Hi my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent come from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I will only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people will consider this the lowers time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After, trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I are have been living full-time in my self convert van.

Emi, in my opinion having a lot as a base camp for whenever you want it or need it would be a good thing 😊 especially after we’ve dealt with the pandemic and things like that. If the fuel costs keep getting high and driving as much isn’t feasible you would have a base camp. Also having a lot for when you get older would be good. And I could just see you building the most beautiful tiny home on there to be off grid. With your amazing wood skills! I say go for it❤

I’m 65 and live out of my van. But decided that I wanted a place that nobody could come knock on my door and tell me to move, not that that’s ever happened yet. But now I own a smash parcel of land and am building a tiny house. So glad I made this decision. It’s paid for! So I say hi for it if that’s what you want to do.😊

And the land requires constant attention, even when you are on the road, to remain habitable when you are there. And to worry about when you are not. Big decision. Having said that, I notice that many van-life KZbinrs are buying land and building homes. People change, priorities change.

if you decide to buy a lot be sure to check with local code and make sure that you can park your van on it and live in it until you decide to build a tiny house or whatever you choose to do. I know I’m retired gentleman who bought a couple of acres in the Ocala national Forest in Florida to park his RV during the winter months and live in it only to find out he could not park his RV on it unless there was a permanent structure “a house” on the land.

I heard from an old friend of mine who is a Vet & wanted to do the same - all that freaking land and you can't use it. Ocala mayor, I'm told hates the homeless sleeping in vehicles and parking in shopping centers, BUT when you try to buy a secluded, off tne grid piece of land to park --- NOOOOO🙄 Marion County, Florida & Putnam County Florida suck. All that cheap undeveloped land & you can't use it unless you put thousands of dollars to develop a $2K piece of land🤬

I just fine ….. for me personally ……. I like a home base, so if I am unwell, or just need a break, where I don’t have to worry about safety, I can be here, thenI head off when and where I want too. A tiny house on a lot is a perfect idea. It’d be a great ‘base of operations’ that your vanlife journeys begin from and end at. You’d have time to rest, recuperate, heal up if you ever get sick, send mail to, etc. if you build it on a trailer, you can always relocate it. ALSO, you could moor a houseboat there and live on the lake. ;-)

It's interesting that mobile homes are the obvious answer for a lot of people, but they get such a negative rap. If you call it a "tiny home" then you can justify $150k or more on just the mobile home. Mobile homes let you evade a lot of the zoning and building code restrictions because it is not permanently affixed to the ground. The water, electric, and septic - yeah. Talk about five star!

My little house is my "piece of the rock". Nobody can tell you to leave in the middle of the night. Just make sure you have available power and can put in septic tank if you need it eventually. And if you need to sell it it will be more valuable in the future. Who knows.... you might want to build on it someday. I know I won't want to be floating around in my later years. I love my home. I love my trailer too. After being on the road, I look forward to coming home. Just like Chrome was "so looking forward" to getting back to his shop. We all love you Emi.

I think you're right about home ownership. We want a lot of things because society tells us to. And we don't always ask ourselves if we genuinely want those things, or even weigh the pros and cons. Because my job pays pretty good, just about all my co workers own a home. But I have this one co worker who rents a home. And he's perfectly happy. He's been renting for decades. Even back when homes weren't so expensive.

You said in your last video that places got closed for overnight camping/sleeping and this is very common in my country, Norway. So buying land seems very smart and you can share it if you arent there all the time. Bob in Cheap RV living, USA is also looking into and encouraging people to buy land. I think people could afford land if they buy together and divide into smaller spaces for vans or tiny houses. If the permit allows for it because I think permits will possible be more and more strict so better buy now than loose out when regulations gets stricter like here in Norway. Regulations here and in many European countries demands for building codes that will cost millions to build a home.

@@nia6849 as far as I'm aware..we don't RV restricted property living zones...I lived in a glide on camper for 10 years while building my own house no rules were in place.

Emi, you should get one of those donuts that are soft for Kelley instead of the cone. That's what I have for my cats. 💖🐈💖 I think that having a plot a land where you can plant fruit and nut trees would be nice as a base. That is what I want to do, not a house. 💖

I don’t think you can go wrong with land as an investment. Just never buy in a subdivision where you have to follow their rules and know the rules of jurisdiction you buy in. Lots to think about.

The bank wins on all those beautiful houses. You are in a good place financially without those homes. Very wise. Love ❤️ these videos!!

A land lot with water or water access would be a good investment! If you wanted to build a cabin I don't think you would get bored, besides you could still take off and hit the road whenever you wanted. 😀

I love the idea myself. A tiny home as a vacation rental for sustained income and, potentially a place to park in between trips.

Emi, I had a cat for 14 years that use to get places on his head and between shoulders like Kelly. His was due to a food allergy. After a trip to the vet and food change he was good. 😊 Good luck on land..

Constant traveling and finding a place to sleep has got to be tiring but if you have a place to call your own, you can come home to rest. Even with a nice campervan, our house is always more comfortable and the van will sit in our heated garage until next spring. Good luck.

Take all the time you need to make that decision. At this point it doesn't seem to be something you absolutely need, but thinking of alternatives if life circumstances should change is always good. Kelly does seem to be a bit displeased with you at the moment. 😻

I think land would be a very practical decesion. It would give you a place to rest, but you could still travel whenever you wanted! Practically speaking, if you were sick or not able to travel as much one day, it would be a home base. I live in Michigan where traveling to warmer states for part of the year is very common. Why not have the option? Goodluck!

It's great to buy if you can afford it. You can keep your van go when you like. But you never know what the future may bring, so it good to have a choice.

Your wheels are turning. You're on the right track, that a piece of property would be wise esp for any uncertainties in the future should a place to sleep becomes more and more limited, esp if homelessness situation keeps rising and your favorite places continue to close . I think having a property would be a relief to you. If you build a tiny dwelling you could rent it out ie on airbnb sometimes. You could park your van in the driveway. You could even grow a garden of greens if you are so inclined. I do think it would be exciting to plan and build an inexpensive resourceful natural materials tiny home. Get a hold of an old "Shelter" book copy. All kinds of fun resourceful ideas in there. That book came out in the early 70's by I think by the old-fashioned Mother Earth News. Cob houses are built in your vicinity. They're very esthetic I know you want to keep it simple. Rooting for you.

Oh the dreaded cone. Put some over the counter antifungal antibacterial and hydrocortisone cream mixed together on it and rub it in. Buy them separately at Walmart, use tiny amounts and mix together then apply.

It's been my experience that having land is the best "safe haven" - knowing that you have a place to go to escape whatever you feel the need to get away from. Houses are money pits. Land will always be the vest investment. How big of a house do we really need? a tiny house or even just your van would be great! I follow 2 couples on line that are van dwellers that bought property tylerandtodd and vanwives. You wuil never be bored because there is ALWAYS something to do. I think you're on the right track - whether a garden, sauna, dome, there is no place like home. I wish you the best. Looking forward to seeing your new place
