4:55 saying de la Fuente isn’t a tactician bc he has less experience is a bad take. Tactically speaking this tournament Spain have been excellent. On Rory's '2 finals in a row take' - Jurgen Klopp came 2nd to Pep in the PL 3-4 times. In the overall history of the league, ppl will only see him as 'The only manager to stop Pep winning 6 in a row' and even then City have still defended the PL for 4 years Jurgen Klopp played Real Madrid in 2 finals and got Liverpool to 3 European finals. In the first, goalkeeping errors were costly despite Klopp's management, the 2nd he won and the third we outplayed Real and lost because of one counter attack. Klopp's transformed the way people in Liverpool believe in the team and made us a feared team in Europe but ultimately he won 1 PL and 1 UCL (ignoring the 115 charges that would give him a few more titles). In context, yes Southgate has done better but the bar's on the floor, Didier Deschamp's also got the French to 2 consecutive WC finals but the French would still want him gone because his football's boring and uninspiring nowadays. England need a winner, even if it's a foreign manager. Sarah Wiegmann won England a trophy so there can't be this narrative that 'foreign managers will sabotage the team' or whatever.

The reality in this game is that we played a low block with no runners, we didn’t pressure them for 60 minutes until he put Watkins on. Spain bossed their way to the final having to go through the likes of Croatia and Italy in the groups and then facing a rejuvenated Germany squad and the tournament favorites in France. England didn’t have a single good performance this euros and they had the easiest path to the final. I mean England were less than 5 minutes away from getting knocked out by SLOVAKIA in the round of 16.

Who's this woman. Worst takes ever. Spain manager has beeb at the international level for years youth and now senior. He's seen these players grow up and coached them for years. He's literally the Spanish Southgate and he's won it now
@ssmufc99415 ай бұрын
Absolutely stuns me how anyone credits Southgate with anything. Let's get something clear, ANY manager would have gotten to 2 Euro finals, a WC SF and QF with the England squads he's had and the huge luck in tournament brackets. ANY competent manager would have probably won at least 1 trophy.

This is just ludicrous. The decision should be taken out of his hands . He should be asked to step down. Any other big nation. Would have replaced Southgate years ago. Southgate may be a nice guy. But that doesn't win trophy. His tactics and the ability to pick the right players to play in a system are no exsistan. Everyone knows exactly what will happen if he takes England to the next world cup 😮😮

He never beat a team that is good. Netherlands is a good but have a shit manager, but outside of them, every time a good team comes, England loses. Every tournament you had a great bracket to get to the semis or Final, but had you run into a good team, you were out early. If Serbia managed to get a drow with you guys, you would not be even close to the final

I do think Southgate's time is up and for his sake i hope he goes now before fans really turn on him. Whatever you think of him, the mess he took over back in 2016 to now having reached 2 finals and a world cup semi final after years of being no where near it is really unrated. Thanks for the memories Gareth 👍

De La Feunte had mad tactics. Look at both goals. u18s and u21s hes been building this team for years. From 1st name on team sheet to 26th man on roster, they know they're job in complete cohesion. England has easy roads to final in both Euros at minimum. Other side of bracket and Southgate never reaches final.
@evanclp5145 ай бұрын
the delusion on this panel thinking that Southgate is a good manager is insane. they've reached these finals in spite of Southgate. his refusal to drop Kane and Foden hurt the team. if you swap managers with Spain, De La Fuente has England winning and Southgate has Spain getting knocked out against Germany. Southgate wouldn't even give players like Nico Williams or Lamine Yamal an opportunity to play. he has no courage to make the risky choices.

This is the first time I’ve ever listened to Maeve and thought she was talking absolute nonsense. I get that emotions are high but we lost that due to Southgate. We were set up consistently dreadfully game after game. Individuals got us through against the dross and when the level of opposition was at a good level Southgate was found out. We won’t win the World Cup or euros without a change in management. Let Southgate have an important position behind the scenes
@alexf93815 ай бұрын
Agreed. It's so disappointing seeing her make such nonsense points here. Even disrespecting the Spain manager at 4:55 and doing so based on an incorrect argument.

England gone through final because of individual moment. Not through tactics.
@bigbowss98175 ай бұрын
Terrible take from Rory and Niv, and I usually like her inputs. De La Fuente has less experience, but he makes better managerial decisions, thats a fact. Southgate obviously has good man management skills since the players are happy to fight for him. But on the flip side, he stiffles his players abilities by putting them in bad positions, so it limits their individual quality. He doesnt set patterns of play that his team can fall back on either in offense or defense, but especially in transition. And on top of that, he's also a late reactive manager, as he's slow to see momentum switches and often makes the wrong changes at the wrong times. The problem isnt that he's too defensive (although thats also an issue based on the personel at his disposal and a better manager would be able to recognize the strenghts & weaknesses of his squad), its that he's a bad manager. England will be hard press to find a worst manager at this point...
@scotthawkes745 ай бұрын
Let's keep him on, hoping he has the same ucky draw so he doesn't meet anyone decent that he is guaranteed to lose against due to not having a basic understanding of front foot football. We knew how this would end because it's how it always ends. Crazy to just do it again.
@davidtemilade83215 ай бұрын
Nieve's takes on Southgate are more emotional than logical. This is elite sport. The aim of the game is to win. Uniting the nation can be done in different ways. The BEST way to unite the nation is to just win. That's it. Truth of the matter is, we have fallen short, again. We had the best squad (in terms of depth) in this tournament and it came down to tactical nouse being the main reason we lost. Goals came merely from individual player brilliance and manager tactical plans. This is evidenced by even Nieve suggesting we try to get a Klopp or Guardiola.
@julianbrown6195 ай бұрын
Looool the teams Southgate has had the easiest pathway to the final as any INTERNATIONAL MANAGER EVER and always comes up against a team that is 50/50 on paper or they are better and we lose, stop this he's been to two finals in a row, the golden generations problem was theu couldnt beat the big teams same with Southgate

This is the reason you haven’t won anything under Southgate. Brining in Toney in the 93/94th minute while you had ZERO shots on target until a bicycle kick in the 95th minute & then crediting Southgate because Toney assisted the winner in extra time is UTTER STUPIDITY. HE DIDN’T impact the game because he wasn’t brought on earlier. SAKA SCORING A SCREAMER WASN’T Southgate’s decision. The only decision that’s he’s got right was bringing in Cole Palmer and Watkins in the semis(there too they won’t it with a once in a life time finish in the 91st minute)and final YOU PLONKER(RORY) TALK ABOUT SOUTHGTE’S DECISION CHANGING THE GANE FOR THE BETTER, WHAT ABOUT YOUR F*** ALL TEAM STARTING THE GAMES ON THE BACK FOOT. WHAT ABOUT ENGLAND CONCEDING THE FORST GOAL IN EVERY KNOCKOUT STAGE GAME?! WEREN’T THOSE SOUTHGATE’S DECISION.🧐

As much as I love what Southgate has done for England, all the things we perceive as his primary strengths could be maintained if the FA created a director's role for him to oversee the men's team culture. He has made England fertile ground for any coach after it used to be a poisoned chalice. He should remain visible behind the scenes at St George's Park to cultivate that progress, but we need an elite employee as the figurehead of the squad, coaching and tactics. The identity - or lack thereof - on the pitch is the single biggest weakness of the Southgate/Holland era. Solve that one issue and we will compete.
