Syria is the new Afghanistan. Its capital, Damascus, is right in the middle of all important trade routes within the Middle East. It serves as a chokepoint for trade in the Middle East. World powers will fight over who gets to control said trade routes. Only difference is that unlike Afghans, who are super nationalists, Syrians are divided and fighting among themselves. There is no way Syria is going to see peace for at least the next 20 years.

His prediction of the military situation is dead wrong. The Assad regime collapsed in just a week with practically no resistance whatsoever. Russia and Iran lost big in Syria.

The words leverage and alleviate are also related to the word levitate or Levant. In Spanish, llevar means "to carry" or "to lift." Leverage originally relates to the idea of lifting or raising something with the aid of a tool (a lever). Alleviate - Let us say you are holding a 20 kg bag, and someone tries to lift it by applying some force. As a result, you would have to bear less weight.
