+musclecar rocklover: That's called a hypothesis. If many repeat the experiment (like Cody's) and agree with the hypothesis, then it's upgraded to theory. It also matches with currently accepted theories, so it's highly plausible.

So the blank space at the end explains why this took so LOOOONG to upload. It seems the video clip of Edison's phonograph was corrupted or something... fortunately its an easy fix even using KZbin video editor so it should go away in a few hours, until then no need to watch it after 17:30. I suppose I could take the video down and add a bit of me explaining why mountains dont add much gravity and then re-upload tomorrow morning. but I was going to make another video on that topic and this video was long as is.

Farthest distance by road that I know of in the US is: 3380 miles from Bellingham, WA near the Canadian border, to Miami, FL. Getting to Bar Harbor, Maine from Bellingham is similarly far at 3225 miles. From Bar Harbor to San Diego, CA, is also similar at 3275 miles, or to Lathrop, CA (where I happen to be today) from Bar Harbor, is 3345 miles. Any of these trips are a long drive :)

This video is why I dislike grams. Grams, and of course kilograms, is a measure of mass which does not change unless you add or remove material. However, scales that are labeled in kilograms aren't measuring mass, they are measuring force, Newtons, and are calibrated to assume a specific acceleration due to gravity. So SI people, stop complaining about the US using "outdated" measuring systems and start using yours correctly. 8p (my annoyance is real, but my judgemental attitude is exaggerated.)

Yes. I assume the answer would depend on variables like mountain height and body weight. Now that I'm thinking about it I think most of the weight would be lost from water. Especially if it is a hot day.
@anton2699
@anton2699 7 жыл бұрын
So here is an interesting experiment. Weigh yourself and the tungsten block at the bottom of a high mount Everest and then at the top again. So things to consider is the amount of food you eat and drink. Very roughly for every ml of water you drink you gain 1 gram of weight and that is just the water. But when it passes through the system it would be subtracted again minus the amount that was used by the body. So for the sake of sanity lets sy you weigh yourself at the same time every morning after your first bathroom business. Another problem would of course be getting a scale that accurate to show the difference up mount Everest. Of course you can always pick a mountain you could climb in a day and try the experiment with very constrained things like no water or food intake and have somebody else fly the accurate scale up and down the mountain for you. Then you should see a difference in your body weight just on the amount of energy you wasted.

I've thought about that, but I think it's too abstract for them. Maybe if someone says that there's no gravity difference when you go up. I just asked how an altimeter works, because it can only work if air is held by gravity, it wouldn't if it's hold by a dome like they claim.

A weather balloon approach is a good idea. Cody could also go up in a hot air balloon. They can easily go up 20,000 feet but it's very cold and you need to carry oxygen. On the plus side, it would be a killer video.
@doubledarefan
@doubledarefan 7 жыл бұрын
No need to ride the balloon. Just set up a rig that will set the block on the scale at regular intervals, say, 6 times, ~4 seconds apart, every 10 minutes, while a camera is recording it the whole time (may need to set the cam on a low frame rate to save memory). When the balloon pops, a drop sensor will trigger a mechanism that will deploy a parachute.

The faster you are going around the planet the less you weight. If you go against the rotation of the planet you're technically going slower. So you weigh more. This is why you weigh more at the poles, because your speed is closer to 0

Cody, I haven't read all the comments below, so sorry if someone already pointed it out, but while flying at cruising altitudes (above what we call transition altitude, 18000 feet in U.S.), all airplanes altimeters are set to 29,92inHg (called QNE). It means that if the plane is traveling from point A to point B and is there a difference in barometric pressure between both points, even if the altimeter is reading 20000 feet all the time, the airplane height will vary according to said pressure difference. As a general rule, flying from a high pressure to a low pressure region, the airplane will fly lower than its real height. So what you found out, that the plane seemed to fly on a descending path might be true.

Also there is a weight difference of about 0.5% from weighting something on the poles to weighting something on the equator. That is due to the higher centrifugal force at the equator. Maybe that also played a small part in your measurements.

GREAT Video Cody! Certainly gives me more food for thought about my study. I had considered making note about the earths soil type and such along with barometric pressure, humidity, and (only thing I didn't hear you mention) the moons location. I didn't believe that the rocks would make such a difference. It looks like you might have done some research before doing this. Considering the levelness of the scale (as that changes the direction gravity and the mass is being applied to the load cell in the scale) fingerprints (not generally noticeable over single tests but my state certified class II weights can fail if touched by hands too often) and air pressure from the displacement of the weight, and all the other things almost no one thinks of but they do make a measurable difference. I'm going to have to take some time and note all your data and see how it lines up with what I've gathered so far and everything I find going forward. Thanks again for all the info, it will certainly play part in achieving more accurate results. Again, if you ever need anything scale related, holler at me ;) Maybe once I get more established I'll donate some precision equipment to ya.

Another factor which should be included in the data is the accuracy of a weighing instrument and it's zero point drift based on the ambient temperature.

wow! so interesting! Thank you for even managing to turn a trip into an experiment. I didn't fully get the whole getting easier/heavier based on east-west, would be great if you did some more (smaller scale?) experiments with that effect.

Cody, do you think it's not about location so much as a change in air density and high or low pressure systems? Have you ever seen those old school barometers that are just made of glass and filled with water? The air pressure will force water up the little goose neck. Maybe try an experiment with your big rusty vac chamber and a small humidifier? I think that would be a cool experiment to try.

One way to cancel out the effect of the plane accelerating would be to use 2 identical scales and masses, and essentially make a balance. One you tare with the weight on it, the other without. The scale you zeroed with the weight on it will tell you the error due to acceleration, and you subtract that from the other to get the weight of the cube at altitude.

Hey Cody. You should have used the gyro on your phone to monitor the plane's movement. You would then see the relationship between the scale's reading and the plane's movement.

The oceanic crust thing is really interesting. Somehow, I've never thought about how the Earth isn't a consistent density.

You can't move a digital scale around at all or it will not be accurate. Those scales work by having a bar with wires wrapped around it. the bar bends with weight (and temperature and vibration) and causes an electrical change that a microchip compares with the comparative values for that bar bending compared to the exertion of the weight.

Oceanic crust is less dense than the mantle, not more. That's why it floats on it. However, oceanic crust is still heavier than continental crust, and New Hampshire is going to have a thinner continental crust due to being at the coast. Also, New Hampshire is further north than Salt Lake City, and effective gravity is more at higher latitudes because of the lack of the equatorial bulge and centrifugal force of the earth.

Since the lifting surfaces of a plane are to the sides, the fuselage is sitting in the middle of two enormous flexible levers and every little flex and bend of either wing will cause the body of the plane to continuously shift up and down, sometimes imperceptibly to a human. A sensitive scale in the body of the plane would constantly register the shifting momentum of the object on the scale in addition to the force of gravity.

at cruse altitude the pilot doesn't touch the controls(unless something went wrong) often the pilot dosen't even need to land the plane its mostly handled by the autopilot and the FMS. once the plane is off the ground and after takeoff checklist is complete the airplane practically fly's itself the rest of the route is controlled by the FMS or if you are being vectored on approach or take off its a mater of changing the autopilots heading

Could you possibly find a way to spin a gyroscope in a vacuum? If you make the point of the gyroscope very small/sharp, there would be very little friction to slow it down.

The Eotvos Effect! I've been frustrating flat earthers with that gem for years! When someone thinks people in Australia would be falling off the earth if it was really round, they usually have trouble understanding the Eotvos Effect (weight difference traveling East vs West), but hey, it was worth a try :)

i am pretty sure new hampshire is more north than salt lake city. So the velocity of the object (turning around the earth) is the major reason for the deviation. The velocity there is smaller, thus the centrivugal force is less too and the object is heavier. The cube would have the lightest weight on the equator on a mountain. Im pretty sure that the density of the material under the cube has its influence too, but since the earth's crust is very thin compared to the liquid interior (density -gradient from the core to the crust almost constant), the slightly different densities in the crust shouldn't have too big on an impact on the gravity field lines. Your observation should be primarly caused by diffrent centripetal forces.
