Floor started playing in the rock band After Forever in 1997. Simone started one year of pop vocal lessons at the age of 14 in 1999 And Simone switched to operatic vocal lessons at the age of 15 in 2000 after hearing Nightwishes OCeanborn. Timeline doesnt match up if Simone learned Floor about rock vocals.

the Netherlands is blessed with some of the greatest female vocal lead singers and bands: - Anneke van Giersbergen: grand lady of Dutch metal and inspiration of Floor. Singer of The Gathering until 2007, now on a solo career. - Floor Jansen well known: After Forever, Revamp, Nightwish and a project called Nortward with Jørn Viggo Lofstad of Pagan's Mind. - Simone Simons: Epica and MaYan. - Sharon den Adel: Within Tempatation, Sharon is a singing autodidact and designs her own stage-outfit. - Charlotte Wessels: Delain - Diana van Giersbergen: Ex Libris and Xandria. Not related to Anneke. Sharon and Anneke sing together the "Best Duet"on YT called Somewhere. Highly recommended Simone and Floor also did on the same Retrospect Stabat Matar Dolorosa a 12th century hymn on music of 17th century composer Pergolosi. (one of many composer for this hymn (21+)).

@cyberjarl4 жыл бұрын
The man who shouts "Floor Jansen" at the end with a growling voice is Mark Jansen (no family relation). Both he and Floor were together in a band called After Forever in the 90s/early 2000s until Mark quit the band due to creative differences. He went on to found Epica with his girlfriend at the time - Simone. Simone and Floor are close friends and have been for years - this is why they have such good chemistry on stage. Mark and Simone are no longer a couple, but they still work very well together. Simone is married with Oliver Polotai, the keyboards player of another metal band : Kamelot (in fact she was pregnant during this show which is why she didn't headbang as violently as Floor xD ) . Kamelot was the support band during Nightwish's 2012 Imaginaerum US tour, during which then-Nightwish-vocalist Anette Olzon fell ill minutes before their Denver show. Kamelot's session vocalists Elize Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz covered for Anette and the show went on while she was hospitalized. Nightwish's decision to go forward with the show upset Anette and she publicly criticized the band on her blog. This was the last straw in Anette's and Nightwish's already troubled relationship and days later, the band fired her, with Floor acting as her replacement for the remainder of the tour. We know the rest of the story. Elize Ryd was also considered by Nightwish as a vocalist - way back in 2005 when they fired their first vocalist, Tarja Turunen. They thought Elize was too young and inexperienced at the time and went with Anette instead. Elize went on to found her own band, Amaranthe. Unrelated to this, on their first album with Anette, Nightwish released a song titled Amaranth. Is your head spinning yet? XD

I was at the Denver show and it was amazing. They asked the audience to vote if we wanted to go home or for them to try to do the show with Kamelot's singers and a lot of Karaoke from us and all hands shot up in the air. It was not Nightwish's decision, Tuomas looking very nervous behind Troy and gave us a choice go home and hope to catch another show in 3 to 5 years or to go on with the show. So it was the audiences decision to go forward with the show not just Nightwish, but they did give us the option and to was a wild ride and a very magical night.

Every time I watch them together on stage I think of how cool it would be to sing for large public with your best friend, both being in their own band. At the time she thought she had to choose between the two, until she heard Dutch band The Gathering with singer Anneke van Giersbergen. Floor and Simone collaborated numerous times over the years. Ayreon used their voices for a number of rock opera's that he made in the 90's early 00's together with one of the singers of The Gathering, Anneke van Giersbergen. Those three were considered among the best Dutch female vocals at the time in the scene. I don’t know what happens when I comment on such an old video, but the comment belongs here, and I can still copy and paste it if it should go unnoticed. Before I start: I like your channel for many reasons. You are positive about every song you listen to. I see you wince when a singer is out of key, but you never say a word. Whatever they are, you always find the good things to point out. You are always prepared. You know everybody’s names and enough background to do the singers justice. You have a great perception. You notice things about performances when hearing them for the first time which have not caught my attention after hearing them dozens of times. And on top of that, you still manage to enjoy the music very much. Kudos for that. You are curious whether Simone has adjusted her singing to match Floor. To me, it is clearly Floor who is matching Simone’s singing. It is almost like she is impersonating Simone in this song. Listen to the studio version to check. There have been recommendations already for more Epica songs below. I have been looking for live performances which bring out Simone’s vocal qualities, but found it difficult. There was this show “2 Meter Sessies” on Dutch TV which featured the very early Epica. It is a beautiful recording with choir and orchestra, but Simone is singing very clean all the time. I admire how she can easily go into and out of belt at any pitch. The two recordings I end up recommending are either the official studio recording of “Solitary Ground” (the “alternate version” if you want to talk about post-production, too) or the live recording of “Quietus” from the “Retrospective” anniversary concert. I don’t think that you need to cover even more Nightwish on your channel, but there is one more fun thing Floor can do with her voice which you have not yet listened to. If you like, listen carefully to “Yours is an Empty Hope”. I recommend the recording from the Nightwish cruise in 2015 which is on their channel, but the “Vehicle of Spirit” version will do as well. Now, for my personal recommendation to you. You have dipped into Metal here and there, enjoying the energy and power of the sound. I think you are ready to explore the roots of that genre including my all-time favourite rock singer Ronnie James Dio. He is the guy who put the horns in Metal music, by the way. Unfortunately, he died ten years ago, so most of his performances are quite old and video quality is poor. His best performances are from 1977 when he was on stage in Munich with the band Rainbow, but those videos would look atrocious on your 4 k screen, and you and your audience would have to put up with listening to guitar idol Richie Blackmore entertaining the crowd with Bach or Beethoven in the middle of the song for minutes. KZbin came up with a pretty decent recording from 2007, instead. It is a performance with the band Heaven and Hell in the Radio City Music Hall in NYC. The band consists of former members of the band Black Sabbath who have been the pioneers of Heavy Metal. Back then, Heavy Metal was a slow, bluesy flavour of rock with daunting guitar riffs, and double kick drum pedals had not been invented. I recommend either “Falling Off the Edge of the World” for vocal performance or “Heaven and Hell” for great audience interaction. ... and while I am here: Next Christmas you may want to have a look at the “Christmas Swing Medley” by ONAIR, a German a cappella group.

So glad you chose to review a song by Epica. For my money, they are the best band in the world. Simone and Floor work well together, and they are good friends. Also, the drummer for Epica - Arien Van Weesenbeek - is for sure one of the best metal drummers out there. Symphonic metal is my favorite genre - so glad it is finally beginning to make headway in the USA. It's been popular in Europe since the mid to late 90s, but only the last 5 or 10 years here. Welcome to the symphonic metal world!

Epica ... Unleashed. You really need to check it out , has all the bells and whistles you need and you’ll see the whole range of what Simone and Epica can offer in one song. One of the most beautiful melodies and choruses in their catalog

More from Simone: check out ‘Sensorium’ and ‘The Phantom Agony’ from their DVD ‘we will take you with us’. It’s from their first album and Simone is still very young and already looking and sounding absolutely brilliant. Everything from that DVD is worth checking out. For more recent work check out Consign to Oblivion in the Zentih Paris.

What you will find is that the European Metal Music scene is like a huge extended family where highly talented people will mix and match for the music. Like Floor and Simone knowing each other for a long time, just like Floor knowing Tarja. If you look them up, its amazing them being in many different bands or helping making albums for different artists. They spend a lot of time together on the festival circuit. Floor's vocals can even be heard on some gaming soundtracks. I wish that more of that talent could be known in the US... it is so much better than most of the RAP crap and pop music foisted on us.

Seen the video of this performance a few times. This one always ends up at a brain rattling volume as I strain to hear every intricate detail. Must be an amazing experience for everybody on stage to deviate slightly from their typical concert environment. Obviously it takes an insane amount of rehearsal for each individual element to synchronize the timing of such a calculated effort. With this arrangement, even the slightest deviation from the scripted composition would certainly stand out. Full orchestra. Full choir. Full band. Guest singer. Flawless delivery. Truly epic event. Ohhh.. and, an opera singer at a tool concert?! Cool. That will surely make for an interesting campfire story in a couple decades.. Being a fan of Floor, you would truly be missing out if you haven't seen her new personal youtube channel documenting some recent adventures from her home.. now that concerts have been postponed indefinitely. Great reaction. As always. Thanks!

Elizabeth, as an opera singer you should check out these girls (Simone and Floor) performing on stage Stabat Mater Dolorosa a true opera piece. This piece has never been critiqued by someone who has the knowledge and skills to analyze their true capabilities.

Simone is actually quite shy and soften spoken. You can see how she has opened up if you watch older footage and then new footage. So it’s even more amazing when she starts singing. I’m always blown away This is the Retrospect show for Epica’s 10th anniversary and second show with the orchestra and choir. They did one in 2007 or so but didn’t record video for it, only audio With each new album, Epica has added more live orchestral elements like strings and choirs. Check out their new album and a few songs from their previous album

I'm amazaed that you took this all so well and positive in the first run. I've known both Nightwish and Epica for many years, but where Nightwish is taking you away to another land and dream, Epica is just a full force train going at max speed into your face with a siren chained to the front. Both of them are just wonderful bands, and both of them are a acquired taste. But for me, Epica really needs three or four listenings until I can understand the sound and the structure. It is just so much frontal assault in the beginning. Combining an Epica song with Floor is just making things more difficult. This thing is just madness, pure force, emotion, power. Kudos to you, if you actually were able to understand and disect this song on the first try.

As a singer of the operatic persuasion, I am surprised that you have not yet reacted to Amira Willighagen. For blended voices, her "Flower Duet" with Corlea Botha is iconic. Her duet with Patrizio Buanne ("O Solo Mio") and her "Amazing Grace" (the first time she appears to use her full upper register) are also worthy of attention. However, your starting point should probably be her amazing audition on Holland's Got Talent...

This is probably the best and thorough reaction of Sancta Terra videos I've seen so far.. You can tell that she's an opera singer the way she talks about the percussion(drums), the orchestra, the choirs and of course Floor and Simone's vocal techniques and vocal harmonies.. And it's not even a reaction, it is a review/commentary..

There are two more Dutch symphonic metal bands you should listen to: -> Within Temptation with Sharon den Adel as singer -> Delain with Charlotte Wessels Within Temptation has a wonderful duet with another great Dutch singer Anneke van Giersbergen together with a full orchestra: „Somewhere“ kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZTNdn2Ifr96rMk Apart from that you should watch/listen to some of their official videos: „And we run“ featuring XZibit combining symphonic metal with rap. „Paradise“, a duet with Tarja, the first Nightwish singer. For Delain I can suggest the song/video „Masters of Destiny“

Yes! I'm happy to see you reacted to one of my suggestions, hehehe! And yes, this song has a middle eastern influence, like a lot of their songs too. I think that they both lived together for a while earlier in their careers, if I'm not mistaken, and they may have had the same voice teacher (Amanda Somerville). Yes! The drummer is a BEAST. It's his nickname too, lol! I hope that you explore more of Epica, because they're an amazing band (and they're my favourite alongside Nightwish, so of course I'd be happy to see more of them here, lol). They have an extensive repertoire beginning in the early 2000's with live studio sessions in 2002, so at the very beginning of the band (and Simone's career, who was 17 at the time). Simone also collabed with Kamelot, The Haunting live in 2005 being a good example of how Roy Khan (the then singer of Kamelot) and her had amazing chemistry with their voices.

You've been to a Tool concert?!?!?! Officially the coolest of all reactors. Would love to see you break something of theirs down. Love how you also take the time to discuss the music as a composition as well, not just the vocalists. If you wanted to start doing composition breakdowns, not just reactions, Tool would be a great place to start and I think you could bring a lot to the table on that subject for people to learn from. Really separates you from the rest. Keep it up!!!
