Lorin LaFave’s son Breck Bednar loved gaming, but in 2014 he was groomed, lured to a meeting, then murdered by an online predator at the age of just 14. A reconstruction of these tragic and horrifying events was broadcast on BBC3's 'Murder Games: The Life and Death of Breck Bednar'.
Lorin set up the Breck Foundation to raise awareness of online grooming, and show youngsters how to play safe.
This talk provides an opportunity to hear Lorin give her personal account of online grooming.

It is one of the most admirable traits in humans to be able to take their loss, horror, guilt and pain and instead of being buried or paralysed by it, find the courage to turn instead to making a difference in the world in their child's name.

I think campaigning for changes in law, parental awareness etc etc is the only thing that get's them through their grief. They take the biggest negative & turn it into a positive.

The saddest thing is that she did everything right and it still wasn’t enough to save her son. I hope she realizes that what happened wasn’t her fault at all. It was horrible police work.

She is an incredibly strong woman. Talking about such a heartbreaking story, especially when your own son is the victim, must be harder than I could even imagine. Much respect to her as well as the triplets. R.I.P Breck

I just stumbled upon this story here in the United States. It brought back so many memories for me when I was a young male and groomed by a predator. Luckily for me my predator was caught with another young boy and was arrested and serving 75 years in prison. My sincere condolences to Brek’s family , may you find comfort and peace in knowing what you are doing will save another child. God Bless you.

The people at the boy's school were idiots to brush it off as "he'll be fine when he starts dating." Or to assume everything is just fine just because his grades were good. How incredibly shallow.

My view is that lessons need to be learnt. I am an old guy and had never known that friending and unfriending was a thing , what about sincerity ? Is that something that can be chucked out of the window nowadays ? What is called coding nowadays and used to be called programming in my day is based on binary arithmetic and Boolean logic more than anything else so learning D'Morgans rules is the right place to start not mis information peddled by giant computer corperations. Similarly learning to encrypt is not a thing because it is a digital process and not something you can do in your head , no you need to learn how to construct an encryption device. What Danes was teaching Breck was the art of concealing the truth , for which there is a word for , transviapiscenation but not something you would learn at school. Then there is the statistically nigh on impossible chain of events that led to Brecks sad death. Leaving his private school was like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. The church , the community centre , social services and the probation service allowed Danes a dominant position in his kiddy game groups , wolves in sheep's clothing all of them. I can see now that he was using his "server" to hold connection data on all the groups he was moderating , not rocket science. I don't think my saying this will change anything but if people want to carry on down this road , I will not be the one to stop them.

So sorry but the father to let him go in a taxi at that time in the morning!! and the mum asking why did you let him go? The father answers oh i thought it was all safe now you didn't let me know?! like WTF this father let his son go in that taxi miles away and didn't bother to check the address or anything! how could he have done this! His son is now dead and murdered horrifically!! How does this father live with himself!! And the poor mum even spoke to this predator on line in person and heard his voice!! This is just too sad! How can she be so brave after losing the love of her life her precious son? She is an amazing lady and I'm so heart broken for her! Her son thought she was stupid as they do at this age!! I bet poor Breck was thinking OMG mum was right why didn't i listen to my mum she wasn't an idiot like i thought she was!!! How heartbreaking it took this murder to happen to make a change and yet it's still happening!! What is upsetting is that its under when children kill children this guy wasn't a child this Lewis that murdered her son so that doco isn't right. Where were this murderers parents? it never says. And where do we find the emails he sent this poor mum from prison! OMG how did he get away with that???

She should’ve never gone to the UK, there’s no rights for her son. She should’ve raised her family in the US, maybe gone to a state in the US that’s safer. You think the UK is safe and a good place? No.

Yeah the UK is not safe for children, even these posh surrey neighborhoods! She was stupid for doing that! She could’ve moved her children somewhere better and safer, she was an idiot for that. If she stayed somewhere nice in the US or gone to some safer countries in Asia, the kids would’ve been fine.

so hang on this poor mum says perhaps this predator tried to come on to him and Breck said No but wait on I'm not gay or whatever! this Lewis still bought duct tape so No he would have had it all planned out to tie him up obviously ! So so sad!! he had planned to murder him obviously and sending pics of decapitated terrorism pics showed he was going to murder not just be mates with him and have a relationship!! How horrific!

Breck made the decision to go meet this stranger. I don't fault the mom, but clearly all contact with lewis should have been cut off! If you feel your child is being groomed, forbid and cut all contact. He didn't need to be online. She should have forbid all contact, she is the parent. Clearly, bret could not handle being online.
