Why not start building those on the turn you started building the builder who is going to be chopping? By the time your builder is made, and also including those "dead" turns he takes to move around the chop sites = you spent many many turns getting there and could have just built the thing you are chopping that much earlier in the first place.

False economy here. You need to build a builder first. Then when he's made, you need to move him to the various chop sites, burning several more "dead" turns. It's quite possible we are talking about 8 to 16 turns just waiting to get into a position to even chop. Much better to just start build the thing you planned to chop when you started the builder. There are of course exceptions, but much of the time chopping is bad.

@Ruebe812 жыл бұрын
I agree that chopping is a very powerful move. And as others already said, often times you can´t work the tile anyways so the downside can be even smaller. But the decision to chop has more layers: Say you decide to chop a forest. Yes, you go down one production on that tile but you also spent one builder charge, which you could have used to build a mine. So in the worst case you might even go down two production instead of one.
@Smilemonster19122 жыл бұрын
I really feel like this video only touched on half of the topics relevant. The cost of a builder, time to make the builder, Builder charge modifiers and whether your leaving your city without a source of production. Lastly, what u mentioned, that it is actually a minus -2 production per turn hence improving is superior after just 10 turns if the harvesting value is 30.

there is one specific case where it's very good: you want to build a wonder you would get in a few turns. For me it's rather early game vs mid/late game push decision. I used to chop forests but later on it was tough to raise production in any way. Loosing 2-3 production (forest + possible lumber mills) per tile x tiles for such scenario x bonuses counted with % count of city's production, that really adds up. Greedy guys lose twice or more. Not mentioning it's not easy to make use of balance for time & production for builder vs profit from chopping. Lumber mills instead of chopping allow me to outperform others in mid/late game. Rather recommend that. I chop forests only when I want to utilize a tile for some purpose like a district and don't want to lose production stored in a forest on that tile.

I mostly disagree. Chopping is rarely the better option. I only chop - if I want to build a district and the wood would be removed "for free" otherwise. - wood on hills - chop the wood first, build a mine second. Almost the only thing you can actually do on rainforest before you can build lumber camps in rainforest. - if I need something very urgently for specific reasons, like being under attack and in dire need of that unit, or in the process of building something that will get me over the threshold for avoiding a dark age or achieving a golden age. Most games take longer than 30 rounds, so that whole math portion could be a lot shorter. In most cases improving improves a lot in the long run - not even talking about stacking effects for things like linked farms which can give huge food outputs, or adjecency boni from lumber camps and mines.
