I'd say one thing that motivates me if you're a reader of history pick a topic. Be it an era, nation/empire, conflict etc. You can jump around different authors but still have a sense of familiarity as you read one book to the next. Most recently I tackled a bunch of books dealing with the fall of the Roman Empire.
