Are you a fan of Daggerheart's way of including Characters in World Building...and is this something you'd consider when making a D&D or Pathfinder campaign? Let us know!
@charless24507 ай бұрын
Yes, I do like it. With D&D or Pathfinder it would depend on if I was using an established setting/campaign or homebrewing my own. In the later case I would absolutely let the players have a say like Daggerheart does or like you outlined in your homebrewed campaign you detailed in the video. If I'm using a premade campaign though, I tend to just stick with the default setting to minimize confusion.

World building to me was fun as a storyteller. That is why I admire Matt Mercer...he had the whole world fleshed out and seeing it grow a marvel. These tools in this system are well thought out. Whether it's collaborative or from one mind the tools can make it better.

I love the sound of the kind of back and forth nature to world building. Being able to start off with some vague world concepts, then going to players to add some ideas, before kind of ironing them out and then going back to them for even more details and repeating that over and over as time goes on just sounds amazing when it comes to getting players invested in the world, creating unique worlds/stories, and making sure everyone has a say in the direction of the campaign. Definitely want to look into this more now.

Collaborations are only as strong as the group. Sounds like you lucked out with some great world-builders among your players!

In my finances campaign (last time we were using dnd) our 2 year ran game was in a way formed by everyone! I love narration driven things because it just flows organically! We are going to do a test run of daggerheart here soon with a new table! Im stoked and already know what I want to do sort of~ my fiance is also a home brewer, sooo that can further open possibilities! Over all im stolked! Its true there is never just 1 person forming a story its everyone doing the telling through their character and actions when one truly thinks about it.

I had a DM run a game of The Quiet Year as a fun map building process to create areas of the world we would be playing in.
@AznHeat11877 ай бұрын
As with any game you can create your own world rather than having a setting given to you but its up to the group on whats ok and whats not especially in set worlds if players have different views of established lands. TLDR its a group choice in any game to create and while it could be daunting it can be amazing

Could i get a pdf of the questions you used for world building? It sounds like an amazing process my group would love.

As someone used to more collarboative narrative games that has it built in to dicuss and for players ot offer consequences or sit and worldbuild caked into the mechanics this is not a big deal at all. 5e players scream foul whenever there is something outside of their status quo.
@TheCharacterSheet7 ай бұрын
We found it really didn't slow things down much at all, and it got the players invested very, very fast
@Idontgiveaduck6 ай бұрын
It was a nightmare to run for a bunch of anxious ND players ngl. We needed more structure. So when i did run Daggerheart i actually used Thedas (from Dragon Age) so my friends had some idea of the world to go off. We are continuing the campaign with 5e cuz honestly while we all want to play in a Daggerheart game -none of us wanted to actually run a long term campaign with the beta rule set.
@GamerKatz_19717 ай бұрын
It's great in theory, but here is the problem. The vast majority of gaming groups will use this to give their characters unholy amounts of power, loot, etc. And for groups where one person is only into hack and slash, one person is only into writing the most elaborate character background they can, one person only wants to play on their phone and tell college-level jokes, and another person just wants to talk about their new magic card, 'Collaborative' is a word that is not going to poke up too often. Yes this system is great for groups like Critical Role, but honestly how many of those groups actually exist in the gaming community? Honestly?

Have a look at the „Same Page Tool“ for RPGs and go over the questions asked there beforehand with your group. Helps tremendous amounts to make sure, you are all… well… on the same page, really.

I do believe that storytelling suffers when there are too many cooks in the kitchen.
@TheCharacterSheet7 ай бұрын
It can, but when you focus the scope of it while the GM holds the reigns of the narrative and plot points, it worked out really well

@@spectrumunit Okay, this is a very weird reply. At me. Reply.
@scottswgoh66377 ай бұрын
@@spectrumunit have to say that I have to agree with Hunter. Let the DM design the world. Part of the issue is to many people dont actually have a world. they have a few cliff notes and if that is how the game is running the world then sure have everyone chip in. But if the DM has developed a living world there should be reasons for why things are where they are. A player says I want a town here and its full of XYZ when in the dms world they are extinct or far west of there could cause them a lot of issues. If the players want to say I would love a world where we did this or focused on that etc in a broad terms before the game starts the dm has the option of putting you into a place in their world where those opportunities might make sense.

Collaborative world building will only work within groups that know each other well and there's a good deal of trust that everyone is working together. For many of my groups over the years, most of them, this would absolutely be a disaster. Of the three groups I'm part of now, only one would I even suggest this. I can see this going really well or being a total clusterf**k.
@TheCharacterSheet7 ай бұрын
True, this is definitely a litmus test, but to be fair, do you really wanna play with a group that fails that test?
@mjphyil7 ай бұрын
@@TheCharacterSheet Yes, yes I do, and I am doing that now, every group is different. Just because a player doesn't want to world build, or their idea is way off what the rest of the table wants, doesn't mean I don't want to play with them. It does mean the game is going to be different - less or no collaboration. I think it's plain stupid to say no, everyone should be collaborating. I've been gaming for 40 years with 100's of people and can honestly say the best campaigns I've been a part of there was no collaborative world building.
