There's a subtle art to including very many nuanced details in limited/simplified spaces, expressing vast beauty. Japan is best at it. Whether it's the detail in their media, design, architecture, etc, they just capture that feeling so well.

I’ve dived into a decent amount of classic Japanese cinema, primarily Kurosawa and samurai films from the 50s-70s. The period where Kurosawa, Shindo, Kobayashi, Mizoguchi, Ozu, Teshigahara, Suzuki, and MANY others were active is possibly the greatest creative period in a particular country in film history.

@@sickasianchild If you liked Parasite then watch some of the other films by Bong Joon Ho, Memories of Murder is a favourite of mine (it shares many similarities with Fincher’s Zodiac film) Also check out the films of Park Chan Wook. The Handmaiden is fantastic, and so is the Vengeance trilogy (especially Oldboy).

I think this video would have been well-served to have been split up to several videos - there are so many films being discussed that there's isn't enough time to process the various statements being made about those films. It felt like being rushed through a museum, given 30 seconds to look and think about a piece of art before moving onto the next one. Really coincidental that I have been greatly following japnese Maestros and their works for quite a while now , i must say they were quite the experimental ones during the golden age of their country ( i also believe they present the liminality and abstract matter far far better than any other countries cinema ) and that's the reason i dig into thier works plus if for nothing they are far better than Hollywood in conveying human emotion , it's great that the cinema cartographer made a video covering them ..

It has many of the greatest films from around the world, from every decade in cinema history. They particularly have a great selection of Japanese films, including almost all of Akira Kurosawa's work (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, High & Low, Stray Dogs, Ikiru and many more). He ranks among my top 3 filmmakers/artists ever. They have many of Mizoguchi's best - Ugetsu is an all time favorite (as well as Life Of Oharu, Sansho The Bailiff, Streets Of Shame, etc)... Just watched Kon Itchakawa's masterpieces The Burmese Harp and Fires On The Plain the other night and was absolutely blown away. Watched Kobayashi's Harakiri and Kwaidan last week and they're both breathtaking! Onibaba and Kuroneko were both great for Halloween.

The japanese cinema is surprising from its early days to nowadays. But I like especially the modern era (from 1955 to 1975 more or less); the bravest directors and movies comes from that period. Yasuzo Masumura, Seijun Suzuki, Masaki Kobayashi, Shohei Imamura, Yoshishige Yoshida, Toshio Masuda, Nagisa Oshima, Hiroshi Teshigahara...the quality and power of their movies is something beyond belief

Can someone help me? 30 years ago I saw a Japanese movie on Australian TV and I have never been able to find its name to watch it again, the basic plot was; A school teacher, on his vacation, takes a hiking trip into the mountains to search for a teacher friend who went missing in the same area a year earlier. He arrives at a village that was in drought as the local spring had dried up. They were so short of water that a local women uses breast milk to wash dust out of the teachers eye to his great surprise. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

His movie is very Japanese movie-style but not too much(I mean not too weird) and very modernized. so you can enjoy if you not used to Japanese culture and Japanese movies. My personal favorite is Sonatine, Kikujiro(This one is family-friendly), Kids return and Outrage.

What is certain is that in Japan gore, violent movies and dramas are far more minor than in the US. It's different from watching Americans people slasher movies as a genre and having fun. Basically most Japanese people hate this. It shows up well in actual box office or box office performance rankings. So, the censorship agency is also strict, and in this case, Mortal Kombat was also banned from release. If you have Japanese friends, you will know this better. The video above introduces it as if it were mainstream, but it is absolutely not mainstream. It's much more indie than America. In fact, an American distributor has introduced violent Asian films as mainstream, calling them Asian Extreme. The reality is completely different.

The treatment of films as an academic subject seems odd because the language used is very arty as opposed to technical. I appreciate as the video says that this list must be subjective and somewhat random, but the language of the narrator felt impenetrable to understand given the above academic tone used. For example I think it is easier to understand what the director is attempting to do with a film by taking a specific approach or other features from the film that describe it as opposed to an external general narrative as if all the films blend into one coherent whole.

I'm finding it really difficult to find good modern Japanese cinema. It seems easy to find new and original South Korean media but when I'm searching for new Japanese films all I usually find are anime and manga live-action adaptations or gore-fest shock films. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I like Takashi Miike but he can't be the only one still making new original films in the entire country. I need a guide
