And now for the truth. Tommy was kicked out of BW because of his constant drama. He's a big fan of Trump and has a huge victim complex. He tried to sue their manager and lost. He set up a GoFundMe that was shut down because it was fraudulent. Vext is an absolute clown of the highest order. His live vocals were shocking when I saw the band; I was shocked how different it was to on record, the amount of pitch correction needed. He's now sunk back into obscurity where he belongs.

I was glad you noticed the lyric change. That's what makes the style change hit so hard. Delores had this sad haunting vibe that was mournful of the death and destruction. This version is filled with more pain and anger that it's STILL happening around the world. They changed "same old theme since 1916" to "same old theme in 2018" and they changed the weapon order from "tanks, bombs, bombs guns" to "tanks, bombs, guns, drones". This is my first Bad Wolves song. My sister is a huge fan of theirs and I'm a huge fan of the Cranberries. One day one of us got the song stuck in our heads and we ended up humming it together and we couldn't figure out how each other knew the song. So she introduced me to this and I introduced her to Delores, which helped her understand the video.

The first time I heard this, the change from 1916 to 2018 and the addition of "drones" really hit me because 100 years later here we still are, killing each other. It reminded me of The Green Fields of France with "Did they really believe that this war would end wars?"

Yeah I love what they changed lyrically but for me the tone is generic. In her voice you can feel the anger and the bitterness. But for me he is too polished. Funny that I like it and it irks me at the same time. And obviously that's just how I find it, clearly others find it the other way.

This cover always makes me want to cry. It's so hurt and mournful and such a beautifully done ode to Dolores, may her soul know peace. The minor lyric changes hit hard, showing how those fighting may change, those crying may change, those dying may change, but the reasons stay the same and it is truly heartbreaking that we still have not learned from the past.

I love this version, there's so much pain in their voices... and it always gives me chills how it went from "since 1916" to "in 2018" and the only thing that changed is that there are drones now, yet the violence continues, it speaks volume about humankind. It's a marvellous tribute

Exactly. The use of "in 2018" and also the inclusion of drones in the bridge make me think of "Why TF is this still an issue with humans? Why are we still doing this?" And the use of the hard beat for the chorus inhabits that rage.

Like considering the lyrics/imagery of the original “Land of Confusion” by Genesis (video included) with Disturbed’s rendition nearly 20 years later. One could easily bring it forward to today, another 18 years since 10k Fists. Or backwards, to any era of history you so choose. Some themes are timeless, because the forces driving them in the human condition are also timeless and enduring. It’s both sad and sobering at the very least. Ecclesiastes 8:9

I watched this cover reaction directly after watching The Cranberries' original reaction. I must say, what absolutely struck me so hard was where Delores' delivery was quiet and haunting with a controlled undertone of rage, this version comes in like "did you really not hear us, we'll say it louder for those in the back" in terms of delivery on the original message. Particularly with the addition of drones and the change to 2018 in the lyrics. The layers of the voice on that final chorus she's talking about to me are reminscient of shrapnel. Like they are just tearing at anything they can rip through. It's so explosive. That "sweeping" near the end to me sounds like a synthed clip of Delores woven into the mix. But it also sort sounds like when you are rubbing against glass. Like she still wishes to be heard from the other side. I love both versions of this song so much. It's heartwrenching that these lyrics are still being lived out by so many around the world, even here as we near 2024. The capacity for violence within humans is so immense... but so is the capacity for love and kindness. Choose the later. Always.

The sweeping sound is actually just a effect, called a "flanger", layered on the lead guitar. Flangers were popular in the 80s back when digital manipulation of music was just coming about. It's the same effect used on Queen's "Killer Queen" when Freddie sing's "dynamite with the laser beam", to give that lyrics a futuristic splash. I do think it was used in conjunction with the imagery here in the video, where the model (who I presume to be a stand-in for Delores) is painting the last bit of glass, becoming no longer visible. Almost a metaphor for her passing.

Dolores herself told the band how much she loved this cover and she was so excited to sing on it with them, and she was supposed to, the same day she died. Tommy Vext and the band had asked Dolores’ mother Eileen for permission to release the video because after they found out Dolores died they debated not to, but went on to do it with Eileen’s blessing and for Dolores’ honor and memory. Their music video even shows the lady in gold to represent Dolores. And they even had her write on the mirror the day Dolores died. It was so tragic. Dolores was so excited to sing on this, that’s why her death is still speculated to this day. There are people who don’t believe it was an accident and there are people who believe she did it on purpose. I know she’s looking down on this seeing that the band donated all proceeds from this to Dolores’ children, she’d be so happy. Can definitely feel her always ❤

I love this song so much and put it right up there with Disturbed's Sound of Silence. Both originals are sad warnings of tragedy and the covers express the rage that the tragedy is ongoing. If you can bear the heartache I would also recommend Five Finger Death Punch's cover of Gone Away by The Offspring as I put it in the same category. Watching both as a double feature to compare the two versions would be incredible!

The original of this was actually about the Irish actively fighting. It wasn't a warning that they would fight it was a story about what had already been going on. How people were afraid of and even scared of the Irish. "You see it's not me it's not my family" is expressing that not everyone is bad, not everyone wants to fight, most want peace back and are peaceful. The kids who died in the song actually died, "another head hangs lowly, child is slowly taken" was about a boy who was killed but he was injured first and died slowly in a hospital... The year she gives us the year the wars and then unrest began and she was crying out that it needed to end that they were better than this killing....

I never really appreciated this song or Dolores singing style until I moved (ironically) to Warrington; the town were the bombings that brought about this song, the whole thing hits different. I can only compare it to reading about an event (Hiroshima) and then actually going to the place (Hiroshima again but also Warrington Town Centre), things just hit different after that. As for lyrical changes they changed "tanks, bombs, bombs guns" to "tanks, bombs, bombs , drones" - I initially expected tanks, bombs, *guns*, drones; to cover 4 instruments of destruction, as well as 1918 to 2018 that you picked up on.

@@lauraallen55 "In The End"? It actually performed quite decently. I think the reason why it's not really talked about is because none of the songs, outside of "All Over Now", really have the emotional punch that Cranberries songs are known for. However, most of the albums had 40-50 songs written for them, plus they would sometimes rework and finish songs they wrote for a previous album for their upcoming one. "In The End" didn't have a huge pool of work to pick and choose the best material from. It's a great album, though, and shows that even Delores' not-exactly-best work is still really good.

Another little thing that I appreciate about the singing in the song is that they didn't try to force doing the signature "yodel" during the repeated "eh, eh, eh." That part of the original song has been memed to death over the years by, mostly, people that don't really appreciate the true meaning of the song. I have been requesting this for awhile and am very happy you came around to finally giving it a go. I was happy to hear when this song released that a portion of the money raised from digital spins would be donated to Dolores' children. to my knowledge at least $250,000 has been donated. Bad Wolves still perform this song with their new lead singer Daniel "DL" Laskiewicz. The song still hits home when DL sings it. Find a live version on youtube and the crowd will go all in and sing with lighters/cell phone lights waving. Its extremely emotional and moving. For reasons that need not be covered here, Vext is no longer with the band and DL has taken the reins. They do not play too many songs from the first 2 Vext albums live (Disobey and N.A.T.I.O.N.) due to the personal nature of many of the songs. But DL has fronted their last 2 albums (Dear Monsters and Die About It). Hope this shines a little bit of clarity on the bands current status.

This is the first song from Bad Wolves I ever heard. I was so impressed. I saw them live at Capones in Johnson City, TN. The lead singer is a massive dude. There was no A/C he was pouring sweat and still performed absolutely amazing. Will see them again if they come back this way.

A new post, exciting! I have to say a great bad for you to listen to is Chevelle! Pete Loeffler is definitely an anytime voice to me from soft and clear vocals to great harsh vocals leaving me with feelings of anger and sadness (in a good way!). A great song that gives a mix of both vocal styles is, the Red. Interestingly enough at one point 3 family members all played in the band together...what a skilled family.

In case of Bad Wolves, I have a few songs that are my go-to for them. "Killing Me Slowly", "Remember When", "Learn To Walk Again", "Lifeline" and "If Tomorrow Never Comes" (the last one has 2 versions - the original and feat. Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills). There's also a banger from The HU featuring the current vocalist of Bad Wolves - "Black Thunder".

Oh, this video. Tears, streaming down my face, every time. The way "Dolores" is desperately painting on the window, trying to get her voice heard from the other side, and then she finally at the end is satisfied that her message got across so she turns and peacefully walks away. 😭😭😭 Also, I'm a 50 year old woman, and rock/metal manages to touch my soul in a way that not much else does, so it's nice to hear a musical expert come to appreciate it the way that you expressed here. ❤

I loved the Cranberries version, but this version blew me away, Dolores voice added to this heavy version would have made it perfect. I was fortunate to see Bad Wolves perform this song live, and it was immense, it's such an iconic song, and Bad Wolves took it to another level. It's a shame that Tommy went somewhat off the rails, which caused his departure from Bad Wolves after their second album, such a great vocalist, but a troubled one it seems.

Well, if you can look past his politics(and I recognize that some of his new songs ARE political), Tommy's still making some very meaningful, beautiful songs on his own. Strong For Someone Else is a fantastic song about how being there for someone else helped him save his own life. Even if you dont listen to a single other one of his songs, I would recommend you listen to that one.

He has cleaned up quite a bit recently. He made amends with Bad Wolves, but said he will probably never perform with them and it really split their fan base in half. It also shows that Tommy brought so much for the band and they really don't have that same heart beat in newer music.
@Mystress1980
@Mystress1980 Жыл бұрын
@@ProjectGRIDLOKTI like about as many of their songs with Daniel as I did with Tommy, so I'd have to respectfully disagree that they've lost any ground. I find Daniel's voice more versatile. Also, Tommy has one of the worst cases of Lead Singer Disease I've seen in modern bands, so I doubt they'd bring him back in, even if that's what he truly wanted.
@ProjectGRIDLOKT
@ProjectGRIDLOKT Жыл бұрын
@@Mystress1980 you can respectfully disagree, but their success post vs prior Tommy's firing says otherwise. Even their album N.A.T.I.O.N. did better than most of what they've done since D joined. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's a bad vocalist. Just don't mix up versatility with delivery. Tommy's voice resonates much better with the fans and he had a very big following and fanbase just by himself. I'm not saying they fell off, but it's very clear that they are not as successful with D vs Tommy. I feel a lot of fans are split like with Killswitch Engaged where they've had 2 separate leads who had different levels of success with the same band.

I have never made a suggestion on here before but I would humbly point you in the direction of the song “Eat your Young” by Hozier. He’s an Irish singer/songwriter and I feel like he is continuing some of the themes that Dolores and The Cranberries were highlighting with “Zombie”. See??? THIS is why you are one of my favorites! You did it AGAIN! I can trust that if you are reacting to something I don't know (or in this case that I have completely forgotten), that I will learn something AND occasionally find a new artist I gladly add to my 'repertoire! I wasn't much interested in the original. Mostly because I didn't know the backstory and the inspiration for the Cranberries. That brief guitar solo is such a wonderful example of 'channeling the emotion' of a song rather than just 'showing off' for the spotlight. This is an amazing cover. Actually, "resurrection" might be a better description considering all the circumstances. What an homage! Another great reaction, Elizabeth!

I was absolutely STOKED to hear that Dolores O'Riordan was going to add her vocals to this cover....then the news of her death hit me like a freight train. Then I heard this rendition, and saw that Bad Wolves was donating the proceeds to her children...broke me even worse in the best possible way. Well played gents...well played. With the opening piano and the background story given at the beginning, I can never help but feel the same feelings loss every time I listen. And they're not typical generic "someone died and that's sad" feelings. They are personal, like I lost someone dear to me, even though I didn't know Delores. And the pain and anger conveyed by Tommy's voice become my own. This is the definition of good art: it makes you feel.
