The SK-105 is an Austrian vehicle using the French-style oscillating turret. The design supposedly came with a number of drawbacks, such as stabilisation problems (Stabilising a multi-ton turret instead of just a gun) and NBC problems. However, Austrian engineers had a crack at these problems, creating this prototype vehicle. Here's part 2, the gunner and commander

Austria, a small nation, certainly got bang for their buck in terms of development with this particular tank. They tried out a bunch of ideas, to see what was worth developing in future tanks. I'm guessing they learned a lot. Plus it seems a serviceable tank in its own right for the era, despite its problems. Worst seems the gunner's position. Thanks Chieftain

most ERA (Especially the types designed to interfere with kinetic projectiles) requires a certain thickness of armor behind it, otherwise you'd just blow a hole in your own tank. the 2s25 is designed to be both amphibious and air mobile (Meaning that you can deploy it from a cargo plane on parachutes). Adding extra weight with ERA, or automation systems for the turret like you suggest, would compromise both of those abilities. Why is the switch gear in this Austrian AFV labelled in English, not German? I suspect it’s because they stole/borrowed/bought so much of it from US vehicles.

Probably because the fire control stuff was out of a Leo? But this question made me think... I wasn't a tanker, i was in AAA and i can't remember the lables of the AA gun and radar system. Or which language they were in. We bought the AAA system from swiss manufacturer Oerlikon, but they sold it worldwide (the same AA gun i was trained on is what the argentinians managed to shoot down a Harrier in the Falkands war and damage another one. None of their aircraft managed to do that) With the usually low numbers of things austria bought and buys, my guess would be, the numbers are too low to get our own lableing made. So we most likely get what the majority of customers buy. Also, basically the lable language doesn't matter as you get trained on it anyways. You get trained to find and use any button, lever etc. wihtout looking and under stress, so the lables could be in chinese or windings. (I mean we got drilled into where in our lockers which item of clothing and equipment had to be so if there's alarm, and the base gets blacked out, you could pack your pack wihtout any light and know where everything was.)

@@nirfz thanks for responding. I suppose the switchgear stuck out to me, because it didn’t fit with the expectations I got from flying. In your cockpit, the gauges are probably going to be labelled in one of the official languages of your country. I assumed the same was true for the foot sloggers.

@@CAP198462 oficcial language 😂 Fun fact: We actually have 3 official languages over all, but locally differing: the whole country has german as official language, a few parts of the south additionally have slovene (for the slovene minority on carinthian soil that chose to stay with austria after WW1) and parts of the south east have german and croatian. (for the parts in dispute with hungary after WW1 that decided to stay with austria in a plebiscite in 1919) But i was quite surprised 20 years ago when i had to "check in" to the "hospital for accidents" in vienna when there were forms to fill out in: german, slovene, croatian, czech, slovak, hungarian, turkish, and a frew languages i wasn't able to decipher as quickly what they were. (there were 8 shelves so 8 different languages) And it was 2003 and not 1903...😁

The average Austrian is larger than the average Irish or American. So I'd assume there might have been a system where taller recruits were sent to the M47s and M60s, while the Kürrasiers received the smaller recruits.

The tallest soldiers here in austria usually don't get put into small vehicles, those were always sent to the "guard". (a certain part of the infanters: The guys in "shiny" uniform who stand for hours at the airport in lines when a head of state arrives to show military honors.) And in other weaponries you have more space. I was in AAA and in both the gun and the radar i fit easily with 187cm and even one of buddies with 194 did so too. Also, while massively built evn in his age, Arnold S. isn't the tallest of guys. (as far as i remember he's around 180cm)
