A great rpg is Paranormal order (Ordem Paranormal), a Brazilian rpg created by a streamer, the creator streamed his custom rpg tables on this setting even before he released a book with the system, the is even a videogame about coming in 2023. It's about an organization of paranormal investigators, fighting against creatures from "the other side", a reality of fear, nightmares and imagination, separated from our world by something called "membrane", which gets damaged by fear, death and other bad stuff. There are five entities on the other side, BLOOD: which is related to violence and strong emoticons, DEATH: related to time and potencial, ENERGY: chaos, entropy and a cyberpunk theme, KNOWLEDGE: history, KNOWLEDGE and stuff like that, FEAR: rules the other side, the most powerful entity, and really mysterious. It's normally in a modern world but can be adapted to various others settings (the creator recently made a season about paranormal aliens in the late 90's), it's about paranormal investigations, has a good combat system, and insanity mechanics from seeing all there other worldly creatures, and It's really simple and to learn (and uses kinda of d20 system, where you roll a amount of d20 equal to the ability score of that skill, chooses the highest roll and adds the modifier of skill, either 5, 10 or 15), It has three classes: COMBATENTS: which focus on fighting, ESPECIALISTS: skill monkeys, the most versatile e class, OCULTISTS: manipularem the other side to cast rituals, basicly spellcasters. Sorry for my english, i'm brazilian 👍

The best RPG I ever played was just one that my friend made up as we went based off of an RPG his friend made which he called Quest (which he designed without ever playing DND). I literally just told him what I wanted to be able to do, and he made it happen, and we balanced as we went. Best companionship of my LDS mission

@@TheClericCorner thanks Ryker. It was super fun to play without any strict rules, as I didn't even think about any limits, I just tried for it. You and I were in the same mission, so I can drop some names haha. Elder Clark played it with me after he learned it from Elder Lindgren

We were in the middle east post ww3, I was a German anti terrorist officer. The rest of my party were American Marines, navy seals, engineers and whatnot. We get ambushed by insurgents with an RPG in an urban environment. Most of my skills were like martial arts, small firearms, and a riot shield. So we start moving fast building to building dodging the RPG clearing out any enemy we can, however we come across civilian so I hesitate and then get shot in the head by a sniper a few buildings away. I have 1 hit point left. So I move back to cover and call an artillery strike on the building with the sniper. In hindsight I had no idea if there were civilians in there so yikes. I take the building with the sniper off the map and we clear the rest of the enemies out. Unfortunately my DM wanted to be a jerk and threw child soldiers at us immediately after.

I couldn't fully move away from DND, so what we ended up with at our table is what I'd call a 5e Frankenstein. Basically it's 5e as the skeleton but with the sanity rolls from CoC, magic items inspired by Pathfinder class features/mythic paths and flashback mechanics from Blades in the Dark. 😅 Looking to add more things from other TTRPGs that I find interesting. 😅

I recommend Anima Beyond Fantasy, is a dark fantasy "anime" style TTRPG with a super complete system and subsystems that allows you to do what ever you want in a wold that the supernatural things are being hidded by the church and other organization. It is very complex but fun. It's main focus is investigate not always the combat but you still got weapons and tons of magic, the magic is divided in 11 ways (book of light, book of darkness, book of creation, book of destruction, book of Air, book of water, book of fire, book of earth, book of essence, book of illusion, book of necromancy) with sub-ways (Chaos, War, Literae, Death, Musical, Nobility, Peace, Sin, Knowledge, Blood, Dreams, Time, Umbral and Void) (this ones are not in the main book they are in the Arcana Exxet). The main book is the Core Exxet. I really like this one.

@@TheClericCorner if you want to know the sistems and all the rules look for the books ended in Exxet, if you want the lore of the world Gaia, you have 2 books, Gaia Beyond the dream and Gaia Beyond the mirror those explain the old continent and the new continent, the monster manual is called "Those who walk with us" or so. In total are 7 books of Anima Beyond Fantasy, i think is a bit hard find those books in english because were created by Spanish and Japanese people.

It's somewhat frustrating that only agnostic systems are the ones that meet my expectations of perfect rpg. In the end, as they say out there. "If you want something to your liking, build it yourself." :) Ah yes, my personal recommendations. GURPS. Savage Worlds. Cortex Prime. HERO System. Cyberpunk 2020. The entire Palladium line (from fantasy to RIFTS). IronClaw. Albedo. Mythras. Shadow of the Demon Lord. In that order.

The ttrpg I homebrewed from Dungeon world, D&D, DCC, 4AD and Scarlet Heroes is D100 Dungeon. I love D100 Dungeon by MK Games from Martin Knight! I got and can't wait to play D100 Space too. Books of D100 Dungeon A Solo Adventuring Game like GM's guide The Lost Tome Extraordinary like Players handbook The Dragons Return like Monster manuel.

You included Death in Space so I’m curious if you overlooked Mork Borg or omitted intentionally. If you want to talk about a game giving D&D a run for their money, MB has skyrocketed in popularity and won several Ennie awards. Now there are multiple hacks like Cy Borg, Pirate Borg, Vast Grimm, and many smaller releases. Death in Space borrows heavily from its rules system. Also, your sci-fi coverage seems mostly on alternate history and alien worlds, but don’t forget there are a plethora of cyberpunk games. Cyberpunk Red, Cy Borg, and Beta Red to name a few. You could also look into other commonly used game engines; Fate, Powered by the Apocalypse, and Year Zero.

So mutants and masterminds where ogl, shoot, well I don’t think any of my other previous mentions where, but just in case here are some new suggestions. Don’t rest your head: is a pretty interesting game based around insomniac’s fighting living nightmare’s in a madding horror setting. cthulhuTech: Evangelion + H. P. Lovecraft + Robotech + Guyver + AKIRA + Warhammer 40,000 = this. Gobblin: Goblins from a fantasy are transported to a post apocalyptic earth, and they love it there. Red Markets: Red Markets is a roleplaying game of economic horror set in the post-zombie apocalypse United States. pokéthulhu: yeah it’s exactly what it sounds like. There you go, that should do it oh and in case anyone wondering the ones I mentioned last time are,Honey Heist, Toon, Mouse Guard, Jiangshi: Blood in the Banquet hall, and surprisingly Mazes and Minotaur’s (and it’s spin offs v&v and f&f) which are seemingly not ogl work’s.

I love ryuutama and is always happy to see it mentioned. Monsterpunk seem really interesting to me. Also i never have heard about Wildsea but i wanna try it!! This is a very extensive list with a lot of games ive never heard off and look forward to explore.

The coyote and crow dog is neat. The story is interesting, the art is cool, and the d12 system is pretty good. But the game is straight out gatekeeping and racist. There are side notes in the book that says if you IRL are not indigenous then you CAN'T play this class, or play this religion.

I'd add my favorites Lamantation of the Flame Princess Old School Essentials Mork Borg and Cy_Borg Hyperborea Dungeon Crawl Classics and Mutant Crawl Classics Basic Fantasy (Dirt cheap and totally worth it) So many good games that don't carry the D&D branding it's ridiculous, many are better and more authentic D&D games then corporate D&D is
