This is a heavy topic for me, especially as someone with mental disorders and how it impacts discussions of scrupulosity, culpability, and mortal sin. It is can also be immensely challenging to find a good confessor and spiritual director who can assist. If there are others out there like myself, even if it hurts, know you are never alone! God bless.

I'm going through some issues myself it's tough to live in the world and not of the world , there is alot of distractions from everywhere , I find my friends who don't live a Christian life a bit tough to Handel mentally they just don't understand what I'm going through as far as trying to live a Christian life.....that's why we need Christian friends of good character, most of my mental hardships are of still trying to be accepted as the old me , I'm afraid of being shunned ,

I am inclined to scrupulosty. I once agonized over a sin and was really anxious about going to confession. In the confessional I blurted it out, and the priest said, "Okay, that's your mental hangup, but do you have any sins to confess?"

Personally, I think it was the aspect of seeing God as a judge instead of Father is what leads me to be scrupulous with sin. Being in fear of Him, instead of understanding that He loves me no matter what; and that I should love him as a great Father should be loved by his child. Thank you for this insight! God bless all of you!

That hits the nail on the head. I think it's a more difficult concept to grasp for those who've never had much of father figure in their lives, especially during their formative years. A lot of parents really drop the ball and, thus, make it infinitely more difficult for their children to approach God with a clear understanding of His merciful love. I guess that's where devout Christians like us are called to step in and shepherd the weak through the valley of darkness.

True story, funny. I was walking into church for a weekday event and saw a sign on door which, I thought, said, "Guilt Club". I had a little chuckle, and then thought of a guilt-ridden Catholic friend whom I thought might benefit from this class. Soon afterward, I met with her and shared the good news. She thought great! But then, she asked further...when did I see that sign? Where? "Oh no," she said. "That wasn't a "guilt" class, that was my "Quilting Class" I have at the church every week!" 😮

On Forgiveness: (from my personal notebook.) A friend had asked, “Why should I forgive? What’s in it for me anyway? What difference does it make?” I have been praying, meditating, and contemplating ‘forgiveness’ for several months. Here is my response: Forgiveness is a gift for the one who has been harmed. How? Because holding onto grudges, anger, resentment, bitterness, and pain is inherently self-destructive. Why self-destructive? One might believe that holding onto these negative feelings gives protection, keeps one from being harmed again… when in fact all it does is poison the soul. Forgiveness is a gift for the one who has been harmed. Again, how? In taking the steps to actively forgive the one who caused injury, all of that festering poison can be released… separated from the spirit, and be left behind. This leaves room in the heart, mind, and spirit of the injured to heal emotionally and spiritually. Forgiveness is a gift for the one who has been harmed. And, should it end up benefitting the one who caused the harm… that’s just a bonus. I’ve heard the phrase ‘forgive and forget’ however that is foolish. Forgive, yet remember… no need to let the same snake strike you twice. But don’t let fear and anger become the base upon which you rest your spirit. Forgive… and if you find you still carry pain, forgive again. And again, repeatedly… until you have found peace. Many of us hold on to our grudges like a toddler with a favorite blanket… we won’t let go because it’s safe… familiar…. And by the time we let go it’s in shreds… barely recognizable. Don’t carry resentments until you have shredded your spirit. Lay your pains, resentments, angers, and fears at the foot of the altar of God… and forgive. You will find blessings beyond measure, because, forgiveness is a gift.

there are no incurable diseases, God can cure the believer from anything that has come against our bodies, walk in complete faith that He has healed you, ask Him to reveal to you where this attack originated, it can be from a generational curse or something you brought into your life through by the lies of the enemy, unfortunately the Catholic Church has failed in these teachings on spiritual warfare and the attacks of the enemy and how we can come against them. Get in His Word everyday, pray and ask Him to give you the eyes to see and ears to hear what it is He wants to reveal to you. He has given us all of the answers we need in His Word.

My humble suggestion regarding scrupulousity is that a well-informed conscience will stand tall in the face of scrupulousity. . When a conscience is wishy-washy formed, that conscience is bound to suffer scrupulousity often. And this is spiritually dangerous. Underr formed conscience is like a half-baked dough. A sound conscience is the conscience that misses prayer hour yet understands that this can occur as often as life goes, yet stay strong and fast in the faith/prayer. I think using one's strong judgment to decide how good or bad something is, without fear or intimidation, drives away scrupulousity. Again, intention matters a lot, too. So my take on how to curb scrupulousity is having a very strong judgment on ones decisions and actions on one's daily living. And it takes a very strong faith. Peace and blessings.

Another Irish Catholic here, one of 12 children who said the family Rosary every night on our knees in the living room. We went to Catholic grammar school, watched Bishop Sheen on Tuesday nights and went to Novena's every week. I am very thankful for my Catholic upbringing as it brought me to where I am today. I haven't been to Mass in years and when I hear that it is a mortal sin not to attend Mass and you will go to hell if you die with that on your soul it makes me sad. When I was a kid all I had was a fear of God and no experience of a loving God and wished I was a Protestant who didn't have this heavy burden to carry. As an adult I had a mystical experience which was a Grace from God where, simply said, God showed me as a reflection of Him and how beautiful I was because He lives in me and we are one. Not only with each other but with every living person and thing in this world. What a gift. Any good thing that has happened to me I had nothing to do with, God does it all in me and through me. I now try to live God's will for me and not my puny will because I know that no matter the circumstances it's all for my healing. We are so loved by our Creator and all I want to do is love. Not an easy thing living in this world we reside in but with God all things are possible. I believe in miracles.......all is well......all will be well. Love and prayers to all.

thank you so much for this topic. There are things that I have struggled with most of my life where I avoided confession and if I went to confession, I would only party confess. During Lent this year, largely because of some of your conversations and realizing how poorly catharized I was, for all that I have learned the past few years, I did a life confession. I can honestly say that it was one of the most liberating experiences I have ever had. I know that God is working in my life through many resources, especially Jesus' mamma, She shows up in a lot of my art work as does the Eucharist & the Holy Spirit. Praying for you and the ministry that you provide. God bless.

I need to understand something, when we pray the rosary, and at Mass, we pray for the Pope’s intentions. What if we don’t support the pope’s intentions? What if we don’t agree with some of the Pope’s intentions? Are we praying for things we don’t want, agree with or support? Are we giving our power of prayer to intentions that may be wrong or to things that are non-Catholic traditional teaching?? I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you

I believe that is a good thing that we have learned how to feel guilt and know what true guilt is. If you don’t know guilt you will never know what it feels like to be forgiven and why forgiveness is a blessed gift. Guilt is learned it is not innate. We are born with the guilt of sin this is not easy for for everyone to understand.

I am afraid to talk to most priests because they do seem to judge. Nuns and priests never explained why or how we should be other than to because the church says so. You do not ask questions you just do. Why wouldn’t one feel guilt? Father Rich if I could go to a priest like you I would. Listening to the three of you makes me want to go to confession. I would actually make a distinction between guilt and shame: guilt: regret over a sin you did shame: believing your an utter failure When I think of shame I do think hiding someone hiding their face and afraid of rejection - like Adam hiding in the garden not wanting to be seen because he feels like a failure. Guilt - while it's a heavy feeling - it nevertheless allows you to feel loved and therefore moves you towards reconciliation. Shame is a symptom of a scrupulous person, while regret is a tool for anyone for returning to God. Shame is when guilt goes on overdrive.

Ryan D, your comments about finding your wounds, and praying for the people you felt hurt you, was profound to me. I thought I had forgiven my Mom. And the idea of not trusting in God's divine mercy gave me much to think about. I think that the teaching of a judgemental God as a child brings feelings of "Catholic guilt " as even as an adult. It took me until I was 14 to realize a loving God (found this on a teenage treat), but even then , the teachings that God was judgemental (as His biggest attribute) made it difficult to feel he was loving. I think this was during the early 60's. Was the Cathecism different at that time? I have realized as an adult that my mother was probably taught this as a child, and believed that to be true. I have discussed this with many Catholic women the same age as I, it was the same for all of us. Several women had left the Church. I believe that is where the term "Catholic guilt" comes from, not being aware of God's mercy. An era of not learning that Jesus was also a forgiving, loving God. I know that this was not everyone ' experience. I love my Mom, I believe she did the best she could with what she knew, but I am going to pray for 30 days...since I guess I am still talking about it! I am curious if any women with parents from the late 30's have had that same experience ?? I now know that Jesus LOVES me, He forgives me, and I trust in Him! ❤

You all are very knowledgeable. The point I want to make, God gave us a Free Will, we're not infallible, and what is important is the spiritual growth we obtain when we repent and realize our mistakes, and do our best not to repeat the sins of the flesh, the spirit, the mind, etc. God is all knowing and all seeing, he created every living thing. It's about how we pull ourselves out and dust ourselves off and recognize the 'error in the act'.

@@_TradCat_ I love tradition, and wouldn’t say that I have ever met somebody that is “too traditional.” Things such as veiling and taking communion the traditional way, as well as the Latin Mass, all remind us as to how sacred the Mass is. I grew up going to regular mass and people were sweat pants to my church, and I didn’t care about Catholicism or believe in the real presence. My son wont grow up that way, we will keep tradition. I can’t take communion on the tongue because of a rape, that was my point, I feel guilty that I am not able to receive Him in what I believe is the most appropriate way.

He woke up with bruises all over him. My sister has been married twice and they both had heart attacks. First one past away and her second one is in a coma from a heart attack. My husband had a mini stroke . Panic attack. He doesn't know. I lost my last two children. I feel like there is a demonic or cures. Im lost and wanna break free. I see a heavyness over my father. Hes 80 now. I feel like im gonna lose him to satan. I feel like it destroyed my family. Little by little.

Although the expression itself is an oxymoron, the idea behind Catholic guilt is a good thing for the individual and society if it stops you doing the wrong thing.

Saya tidak judes, saya miskin, saya di Bali suka menolong orang, meskipun saya miskin, saya murah senyum suka membagi kasih terhadap orang lain. Saya tidak memiliki wajah Judes.

here's a few truths. we have all sinned before God, and so sin is real, guilt is real, and can't be denied. but also, the devil likes to exaggerate guilt. Only God can perfectly judge us, but that doesn't mean we can't judge at all.

I don't know if you go back and look at these comments, but something you didn't discuss was this. You pushed a pile of "snow" down the mountain, and that was wrong. You confessed the sin of pushing the snow, and were truly sorry. But on the way down that snowball got bigger and bigger. It knocked down people and injured them. Then it could have become an avalanche and been very destructive and even killed people. Is it scrupulosity to think about the consequences of your sin, and not just the sin itself which you are sorry and forgiven by our Lord? Do you understand what I am seeing. It is hard to totally let go of the consequences, even after you have repented.

No, protestants are Christians that look to the bible to deal w/ our sins. We know that we sin. We don't look to sin because of eternal forgiveness, but we are grateful that it exists, through Jesus. My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1

Catholics are full of guilt. Gee, I wonder how that happened! Maybe teaching little children what adults were taught in Jesus' time.

This will always be a difficult action/sin performed by religious leaders to forgive . We should never forget those who failed our children. So many people/ children have been hurt by this behavior. Darkness is a part of our scripture as is the light. I hope we will stay strong, follow the love and the light of God.
