HELLO CHRIS!!!! Good to come across another of your videos and see you again buddy. A friend passed away and left me me a couple very old hand screws. Even though they have some rusty threads, they still work but need some handles. So I was looking around on KZbin and there you were in all your glory, showing us how... haha. Anyway, hope you and the family are all doing very well !! All my best wishes that everyone has some superb holidays together!!!

Actually the most important part of this video, or any handle video you skipped right over. The importance of drilling the center hole in the handle. When , how, why is the stuff sticking out of the end of the handle that appears to be something blue? People watching video's don't care to watch the turning nearly as much as understanding the process. If the center hole is not centered, of which you basically blew right by, it doesn't matter how well one turns. The shape isn't going to happen if the hole isn't centered, the handle secure on the lathe, how this all happened, could have been explained instead of cutting apart a old plastic handle to save the threaded insert. If the video is on turning a screw driver hole, the most important part is how and when to drill the hole, Mounting the piece before and after. Parting the handle of the lathe. The one who has never turned, won't get to turn, if this isn't explained. You missed the entire point of video.

Chris Pine It is a strong irritant that becomes more severe with additional exposures. Eye and lung protection NEEDS to be used when working it. Most woods in the Dalbergia genus (the Rosewoods) require these precautions. Cocobolo is about the worst for this irritant effect.

Very nice, I prefer wood handles to plastic for many reasons. One of the biggest is is ergonomics. You can fit it to your own hand. I prefer oval type handles for screwdrivers such as Marples makes. I do wish there was a source for brass ferrules. Pronounced ( fair-rels ). I have seen a web listing for wholesale but not retail. Nice job.

@TheChrisPineWorkshop

While I have never made handles for rasps or files yes it is basically the same. Add a ferule and make the hole for the chisel to fit in. As with most things there are very good videos on that as well out there. I seem to remember one nto too long back from oru community here. Thanks for watching! Chris

I made some similar handles with Oregon White Oak and used brass plumbing pipe that I got at Home Deopt for the ferrule, 5/8" id, I believe. I used epoxy to attach it permanently. It worked well. What finish did you use for the cocobolo? I have had a hard time finding a finish that will dry properly on that species.

Hello, well, I don't have a lathe and zero skill so my question is, do you make these handles to sell or would you be willing to do that? Not a screwdriver but a handle similar to the one in this video only made to except a 1/2" ferro rod for fire starting? Thanks for your time.

hi Chris thanks for the amazing video the grain looks amazing on the screwdriver. I'm 14 and I've been building things since 11 .I'm extremely inspired by all of you amazing wood turners. I've been interested in a lathe for a while but my father won't allow me to buy one as he hasn't used one before and says it's a waste of time and money, I'm still interested in one though. Do you have any ideas I can try to convince him to allow me to invest in one ??

+Kyle Leggott Hey, kyle. I noticed you were interested in a lathe. I'm currently in the process of buying a wood turning lathe in india. The asian ones are much cheaper and are a good investment for a beginner. I don't think the freight will cost too much. Sites like alibaba and indiamart list a lot of suppliers. Make sure to look for mini bench lathes and ones for woodturning. Machining lathes (for metal) cost a packet.

what was the purpose of the copper ring at the front of the screw driver?? and was it a plumbing fitting??
@TheChrisPineWorkshop
@TheChrisPineWorkshop 9 жыл бұрын
+Warren Dixon It is called a ferrule and yes it was a copper pipe fitting (union) that I cut in half. You could just as easily use a piece of copper pipe this size for the same purpose. It serves to help prevent splitting and the like on the end of the handle with use. Thanks for watching Good question! Chris
@sigguy1361
@sigguy1361 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you don't put something on there (copper coupling is the most common) the first time you crank that tool or use it to pry something you'll split your handle or at least crack the connection point.

Yes I did. Also didn't fully understand the reason for off centering. However when making mushrooms on another video it was cool cause the wood gives the appearance of twisting or angled......but on another screw driver video a man did an off center and pointed out it keeps the screw driver from rolling.

OK went back tried to locate the exact moment you started to drill and the coloring on the video made it hard to see the bit and the fire well it was distracting but ok you used a forester bit......thanks Chris....love your finish I use a DEFT spray.

Did you wipe down the handles with mineral spirits (or the like) before applying the lacquer? I've always been under the impression that the wood's natural oils will interfere with top coats if the surface oils aren't "cleared" first, but since I've never used cocobolo myself, I can't personally verify the claim. Thoughts?
