Cody I don't know if you'll ever see this, but I'd like to say thank you. My life hasn't been the most cheerful experience and over time I have lost a lot of interest in things I used to care deeply about, especially science. Your videos are always incredibly informative and fun to watch, and they have both put a smile on my face while I'm feeling depressed and have revitalized my interest in science. The last clip of this video where you exclaim "Look at how big this thing is! This went to space!" just reminds me of how I thought of things when I was a kid. Your videos are helping me think like that again, so to say it one more time, thank you so much for your videos!!! I also wanted to tell you that you have a wonderful personality. You're the kind of person who I instantly want to be friends with :)

10:52 The tires were filled with nitrogen and constantly leaked throughout the mission (at specified rates that were constantly monitored). Nitrogen was a balance between weight and leakage. Also the skid marks left at touchdown smelled to me like "skunk". And no they didn't land with brakes applied, braking was applied at very specific speeds after drag chute deployment, nose gear touch down, etc. lest the tires blow or the brakes overheat. I still get misty-eyed when I unexpectedly see an orbiter, as do probably 10-20 thousand other folks lucky enough to work on that program; amazing my reaction after all these years. I can't imagine the impact of time on the Apollo team.

A diffuser is a device in which causes the velocity of the flow to decrease and the pressure to increase. In subsonic flow it is a space of increasing cross-sectional area. Also the scientists wanted women to go up first as they were lighter than men but that plan was nixed by the president.
@anothermoth9 жыл бұрын
+Cody'sLab page 48 of large.stanford.edu/courses/2011/ph240/nguyen1/docs/SSME_PRESENTATION.pdf explains that it's part of the nozzle cooling system. page 10 of ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19890015066.pdf shows a close up view. Its main function seems to be that it is the manifold where the fuel flow from the high pressure turbo pump splits to follow the various cooling paths. That it is also a diffuser means the line from the high pressure turbo pump can be narrower and the flow through the cooling passages can be slower. Without a diffuser there those properties would trade off against each other. Presumably excess flow velocity through the cooling passages would incur viscous losses from the large surface area, while a larger pipe from the high pressure turbo pump would add mass.
@anothermoth9 жыл бұрын
+Cody'sLab Also, jet engines commonly have a diffuser between the outlet of their compressors and their combustion chambers. The compressors work best when they can output gas with more velocity than the combustion chambers can cope with. so the diffuser slows the flow by recovering the kinetic energy into additional pressure. So it's unsurprising to find a diffuser on the outlet of a dynamic pump, but perhaps surprising to find it so removed from the pump.

The bumps between the white lines are road reflectors, they serve many purposes. Reflect headlights so it's ezer to stay in your lane at night, one side is usually white and the other is red, i believe, so you know if your going the wrong way. They also help to let you know if your drifting out of your lane.
@creepersider9 жыл бұрын
With The bumps on the road between the lanes I think your referring to rumble strips and they still work in snowy areas because we have them here in Nova Scotia. Canada.
@blackbirdpie2179 жыл бұрын
The highway bumps you're talking about are called Bott's dots. They are used in areas that don't generally get snow because the plow would just scrape them off the pavement. They really work well at night, as headlights light them up brightly. I have seen pocketed reflectors, placed into divots where it does snow such as in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Mile markers? Miles from what? Exits are numbered in Ca. also, but not always labeled as such. Usually GPS nav systems will mention the exit numbers. And you do see some of them labeled. You didn't mention where you are looking at the space craft.

@@jonnybabes1 I will say that I only lived in Germany for 3 years, but we spent almost every weekend going to some kind of festival castle, or other scenic sites and I never saw anyone passing us over about 120M MPH. If even that. I myself did do a bit over 120 MPH in an Alpha Romeo one time, but I was only 16 at the time so it was the fastest I had gone in a ground vehicle at that time. I don't know if there is a lower limit, but even tho there may not be a speed "limit", the Polizei can pull you over for speeding. Again I am not an expert, just relaying what I remember from many years ago.

Hey Cody, super late reply to a six year old video. Yeah in South Africa we also have the bumps between the white lines on the roads, we call them cats eyes as they reflect any light at night. With regards to the gabbro, it isn't a metamorphosed basalt, it is the intrusive form of basalt, chemically identical, however extruded at depth vs at surface. We get a lot of it in South Africa.

RE: No flash Photography: From what I learned, for certain displays that have old material they don't like flash photography because they are photosensitive. For example, I was at the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit in LA when I was visiting in July. They didn't allow any photography because back when the scrolls were first found, the people who were gathering them smoked heavily and didn't really know how to take care of the stuff which damaged a lot of it.The room was dark and they only brought out the scrolls once every few years because they were already fading and breaking down from the atmosphere and light. Maybe it's a similar situation with the suits. :)
@MrCheezeNip9 жыл бұрын
+Jyn Meyer Most high quality pigments for color degrade from light exposure. That is why most museums don't allow cameras around works of art or any exhibits. I cringe anytime I see people taking pictures in an Arts gallery.
@mitch30645 жыл бұрын
I have no absolute knowledge as to how large numbers of flash photography affect items, but I have a feeling that most things would degrade from a huge amount of high-intensity light caused by tens of thousands of museum-goers taking flash photos, no matter how well preserved they are. Unless of course the items could be put behind some sort of filter system if that is possible. Items in museums could have tens of thousands and more people looking at them, so I doubt that flash photography should be allowed to be used on ANY rare/precious items that are wanted to be available for future generations.
