Munk didn't try to prove he is smarter or made himself the center of attention. This is not what you'll find from today's "interviewer, moderator or host"in the western media; particularly the Anglo-American media cartel. They are all vying to be "Stars and Celebrities". They focus the attention on themselves instead of the guest or subject. All in an effort to get promoted and be paid multi-million salary. As such you end up with "entertainers" acting like clowns and Barnum Bailey Ringmaster or worse used car salesman spewing profanities.

this interview shows a very interesting observation, a Chinese scholar can argue and talk about his viewpoints fluently in English to a American host with his good understanding of western culture, but when and where we can have a American scholar to argue and talk about his/her viewpoints in Chinese to a Chinese host with a good understanding of Chinese history and culture....the implication of this observation is when your rivalry can speak your language and know you better than you know them, the game is already over....

The chinese leaders' selection process is to set up a bar for candidates to qualify. Just like playing golf: you have to have a certain number of wins to get the pass to compete for the titles in the Open. The Chinese candidates for leaders are not "invitation only", they have earned their qualifications to govern and proved their capabilities to govern.
People have to remember that western countries didn't become rich because of democracy and freedom of speech but rather colonisation of other countries for over 100 years or longer. Colonisation comes with lootings and stealing of resources and enslavement of their subjects which had contributed greatly to their wealth. Another factor was the west had the edge and upper hand because they were the producers and manufacturers of the First Industrial Revolution, in which lots of the raw materials were also gotten from their colonies. So to those people who still think China couldn't prosper further and sustain their wealth without freedom and democracy, you're totally ignorant of history and facts.

Great interview and dialogue! Rudyard Griffiths demonstrates his broad knowledge of world affairs and asks all the right and penetrating questions. Very impressed with his professionalism, unbiased and even-handed manners. Professor Zhang eloquently expounds and illustrates how and why modern China succeeds from the viewpoints of Chinese culture, social structure and political system. His calm yet persuasive discourse not only explains China's rise but also repudiates the ever-pervasive biases in western views of China. Will share this video with all my friends...
Yes, "selective" is what behind China's success today. There is no PERFECT political system. Learn from the success of others, refine yourself after you saw/learned others' failures.

It is very difficult to discuss the "Philosophy of Governing 选贤与能“ that has been associated more than two thousand years. The US has only 250 years or less, how would they understand the Chinese heritage. Even some of the young Chinese in Hong Kong would not understand this. They are just totally ignorant or 眉外 - personal freedom was placed ahead of collective well being of the people...like today's USA.

I'm from Hong Kong. We used to study Chinese history in Hong Kong. We know what is 选贤与能. Today HK has been corrupted by west evils to deroot the new generation of their Chinese heritage and culture. Footage came out that schools were teaching kids that the Japanese's invasion of China did more good than harm to China, and that the Brit started the Opium war to save Chinese people from taking opium. You go figure.
It is not about ideological “democracy” versus “authoritarian”, it is the competition between capitalism and socialism in practice.

@@EH-pe2sv You have the faintest idea about the State Capitalism and the socialism with the Chinese Characteristics. Please do some simplistic researches to find out the differences between the two. You'll know the superiorities of the systems are after generational leaderships continuing working the hardest to have a governmenting systems that working the best in the contemporary periods of the developments of the country. As the time beings, the systems should be very versatile enough to learning new effective governing concepts from anywhere, anyone with wisdoms, sharp but open minds absorbing only the best and suitables and adapting them to meet the new , changing and challenging internal and international situations. The governing systems have been so uniquely Chinese and have been working well because they've constantly being improving, evolving and expanding through the experimental results and their suitability after a period of implementations. The Chinese leaders have been reforming not just the government rules and regulations but non-stopping selves reflects, criticisms, listening to citizens's voices and demands to upgrade the selfgoverning from the styles to taking out the harmful policies and also improving institutions' or personnel abilities, skills icompetencies. Weeding out systemic corruptions and corrupted individuals have been an uphill battles since the People's Republic was in existence and even way before the declaration on the balcony but have been intensifying multiple folds for several years and the feels of the societies are significantly positive . Anyone could call or files complaints if giving the provable concret evidences or the useful and true tips, hints or correct directions for the investigators to work from by calling phone number 123 ( not sure it's correct) or on the websites. The related government officials have to give the results within an officially set universal deadlines by the central government. Quite a great percentages of the cases coming from those sources ! It's visible that most government officials behave much more disciplined and the blatantly behaviours of using taxes payers money for self benefits have been greatly reduced! The waves of closures of thousands of the high priced restaurants, golf clubs etc serving those interests are the telling signs. And another clear indication is hundreds of thousands of guilty individual government officials have been fired, tried and published each year . Among there are always a few of whom for the most extreme of the crimes like : tenths of millions USD in multiple garbage bags with wrappings intact were carrying out of these individuals' homes while during official warranted raids have been executed for the it! China as a thousands years old continuing Civilizations societies, its current, self-created governing systems' main purposes are serving its own people better oriented. They incorporating parts of their own tested , tried and truly effective and superior system of governmenting strategies through thousands of years evolving and improvements governmenting systems are taking much better care of its citizens. China is a true socialist societies and proudly calling it as it is ! That is all! It's not a fake socialism or a sate Capitalism but having significant capitalistic market machanics in its economy and having prominent amounts of state-owned enterprises in them. All countries have their state-owned enterprises, but the numbers are varies. Nodics countries having much bigger portion of its state-owned enterprises. That's why they don't have budgets problems and People's living much better, the higher living standards and less proor and homeless people. They are real Socialist countries but they don't like the name and called it some other names. Now, look at Singapore, etc. I don't understand why you seemed in faulty moods while writing the short sentence! Are you using the heavily tainted glasses for looking ( copying BBC's specially designed techniques just using them for reporting news happened in China!l) at the parts of the world? That parts happened to be the most preciously beautiful with the highest positivity, freerest, cleanest and the safest places of the current world. The fantastic and sunny homelands with the billions of highly intelligent, well cared, strong, healthy, lively and happy people are on the way to achieve their higher goals: 1. exploring furthest and the deepest oceans experiencing the wonders of the underworlds and 2. reaching the highest & the outermost stars possible. The following is just happening in VISUAL REALITY SCENARIOS! It's not real! People growing old during the long space exploration journey, The people in the Chinese research teams on their first outermost space exploration are so inspired with busy explorations processes and series of non-stopping happy new discoveries, they are not even realising that they are looking much older than at the start of the explanation. But they're certainly having fun during the the lengthy journeys . They have been slapping Chinese labels randomly on any newly discovered stars, strange objects on the ways. or naming anything with whatever the oddest and hard to manage pronouncing properly by foreign languages speakers, especially English speaking people. There are no problems pronouncing them correctly by native Chinese speakers. I'd have been happily joining the fun if I could, seeing those distorting faces in agonies while making strange noises vastly off the actual pronunciations ! Chinese are polite might not be but should have been ridiculing them mercilessly. It's only reciprocal treatments for what they have been doing to the whole world for so long for a change! The researchers are naming the stars and their major other types planets and the biggest moon types of subjects in the biggest solar systems discovered during the whole journeys with the most planets and other types of stars. They are enthusiastically labeling them with uniquely Chinese names and declaring ownerships of the livable planets and their surroundings systems of objects which had once being occupying and were expanding the sizes of at least , 7 of them by drudging some of lesser desirable planets and using 吹填 technics easily or by dragging and fusing some moons to the planets making those planets any sizes to their liking. Their ancestors managing them well some of the facilities are still intact usable as well! Their ancestors had been the most dominant and advanced Civilizations out there ever before they were moving to the earth for its less populated and cleaner airs. But others came in just over one millions years, such a short period of time like blinking of an eye in the long earth history. The earth is getting so crowded like the Chinese ancestors living out there before moving to the earth ! ! Now the Chinese is looking outwards again like their ancestors did . They are actively looking for ways to do it once more!
"Democracy" in the western standard is completely different from China! In China, democracy meant the government will do its best to look after the people but in the western world; it stays as a theory and we can see their government hardly follow the principal but are KEEN to use it as a propaganda. In their legisaltions, there are anti-humanity, anti-racism, freedom of speech laws etc. but in real life none of those can hardly be archieved if you cannot afford a lawyer. In usa for instant, George Flyod was only the latest victim by police brutality and there were too many similar cases to mention! Racism and anti-humanity over an alleged $20 faked note! The illegally arrest on what they believe to be political, terrorism hardly go to court in their Guantananmo Bay prison camp at Cuba and a lots of them were kidnapped from other countries without the knowing of their families! Ms Mengwen Zhou is just another test sample! So it is disgusting and shameful for usa to talk about democracy and freedom! What's the point of a so-called "freely elected" government which is control by the big coperations and not for the people? IT IS NOTHING BUT A FALSE DEMOCRACY WITH THE BACKGROUND OF GENECIDE OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS!

China has been a socialist nation for at least 2000 years, the thought of 孟子 has shaped this underlying government philosophy. In one of 孟子 teachings 民为贵,社稷次之,君为轻轻 has the very characteristic of socialism in it, which emphasise first on the people then the overall society and last only the government or leaders or kings. People like water, they can float the boat or sink the boat. Every Chinese leadership throughout the long history of China knows this, that's why despite many ups and downs of the Chinese as a nation throughout the long history of China, China has always prevail.
