Calm Emotions is freaking clutch in Honour Mode. Never used it before, now I had it save my ass multiple times already. Beyond making the harpy figt trivial, a single Calm Emotions (which has a good AoE and range) removes the Gnoll's Frenzy, so that they will never get their multi-attack. Also removes rage from enemy barbarians (though that's not as important in my experience) The 2nd spell I can't believe I never used before is Enhanced Ability. I have it on my bard and Shadowheart, meaning just like that I can get advantage in every ability I need (mostly charisma), and can keep up to two active for a whole day! Yes, it requires concentration, but one spell slot is well worth suceeding important checks. Especially since the Friends cantrip is dangerous in Honour Mode, as it can aggro npcs, get you imprisoned and frop reputation. Had to restart a whole run because Friends wore off on Kagha after I saved Arabella, which immediately made her activate the Rite of Thorns and Tiefling purge. Never used Friends ever since. :P

WOW. Easily one of the best information guides to cruising through Act 1. Even the flow of progression you gave clearly has a lot of thought put into it, particularly the Myconid Colony up to the Creche part. MASSIVE thanks for the Hag tips too. I've always hated not being able to get the jump on her so I'm very delighted to know that you can still do that yourself.
@SlimXG9 ай бұрын
The hag fight is probably the most complex encounter in Act 1. For all the things I said about it, there's way more I coulda said, but the video is already long enough hahah. Thanks.
@pancakes41939 ай бұрын
@@SlimXG I try to avoid meta-gamimg on most encounters whenever possible, and I handwave that as them not seeing the enemy beforehand- like an actual inverse ambush like the Spectator. (which you also gave a GREAT tip for) However now that I think about it in retrospect, it's not actually cheesy to get the jump on Ethel. After all, it's very obvious that reaching that part of the Hag's lair is a setup for an incoming fight, and by that point, the party is already made aware that Ethel can go invisible- so it's not "metagamey" for the player to try and one up that. For the Spectator, I've yet to think of a way to essentially "excuse" the party reverse-ambushing it, so perhaps I won't follow the trick you gave even if it's doable. It's not a super hard encounter anyway.
@SlimXG9 ай бұрын
My first time playing the game, I just naturally snuck around to the bottom and into Ethel's room, because it felt like the roguish thing to do. I still ended up stumbling into her and getting surprised, since I didn't have Volo's eye yet, that first time. But I had already clicked the button to lower Mayrina, so I didn't even know about Ethel burning the cage until I saw it in a video, later. And yeah, the Spectator fight is obviously designed specifically to surprise you, so there's no way to avoid it in any "realistic" way. The trick in the video is from the mindset of, "Hey, you've done the fight the normal way before, so here's a new way to try it."
@Jules_Diplopia9 ай бұрын
Maybe in Honour mode it is harder or impossible. But I sneak around the side of the tea house. From there it is possible to sneak attack Ethel whilst she is telling Mayrina to eat up. A single lightning arrow from stealth does 150 damage and kills her midst transformation. You shoot Ethel and roast the Hag. Looting the rest of her lair is a doddle from there on.
@SwoleBenji9 ай бұрын
22:32 Man, that's an amazing tip. I remember just firing random arrows till I hit the invis on one of my playthroughs.
@5Black5Hawk8 ай бұрын
Some other tips to add: You can defeat Guts without even a fight: Tell her about the mindflayer. She'll give you a sleep potion to abduct you. Chug it on a character that isn't immune to being put to sleep (elves). You'll wake up in her cell. Refuse any attempt to break free and eventually you'll get saved by Raphaels secretary without having to lift a finger. Get Mol's ring early: Get the quest to steal the idol from Mol - helping one of the kids first will make her friendly. Grab Khagas letter from the tree in the swamp and confront her to kill her. Now the druids will stop the ritual, allowing you to steal it from hiding with a fog cloud. Only when the ritual is stopped will you be able to steal the idol without the druids slaughtering the Tieflings in response. Easiest way to kill the Underdark Druegar and save the gnomes: Bring lots of ways to push enemies to make the fights trivial. Get the boots from the gnome at the Myconoid colony. Approach the Druegar at the beach (without Glut present) and tell the you got the boots. Enter the boat with your strongest character. When approached by the Druegar trade with him to buy his loot if you want it then shove him off the boat and kill the rest. Sail back to the beach to long rest as the rest is time sensitive. Approach the rebel leader on the too of the stairs and get him talking about his plan. Then insult him until he starts a fight which will not aggro the rest of the Druegar. Next toss the seargent in the lava and finish off the rest of the Druegar. Then you can free Nere with a barrel and fight him alone. I've done this as early as level 4 on HM.

I guess this is the difference between someone who has been playing D&D since THACO vs newer players. For those of us with more than 20 years of DMing experience or playing experience, it just seems impossible to struggle on honor mode. Legit the hardest parts are the damned skill checks. I legit lost both Jaheira and Minsc because I got 10 d20s, ALL OF THEM under 4. That being said, I've turned karmic dice back on. I can't handle any more 1 in 1 million failures. Honestly, just knowing the mechanics is enough to make honor mode super easy. Some classes are clearly better than others. Some classes only require a level 1 dip. You have a rogue? That's a Rogue/Fighter until it's level 3. You have a wizard? Naw, it's a level 1 cleric / x wizard. These little mechanical staples make the early game a breeze without cheesing people onto death spots and carrying them all across the map. Do you have a problem with respecing characters every level? I don't. My archer (sometimes... very rarely) can be respeced every level. (Fighter 1), (Rogue 1 / Fighter 1), (Sword Bard 3), (Assassin 3, Fighter 1), (Ranger 5), etc. Another super important thing that I believe (I have no data on this, I simply believe it on faith since I lack evidence to support my claim), people are too attached to their main character. When I play, EVERY CHARACTER is the main character. Every little extra thing you do for your main character, I do that for the extras. Gear is always given out to whichever character it supports best. I've noticed many players treat secondary characters as left overs. Best stuff goes on main, then secondary characters get left overs. Sometimes my main character has the cheapest most worthless gear because their class just doesn't require gear the way the others do.
@itsappl3s6639 ай бұрын
Honour mode is pretty chill if you build your characters reasonably well. It's not necessary to fully min max but you can if you want. But the main thing is to know your encounters. Understanding how to clear the major encounters and making preparations for them makes honour mode, muuuuuch easier

There's a more consistent way to get Voss' Sword at the entrance of the mountain pass. A level 5 Beast Master Ranger's bear has an attack that disarms without a check (as long as it hits), so you just make the bear invisible, bless it, then pray for the 80% with advantage to hit. You'll have to fight but you get the sword far more consistently. Of course this would likely require a respec (very few people use beast master), but 200ish gold for both respecs tends to be worth it for the best sword in the game for Lae'zel.

I have a few tips which weren’t mentioned. 1. breaking the web bridge in the spider matriarch fight will make it fall and take up to 40 dmg and go prone 2. If you don’t want to fight the hag or get the hair from her you can sneak around and just use arcane lock on the staircase to the basement and she can’t leave that room making it a much easier fight without any of her abilities 3. For the spectator fight you can send any non player companion that you have down to the area without triggering any cutscenes and destroy all of the frozen drow 4. If you ever feel like you might die in a fight or want to test it out send one of your characters to camp or on the other side of the map or even at the edge of the combat so that you can leave combat to camp if things get rough. 5. USE BARRELS. any kind of flammable barrel like oil, firewine or smokepowder. they are so helpful in almost any fight and you can store them in your stronger characters and set them up near where any large health character or boss will be and then detonate it with fireball. It has saved me so many times. Any questions i am happy to answer ❤

1. This is shown in the video. I didn't go into detail because it's a very common tactic. 2. Right. I left out any tricks like that because I considered getting the buff hair to be the primary reason to fight her. But I could have mentioned the other trick methods. If I was making the video these days, I woulda. 3. Interesting. Since the spectator has a new Legendary Action in Patch 7, it's probably worth considering extra tricks like that to make the fight even easier. 4. This is another tip that I didn't include because it was already in lots of other more general Honour Mode video guides. 5. I specifically set a rule of using no barrels because, again, it's a very common (and in my opinion, boring) tactic. I mention this in the intro of the video.

This idea of selling items to vendors who you will fight soon is a revelation! I enjoy playing BG3 as a rather "realistic" role-playing game, and mostly without save-scumming. Thus I'm constantly short on gold, since I very rarely steal anything. But if the vendor has enough money to buy my items in the first place, he consequently should drop this amount of gold when defeated. So, I feel no inconsitencies or non-realistic outcomes when using your method, quite on the contrary. Thank you for this idea, allowing me to compensate for a disadvantage when playing a "realistic" style! ❤

I've just started the game and watched a whole bunch of videos. This is easily the most entertaining one so far. I can tell it would have taken you ages to put it all together and it's very smart how you've humorised your failures. Looking forward to what you produce in the near future
@SlimXG8 ай бұрын
Much appreciated. And, yes, these do take a long time to make (the Act 2 video is probably going to take longer). And yeah, an example is how many tries it can take to get a clip of, say, failing the same 55% spell cast three times in a row hahah.

Played since launch, learned about the Lesser Resto amulet next to the bear yesterday... Alternative to using command drop on the Gith patrol, You can cast Fear on almost all of them (including the dragon) and Voss will drop his weapon and run away on the dragon, AND everyone will start running away giving you more then enough time to clean up all the Gith. They are a lot easier when they can't parry because they are feared. Ideally your Fear caster walks up and gets perfect positioning for all the Gith by being invisible. The invisibility portrait ping thing is a hilarious oversight...

The first time I played the game, I had no clue the spider matriarch existed and when I stumbled upon it, i initiated the fight using my eldritch blast with knock back and sent her off the map. Didn’t even mean to kill her like that but hey it worked for my first time “fighting” her
@SlimXG9 ай бұрын
And the trick I show with the rogue slowly soloing that boss is how I did the fight on my first playthrough, mostly on accident. I was just stealthing around the cave, seeing how many of the spiders and ettercaps I could take out solo. So when I found the boss, I just decided to shoot it for fun (planning to reload), and then saw it get stuck like that, so I just kept shooting it. Did the fight "normally" on my next playthrough.

I took out Grym in honour mode by keeping Karlach from jumping to the forge. She threw down her returning pike doing tons of damage without ever risking herself. I have her spec’ed at Berzerker, tavern brawler, gloves of kushigo, ring of throwing… worked like a charm.

14:55 if you don't care about Gut's loot (I rarely do), another safe gank on her is to agree to her consultation, let her close the door, then go over to the shelf near the door to her sanctum. There's a Silver Tray that you can drag onto the floor (don't pick it up) that irritates her and makes her wander over to pocket it. By doing this several times, you can lure her over to the wooden ledge near the chasm and helpfully Shove or Throw her in. This is usually what I do as a solo character to get rid of her.

14:03 - A way to trade with Grat even after the poisoning: I found a way to continue chatting with Grat and trade with him. I tried to open the chest that was previously next to him and it gave me a prompt from the narrator going somethin like "this item is not for sale, perhaps you'd like to view their other items that ARE for sale instead."Leaving this here incase someone does a whoopsie. 14:52 - An even EASIER way to deal with Priestess Gut (SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS): If you let Gut knock you out (as long as you're not an elf like Astarion) and just don't resist being chained up in her basement and a "failsave" triggers which kills Gut for you. 15:36 - An easier Minthara kill (RIP loot tho): Convince her to attack the grove, once she moves a few feet/meters towards the wooden bridge just destroy the supports holding it in place (a 100% hitchance). 15:54 - Bonus reward for Investigating Kagha: If you lead in this quest with a druid character and complete it (whether you kill Kagha or not) you'll be presented with a unique tag on that character called "Faithwarden" and the Pale Oak staff (only obtainable this way, makes you immune to the ensnaring effect+difficult terrain of druidic vines) 21:10 - Another way to kill Ethel: If you have a void bulb and some patience, you can send her into the pit and 1shot her. This will prevent you from getting the hair boone or any loot that was on her corpse.

This video is incredible, genuinely some really clever techniques showcased for each boss and situation! This will do wonders for my honor mode run, thank you! I also like how you showcase multiple solutions to each boss (i.e. talking to Voss first or alternatively kidnapping and yeeting him lmao) so that you can still roll-play and cheese less if you'd prefer that.

Super basic yet extremely helpful tip: Cast environmental traps/hazards such as spike growth and cloud of daggers at choke points, then run away. The majority of the AI will run straight through and many of the smaller enemies will die before they ever reach you. Bigger enemies come through hurt and with no backup

Inquisitor resisted the Grease, then resisted four Trip attacks in a row; got up (at 1/4 health) and Misty Stepped away, using his legendary action and almost ending my HM run (did have an escape plan into Lathander’s open doorway). That he didn’t was because I was Level 8. There’s a reason people avoid this fight on HM.

Helpful Tip: If you are poisoning the booze at the goblin party, if you have most of your party inside and have one person doing it (I used Astarion), then if you poison the drink, run quickly inside the temple immediately after. Wait about five seconds and you will get the EXP for poisoning the drink but won't have to make any skill checks. You will only have to make the skill check if you don't run fast enough towards the door.

This is going to be very convoluted, but just bear (no pun intended) with me please: Although you *can* use Command on Kith'rak Voss, you can instead just wait until level 5 to have a beastmaster ranger summon a bear and use Honeyed Paws on him, an attack with NO saving throw associated to it. If the attack connects, the sword drops. This can be increased to nearly 100% this early through a variety of ways, most notably: - Bless (Staff of arcane bless can even give you an additional 1d4 from the arcane tower) - Bardic Inspiration (1d8) - Invisibility (Necessary to get the bear close, but you thereby attack with advantage on your roll) - Diviniation Wizard (In the event you somehow miss, you can respec an ally to diviniation wizard if you so please) - War God's Blessing (a flat +10 to an attack roll from war cleric domain, but you would need to delay pre-creche to level 6, which is nearly all act 1 content...) There are probably other buffs I'm missing, but you can easily make it so that you always get the silver sword of the astral plane (if one so pleases). Doing so WILL mean that you have to fight the githyanki patrol and miss out on using them as an early exp bridge to level 4/5, however.
@Morethanannoyed9 ай бұрын
another path to karlach is jumping across the rocks in the river right above where you find the dog. and DO make sure the goblins in the village see you before you kill them - you get xp for talking your way in. stealth your caster through the lab under the village, get past the mirror and open the back door - all the skeletons face the normal path in so you can stealth gank them from behind.
