"My feet just wanna touch the ground"? I thought it sounded like "My feet just wanna touch you now". "touch the ground" sounds more reasonable.

I could be wrong but I think its the ground, its probably just his accent.

In the old version it is definitely "my feet just wanna touch NEW ground" and i think it still is that way, just some unclear pronunciation. They switched the main vocalist as well, but I'm not sure exactly when did, so idno which versions are with which singer.

Ted Zimmermann the main singer is the same in the old and new versions. In both the singer is David Larson, he just sounds different in each version.
