As we end our exploration of the virtues, we learn about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts perfect our virtues and increase our ability to respond to God’s guidance and inspiration. The fruits of the Holy Spirit perfect us, are signs of a life lived in the Spirit, and are “the first fruits of eternal glory,” as the Catechism tells us. Our cooperation with the Holy Spirit sustains and perfects our moral life, enabling us to live a more full and joyful life. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 1830-1845.

Love the analogy of an orange tree to explain the fruits and also the method of measuring our virtues by comparing the intensity of them as the time passes by. If we could only understand the Eucharist! If we could only understand this precious and sacred gift! It’s a gift we will never be able to fathom or comprehend. It’s the gift of His complete self-giving and sacrificial love. The Eucharist is God Himself, present in our world, and given to us to transform us into that which we consume. On Holy Thursday, we hear the Lord say for the first time, “This is my body that is for you." We hear Him point to the gift of the Holy Eucharist as His gift to us, given for our holiness and fulfillment. The Eucharist is God Himself, present in our world, and given to us to transform us into that which we consume. As we consume the Holy Eucharist, we are drawn into the divine life of the Most Holy Trinity. We are made one with God and are given the food of eternity. The Eucharist transforms us into true servants You will see the fruits of this indwelling in your daily life and you will be at peace. And from these gifts, and from the indwelling of the Trinity, you would have courage in the face of hardship, strength to cast out fear and an impenetrable defense against the evil one, against his lies and his snares. What would you experience if God were to fully dwell in the depths of your soul? Peace, joy and amazement! If you do not see God at work in your life in this way, invite Him to enter. This is not a one time invitation; rather, it must become your daily habit and sincere desire. Lord, Your presence in my life is the greatest Mercy I could ever receive. There is nothing greater than You living in me. ❤For the intentions of CIY and all of our brothers and sisters, worldwide, through Christ our Lord. Amen. ❤

There are those who say they can judge the Church by its fruits pertaining to the years of sex scandal in the Church. It is one thing to judge wisely by the fruit but it's another thing to understand the fruit. Every tree is meant to bring forth good fruit and so they do but what is done with the fruit matters. Too often nothing is done with the fruit and the fruit rottens and is no longer viable for consumption so let it be among the dung to fertilize the tree. One does not cut the tree down because its fruit has gone rotten but one does look to a new season. So we must be patient with the Church and learn to consume its fruit before it rottens. Complacency must not be found in the Church and God forbid it ever be confused with patience. Complacency is to choose not to do right in due season whereas patience is to endure the hard difficult times and wait on the Lord as He waits on us. Apostasy is never the answer. How can you glean good tasting fruit of which you're accustom to from the briers? What will sustain you in your spiritual wilderness? Be patient and wait for a new crop of fruit. Stay with the Church. Be blessed, Live blessed; bless others.

I once managed to see the screen that the doctor had written as she reached across the room to a draw to get me a leaflet about something. The screen had the words "Patient is docile" written on it. Dad used to tell me that I am slow and take along time to work things out. Teachers put on school reports. "Tries hard but can't get there" When I broke my ankle in Somerset on a holiday they had it on my records. "Patient is mildly retarded". I feel fine.

RJ, it may be helpful to remind that Catholics agree with the many scientific aspects of naturalism that describe the physical world, so Catholics would agree with random mutation and natural selection when scientifically defined as physical processes. Of course where we understand naturalism errs is in hypothesizing that nature must be entirely physical (rejecting spiritual), which infers that the sole cause must be physical processes. Would you agree that naturalism assertions of sole causes are also unfalsifiable? We see clear weaknesses in naturalism in addressing metaphysics, such as the first cause (how nature created energy/matter out of nothing), and self-evident human experiences such as our purpose, free will and morals. Theism provides a much more credible basis for reasoning in these areas than naturalism. (BTW, let me know if you'd like to continue our prior discussion comparing your concept of "embedded morality" based on an evolved survival instinct to the theist concept of morality based on a "spiritual soul".)

My guess is because the article topic is "The Virtues", so that is the focus of the nuggets. The virtue topic includes the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit as the source/sustain the virtues. Using Fr. Mike's analogy, this topic of virtues is focused on what is needed for healthy growth of the plant. The quality of fruit produced is a secondary indicator, and actually may not be evident depending on the season. The Fruits of the Holy Spirit may also have been mentioned in the article to help distinguish them from the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
