also Sekhmet, while being known as a goddess of war, was also a promoter of healing and protection. Pretty much the poster child of the idiom "A double-edged sword"
@SL-gb8qd

As far as I know, Bastet and Sechnet are considered to be different sides of the same goddess. Just like the picture of a mother doing anything for her children, Bastet would become Sechmet to fight.

My first ever cat was a Tortie who was a tiny kitten who ran out from under a porch, sat on my foot and told me I was going to love her forever. Truth. Sadly she suffered from migraines and died of at stroke at seven. Two years later my wife and I were in a PetSmart just checking out the cats. We were standing speaking with the attendant and from back in a cage a Tortie we did not notice reached out and started tapping me on the shoulder. I turned around and she clearly said, "You're mine buddy." That was in 2016 and her name is Freya and a more apt name would not be possible.

Can you please tell me how she was diagnosed with migraines ? I’m seriously interested. Pets can’t tell us they have pain, which is sad. Of course we notice when they’re not acting normal. It crossed my mind years ago that my cat might be cranky sometimes because “she has a headache or something “ that she couldn’t explain. I just knew that. But sounds like your kitty had it regularly. How did the Vet know ? Was she given headache medication ? If it exists for cats. Thanks ❤

I call my unspayed cat my queen because she is a queen haha! She cannot be spayed because of a severe heart condition. Cardiologists say she cannot survive a surgery. (Weve had multiple opinions) She’s an indoor only baby and on meds and stuff, she’s all good for now, don’t worry. We are enjoying the short time we have with her because her heart condition will shorten her life. When she starts to have symptoms and starts suffering we will put her down. @benw9949
@benw9949 2 жыл бұрын
Male calico or tortoiseshell cats are very rare and due to unusual genetic or chromosome abnormalities, from anything I've ever read. XXY or something odd going on with an XY. Calico and tortie are sex-linked, meaning black or brown on one X, red (orange, ginger) on the other X, and only one or the other X gets turned on at a time in a group of cells during development of the kitten. So that gives the marbling of the orange and black/brown. (Red is recessive, it needs two copies to show up, or one if for a male, located on the X chromosome, if I recall right.) -- So yes, male calicos and torties do happen, they are possible, there's probably more than one way for them to happen. I'm not an expert, not a vet or geneticist, that's from reading and from videos from cat folks like Jackson and Kitten Lady and others. You should be able to find out more from your local vet or looking it up on your own. But the takeaway is, you got a good cat out of it, and not to worry about the genetic oddity. They happen enough to be a known thing. They're good cats like any other. :)

I've had four male cats in my life, the last of whom died last year. We just adopted our first female cat a couple of months ago. She's 10 months old and she's a calico! So this was very interesting, thank you! She's so weird! She isn't attracted to cardboard boxes or paper bags or crinkly things! She snuggles in bed with us, but she loves to sleep in the crate we brought her home in (with a nice soft blankie). And if she can get away with it, she'll eat anything: bread, peas, dog food, onion (I got it away from her before she could swallow). We named her Cleo, part of "Cleopatra", Because only one eye of her Egyptian eyeliner is applied.

This video reminded me of my grandpas calico, pinky. She was the queen of the household and knew it, at first I didn’t really like her because she was a bit aggressive. When she was rescued by my grandpa she was very skinny, in fact, my grandpa named her pinky because of how small she was. She clearly had been through a lot so it was slow to gain her trust but once I did she was the sweetest cat ever. I’ve moved out of my grandpas house and I miss her a lot, gaining her trust was such a rewarding experience, shes never crawled on anyone’s lap except mine and it feels really special that she trusted me enough to.

I had a female cat that apparently took color requests for kittens. I would joke around every time she came in the house we want all orange kittens and one white one for my mom as I would pet her and giver her a lot of attention. She was a black cat and after she had that batch it was 6 orange kittens and one white one. We were in tears because we weren’t expecting that to actually happen.

😮 This happened to me too! When the neighbours tabby was pregnant, I asked her as I pet her growing belly "If you give birth to a little orange boy, I'll take him 🧡" and what do you know, when she gives birth there's 2 black/orange spotted one, one copy/paste of the mom just long haired... And a little orange boy 😂

Having a queen around is insanity!!! My mom adopted a cat right before lockdown and she wasn't spayed. She kept getting pregnant and her appointments kept being canceled because of lockdown, it was awful! She's a total escape artist too so she had 4 litters before we finally got her spayed. I have a big brother from the first litter and a little sister from the last litter. Her kittens are wonderful though, extremely snuggly, all of them! There was always at least one with a crooked tail too! My boy has a lightning bolt, his was definitely the most crooked, so I named him Harry after Harry Potter's scar. He met the youngest litter and was just enchanted with them, people told me male cats aren't nurturing but I know my boy so I slowly introduced them to him, he was cleaning their ears and cuddling them in under an hour! He really would have made an incredible dad but his darn mother had already popped out 17 before we finally got her in for surgery! By some miracle, we knew people who were in need of a cat or two or three and it's been really sweet to get updates on them all because their families just adore them. My ex's family even has two who were raised by my boy! Cat family dynamics are fascinating, the only boy from the final litter copied everything Harry did and looked up to him a lot. It was sad to separate them today when I went to collect him. My mom kept one of the girls from the final litter because she's timid and very attached to her mother. And I ended up with a girl from the final litter because she was just determined to make me fall in love with her. She is the sweetest most affectionate cat I've ever met, and she looks like a more cool-toned version of my boy so I could not resist her. Big brother and little sister are buddies but they do compete for my attention as cats will do ... and I think she's also coming to the realization that he's always going to treat her like a kitten, even though she's nearly a year old now, and that annoys her a bit! Big brother will always clean her ears and fuss over her which is fun for me to watch the cuteness. Obviously, it's really bad that my mom's cat was able to have so many kittens and we would never do that on purpose, but the pandemic really messed things up, it's truly so lucky we were able to find enough responsible families for all of them. It's been such a once-in-a-lifetime thing to watch them all grow and see how similar their personalities are and observe the family quirks they all have, like how they all drool when they get really into snuggling! I also feel really lucky to have a beautiful pair of biological siblings and to see their precious sibling dynamic, it really is so similar to human siblings which is hilarious. Most importantly ALL 17 ARE NOW SPAYED AND NEUTERED!

(Rescue group spayed her.) Now she is a very senior kitty. When I cat sit her she will bawl me out and order me to bed if I stay up too late.(I stay at my friend's house when I cat sit.) Jackson, love your posts! I adopted a mom from a local community foster, along with the kitten most dependent on her. The little one has seizures (controlled on meds). She is the absolute bestest of kitties. She was found pregnant and abandoned in an apartment complex. The maintenance man took her when he saw it was winter and she was pregnant, but needed a foster. My friend got her emergently with the kittens. I never thought of adopting her until the foster suggested it. She hears my alarm in the AM and immediately comes to jump in bed with me for snuggles (not a second before). She runs to the door when I get home. She HAS to be in my lap if I'm on my phone. Everyone who comes to the house is CLEARLY here to see her. She is the sweetest, and also the bestest of mousers. She is the boss of the house, but so attentive and calming when the little one has a seizure. She makes sure he's safe and OK (we found a good med regimen for him so he's doing awesome now). I would strongly encourage everyone out there, when you see a litter to adopt, always ask about the mom. They are usually amazing cats . Take a kitten along with the mom. When he was little, she kept him in line. I'd never had a pet before and she was the one who made it seamless. Now mine play together, snuggle, and keep each other company. I'm so grateful her foster made me take a look at the mom. She's my best girl.

My brother has two female kitties that he inherited when his live-in girlfriend died in a car accident not too long ago. Because of me, her and an old roommate of his, he's used to living with cats, but has never before been the soul caretaker cat dad that he is now (I expanded on this part of the story and added it at the end of the comment, for those who might be interested). The older of the two - call her Lady - Lady's about 15 years old or so and was sterilized when she was 8 or 9 months or so. The other one - call her Blinky - Blinky's around 6 years old now I believe, she may even be up to 7 or 8 years old at this point (none of us are 100% sure how old either of them are, but we have an estimate at least). For reasons unbeknownst to us, Blinky was never sterilized. Thankfully she's never had any kittens and seems so used to being indoors that she's not even once shown any interest what so ever to go outside (no worries - my brother's still keeping an eye out making sure she doesn't make a run for it when she's in heat). It's very obvious being in heat takes a great toll on poor Blinky - she hardly sleeps and after each heat she's so out of it she's more or less a completely different little lady. This along with all the other, usual, reasons why it's preferrable to sterilize, lead us to contact the vet to talk about doing something about it. I.e. having Blinky sterilized. The vet - to my jaw-dropping surprise - told us they didn't do that on cat's who were more than two or at the absolute max three years old because the chance was the behavior would persist regardless after that. Personally, I find that very hard to believe. Sure, I can go as far as imagine a possibility some of the behavior could remain, but seeing how the procedure we're talking about means removing the uterus and the oviducts, I have a hard time imagining what would set of the behavior when there are no sex hormones produced. And besides the behavioral side of a fur-dame in heat, there are so many other benefits to sterilization. My questions are: Am I wrong? Have any of you out there experienced something like this - and by "this" I mean both being denied or dissuaded from sterilizing your cat because of the cat's age, and/or have experience of a sterilized female maintaining her heat behavior, and if so: were there any difference before and after the operation regarding intensity, frequency, duration etc.? _For those interested: This is the part I cut out above in order to "get to the point". I don't know if it's of any interest to anyone if I'm being honest, but I still felt the need to share not only the tragic part of the story about how my brother became the dad of two lovely - and *very* individual - little ladies, without also sharing the good parts of the story. So here it is (it may be formulated somewhat oddly, but that's because, as I said, I just cut it out and inserted it here instead - hopefully it will make sense either way.) Originally it the plan was for me to take the ladies in - my brother's co-hab. gf had said on several occasions that *if* for some reason she wouldn't be able to care for them, she wanted me to be their guardian (none of us could of course know what the future would hold, but there were other circumstances that could result in her not being able to take care of them - work stuff and potentially moving abroad etc.). But when the time came as it did, I just couldn't do it. I love each and every one of those eight little paws, and would love the honor of being their servant, their buddy, and their personal guard. That wasn't - and will never be - the issue. There were something much more important: My brother might not have known it at the time, but I did: loosing the woman he'd been with for almost a decade and lived with for the past 3 - 4 years is hard enough, and while I did my very best to help him through that first year - just simple things like making sure he went to the funeral, and that he had clean clothes - even everyday stuff like paying the bills, opening the mail, eating and getting in and out of bed ... We don't have a big family, or lots of close friends - We have each other - sure we have friends, but when it comes to him: not friends for situations like this. I was really afraid for my beloved brother, and seeing the hurt in him .... The thought of him going from waking up in the morning to a home with her and the two fur-dames, to waking up the next day to an empty house - I knew he needed the ladies much more than I did; I knew he needed them more than anything, and I knew they too needed him. In all the sadness that was, and still is, I find comfort in knowing my dearest, most beloved brother gets to wake up every morning surrounded by two soft, warm, purring little ladies who immediately starts their individual morning routines, dragging him out of bed, telling him all about what's been going on during the night, what they're planning for the day ahead, and giving him all that warmth and love that he need so much of (and I'm not left dry either: Few things brings me as much joy and a feeling of warmth filling my stomach as waking up and finding a message on my phone with a pic of the three of them snuggling up in bed, and a short message telling me all about their antics

I have rescued cats for ~20 years, including a lot of TNR. Some of the 'TNR' candidates (a good many) end up as TNA as they were abandoned and not truly feral. While I can't be certain of the age, I can think of several 'older' females that I had spayed who showed no problems afterwards. But, let's consider options. Even if your cat does maintain this behavior after she is spayed. It would still be better for her in the long run to have the surgery. Minimizes chance of mammary tumors. Eliminates ovarian cancer. Eliminates the chance of her slipping out (or an unaltered male cat getting in - yes, they will) and getting pregnant. All of that outweighs the small risk involved with this std surgery. There is no reason not to do it. I would be shopping for a new vet, one with a more carrying attitude towards felines.

Most of my cats have been girls, and I like to joke as a kid I had my cat mom Duchess and my human mom cause my cat was the one I always went to with all my troubles as a kid to vent to and pet her. She was probably the friendliest and most social cat I ever had but also toughest most no-nonsense cat I've ever met around other animals. She loved human strangers and attention even though she was a tortoise tabby mutt, and she cat fought with everything got all her teeth knocked out over the years but one and still insisted on dry food and survived a pretty bad injury but she still lived 18 years as an outdoor cat. (And all this was after appearently leaving her first families home across town to come back to her old familiar territory. ) And she also made fast friends with my rabbit (after their initial meeting being a hiccup neither got hurt but they both false swiped eachother) and after that she guarded him too and literally fought small dogs off for him and waited for him to pass before she decided she was good to. She was a really great cat and I loved her a lot. If I were to base it on her, I'd be really surprised "tortitude" was even a thing, but I had a cat in middle school that embodied that and my siamutt boy who passed recently had a very similar cranky attitude

My mom was always adamant about having boy cats, because she believed boys were friendlier, and...I mean, my girls are a bit off put by being held, sure. they were caught near the end of the infamous 'socialization window' and then went through a lot of stressful vet visits and such when they were finally caught (especially the smaller one - she was adopted by someone then returned a few weeks later, so she's even more upset by being held than her sister is because she's had less consistency in her life) so they're much more hands off than a cat that was socialized from a younger age. But they are just as loving, just in their own ways.

Here are a few KZbin Algopoints: So, I have two rescues - both of them were kittens on the street, both were injured. One had just had a litter of kittens and she was a kitten herself at the time. Anyway, the older one, Jikji, is about 7 now, and Autumn, is almost 2. Jikji is a Korean short hair with just four domino spots on the poles, and Autumn is a calico. It's been about 10 months now that they've been together, and they are finally tolerating each other in the same area - same room a few feet apart - without any fighting. It's been a long, rough battle, but I used a lot of your techniques in having them get along. Same feeding times, grooming times one right after the other, giving each of them their own safe place in each room... it's all working! Thank you so much!

We've adopted a number of cats over the last 22 years or so (5 since 2003), and I've come to find that in our family, male cats have been much more friendly overall. My favorite cat breed has been the tabby. (but we love black cats as well). Female cats tend to be a lot more aloof, but seem to mellow with age. Our female cats have their moments, preferring to be special in the evening at bed time. Our Male cats tend to be social all day but especially at night. Not sure if this is just behaviours that we've instilled into them, or not. We've never had a problem with them scratching furniture because we provide them with scratch gear. We've NEVER had a cat declawed (just... Don't...) We've always adopted our cats from the SPCA and always always always had our cats fixed.

I just adopted a beautiful diluted calico cat! She is absolutely beautiful, affectionate, playful, and so curious! I’m so surprised she wasn’t adopted sooner - it’s like she was waiting for us all along! She chirps and it’s her way of telling me to go follow her, and she wants me to pet her as she eats 😂 I’ve learned so much these past few days!

You can get along really well with a female cat when you inevitably accept that the pecking order is... what it is, lol. My beautiful tortie girl ruled with an iron paw and it was great to see her confidence, knowing how damaged it had been when she first arrived from the shelter.

Hi Jackson! I came across one of your videos while searching for cat related content. Instantly subscribed! My wife and I always loved your show and never missed an episode. We were recently "chosen" by a stray female, a Russian Blue mix with the sweetest personality I've ever come across in cats. Took her to the vet last week for her first exam, vaccinations, and to check on having her speyed. She's an indoor kitty now, only going outside with us as weather permits: we're in a rural area with multiple predatory animals around.

My fur baby is 15 years old with early stage kidney disease and now has a bladder infection. I took my vet's advice and also watched every video. Your video of using oil was truly faster, easier and less traumatizing! I used organic avocado oil and quickly touched her nose then quickly but gently blew in her nose which caused her to swallow instead of chewing on the pill. I can't thank you enough for your video, Thank you!

Definitely fits my calico rescue cat's personality, but she's the sweetest little soul, and it makes the gradually increasing moments of wanting to be near me or asking for a fuss all the more rewarding. Think about how long you’d leave a dog at home on its own (in terms of mental stress, not letting him out to pee etc.) cats are the same! I would go any longer than 5-6 hours.

Hmmm, well, i love my 3 cats but once a year when I am going on the vacation, I leave them up to 2 weeks with constant checks from my friend. Mentally I am sure it is not easy for them, but we restore that with a lot of cuddling when I am home. I buy Feliway hormons to keep them calm. I have surveilance, and speak to them :). thanks God never had any issue. As their majesty gets programmed air conditioning and a lot of stuff :)

@@ivicatic You're doing fine if you've got someone visiting them daily. As long as basic needs (food, water, clean litterbox) are met, cats can get along all right as long as you might be at work. But I think it's easier on them if they're not only cats. Cats aren't as solitary as we've been led to believe historically.

Loved this video! So informative... yep I have had 3 sorties so far... and you just confirmed what I kept saying... there are special traits more common... particularly their sensitivity (yep they can get their feelings hurt) their gentleness (when raised with love and patience), their loyalty (they seem to imprint) they tend to stay close to us... in the room... they adopt us... they have certain routines around one individual. , their maternal instinct (even for human babies), their need to interact (meow, play) when they are young especially... and if encouraged... man they really strive. It's true of many other cats I'm sure... but it's always been true of my 3 and when I check with others they tell me the same.

I've been rescuing cats since I was a really small kid, like, not in shelters, but in harsh conditions out in the streets and in the wild. Saving them from mean kids that would abuse the poor things to them pretty much on their final days from dehydration and hunger, and I'll tell you, the strongest bonds I've ever had were with the cats I've rescued. Dogs we adopted were great and all, but when I was in any trouble as a kid, like one of my neighbor's bulldogs biting me and latching to my leg, the one that ran it off was my cat I saved, her name was Smoky, a Siamese mix cat, and I'll never forget her for literally going ballistic on the dog to help me. Lots of folks say Siamese cats have as much attitude as Torties, but really I think it's more of they just like who they like.

Personality doesn't seem to be related to fur color or pattern or length, so far as I've noticed. Some people will make claims about tuxes or Siamese or tabbies, but basically, they're all cats. Hahah. Definitely nothing unlucky about black cats, that's superstition is all. Enjoy 'em both. Every single cat I've ever had has been a different personality, some more so than others, haha. Only a uple who were too spicy for their own good. Enjoy your two and have lots of good times.

Was literally just thinking the same. I had no idea “tortitude” was a thing until I watched this video - lo and behold, there’s a whole community behind it. All that said, I couldn’t be happier with my tortie. She’s incredibly agreeable and not at all what seemingly most would consider “the standard” among tortoiseshells. Of course, however, everyone’s mileage will vary. There’s always going to be that outlier. But, I think, it DOES spark an interesting conversation regarding the overall perception of this specific type of cat’s behavior.
