How different would Christmas be if we actually treated Advent as it should be treated and celebrated the Christmas season in those couple of weeks after Christmas? We always fight for the meaning of Christmas, but we should be fighting for the meaning of Advent, too. ;-)

There’s a show on Netflix, a documentary, called The Star of Bethlehem. You have got to watch it. A lawyer, with the use of astronomy computer software, the same that NASA uses, explains the Star and the date Jesus was born. I’d love to hear your take on the show.

You refresh my memory I forgot the Saint Francis was involved with the nativity scene or started it. Thank you for that information. But I would like to add on not to be personal that is my favorite saint of all time. Number one because of animals especially birds. And number two in Islam he made peace during the crusades and there’s a famous portrait of him in the sultan Hugging each other almost like with a circle and a fire I believe with blue paint. He is almost like the closest thing we have to a Muslim saint. The Friars of the Franciscans are very very special people and they respect between them and Islam is different in that community. If I said it correctly. Peace be with you that is the moral because Francis Saint Francis made peace during a war.

Total tangent to Christmas, but you mentioned the Crimean war and military history is one of my 'things'. So, the Crimean war was a catalyst in changing the situation in Europe that did eventually contribute to the other things you talked about, like WWI, but not entirely in the ways you implied. First, at the time the European powers, particularly England and Prussia were fearful of the rise of Russia. They feared that Russia becoming a 1st rate power would break the balance of power and threaten their own positions. This is primarily why England was involved in the Crimean war to begin with. Prussia didn't get in on the war, but they actually wanted to join with England in a war to permanently ensure Russia's defeat. The French ended the Crimean war before this could happen however. Second, before the war Austria was allied with Russia, while England, France, and Prussia all viewed Russia as a threat. Austria was in competition with Prussia for dominance of the German sphere. All of this would change in the aftermath of the Crimean war. Austria essentially avoided getting sucked into the war by breaking their alliance with Russia. This left Austria isolated diplomatically and left them open to aggression by the other powers. They would subsequently lose wars with Italy, France, and Prussia. The Crimean war was instrumental in helping the Italian unification because it both allowed Piedmont-Sardinia (which would eventually become Italy) to ally with the French, and left Austria (one of the primary enemies of Italian unification) vulnerable and alone. The net result of all of this was that it broke down relations between Austria and Russia, leaving them at odds over power in the Balkans, and it left Austria as a second tier power beholden to Prussian Germany for backing. The Crimean war didn't really lead to a decline of Russia, exactly. Rather what it did was expose that they were technologically and industrially completely outclassed. Worse yet, it showed that their administration and military leadership were completely incompetent. This would lead to a lot of pressure in Russia to modernize. If they wanted to compete as a power in Europe, they had to increase industry, build better infrastructure (trains and transportation especially) and they desperately needed to restructure their administration. Russia would start working on this, but it also produced a lot of desire among the people for social reforms. Most of the Russian populace still lived as peasant farmers with very few civil rights and basically no voice in government etc. The Tsars generally (but not universally) tended to resist giving up any power and thus it created a lot of social conflict. To illustrate the point that this wasn't exactly a decline, by the time of WWI, the German military leadership believed that war with Russia was inevitable, and they believed that they absolutely had to fight that war sooner rather than later. They believed that if they didn't defeat Russia within a decade or so, that Russia would essentially be unstoppable. In any case, probably the biggest contribution of the Crimean war to WWI was that it lead to the realignment of alliances among the powers. Prior to the Crimea, France England and Prussia were aligned on one side and Austria and Russia were on the other. Germany and Italy had not yet been unified. Shortly after the Crimea, Italy would be united by bringing France and Austria into war with each other. While Germany would be united under Prussian dominance at the expense of France. This meant that France and Germany were now firmly aligned against each other in animosity. Russia was opposed to Austria because they both had interests in the Balkans and because Austria had refused to support them in the Crimean war. Austria, needing allies would turn to Germany. Both France and Russia needing allies would turn to each other forming the Entente. Britain was not formally involved, but was essentially on-board with France and Russia. Thus the stage was set for WWI.

So we keep meatless fast on all Fridays As there is a 12 day feast after Christmas do we not fast on Friday’s? We go to the Tridentine Latin form of the mass where every Friday is a fast day if that helps. As converts from evangelicalism still finding our way round.

You're Catholic. There's no "trads" or "Novus Ordo". One is a type of totally acceptable Mass and the other is a label made up by people who have problems with pride and being charitable towards others. You ask your sponsor or priest questions like this because you're going to get all kinds of answers asking strangers on a secular website.

Actually trads keep weekly fasts every Friday I did not think no is ordo did? Further we’ve been called Trads I did not invent this label that’s been hung on us for preferring a mOre ancient form. We also attend Byzantine and Melkite forms. There are at .east 14 forms of the mass preceding the norvus ordo. Those Catholics that attend these forms have had the word Trads assigned to us by who?

There's one thing that most people don't know . Jesus was in a manger There were donkeys it doesn't say that in The Bible. When the shepherds heard that Jesus was born a new exactly where it was at It was the Lock tower. That can be found in Genesis Because the shepherds Rotate the sheep And wrapped him in sword and clothes So they will get no scratch or bruise these were the sheep For the sacrifices This was a special place so when the angels told The shepherds Jesus was born they knew where to go. But the wise man didn't know where it was that's what they needed the star to follow.

OK AD. Anno Domini is the year of our Lord so how could Jesus have been born in 5 AD. That's saying he was born 5 years after he was born. His birth year would always be 1 AD because AD begins recording after his birth prior to that it would have been BC. Saying he was born in 4 BC is saying he was born before he was born. Keep it simple he was born in 1 AD. The question is when was 1AD really? If you are saying he was born in 5 AD, it means the calendar is off by 5 years. In that case its really 2017 AD. This is why it was changed to BCE, before the common era because many historical dates are incorrect

No offense but these guys are so wrong about the Star of Bethlehem. The Church fathers would be ashamed that a Catholic priest doesn’t know the tradition and teaching of what the star was. It was miraculous!!! Not a planet, it moved, appeared and disappointed, was visible during the day and not seen by everyone. The star terminated in Jesus upon the 3 wise kings arrival. It happened once and will never happen again. It was not astronomical at all. Some even say it was in our Earths atmosphere. Study up father 🙏🏻
