Yeah, there's no way that thing beats out tons of other cards. They just made a list based on cards currently not banned in commander, that aren't commanders themselves, and that are overpowered in their play groups. Several being likely very close to an all encompassing list, ie sol ring, mana crypt, but the reasoning of most is just heavy playgroup bias.

Roaming Throne is certainly an honorable mention at best. It's extremely good, but the Power 9 isn't simply extremely good. The thing is we're talking about the best cards in a format. Not cards that are just really good. Cards like Rhystic Study for example don't make sense to opt out of from a power perspective. Not playing then doesn't make sense if we're talking about optimizing a deck as much as possible. When I think Power 9, I think not playing the card is a very rare exception from that perspective. There are reasons not to play these super powerful cards. Budget, intended power level, and intended gameplay. Those are the main exceptions. Imagine someone saying "I don't play Rhystic in this deck because it isn't good enough for this deck." That would be insane. If someone said "I'm not playing Rhystic in this deck because I have other options that fit what my deck does and I personally would rather not play it.", That there would make sense. With Roaming Throne there are so many reasons that it wouldn't make a list. One is simply a lack of triggered abilities in the deck. Another could be a lack of need to double up on triggered abilities available. There are few blue decks that could turn their nose up at Rhystic. There are many decks that could turn their nose up at Roaming Throne.

Recognizing how strong Sol Ring and Arcane Signet are has led to me trying to remove them from decks that don’t specifically want mana rocks. It actually makes deckbuilding a bit more fun, and same with playing a deck. Yes they are strong cards, yes being ahead is fun. But it also gets boring putting the same nonland staples in all/most of your decks. It’s also why I’ve been looking for more alternatives to Cyclonic Rift and have phased out Rhystic Study/Smothering Tithe outside of the copies I already own. Just because a card is strong doesn’t make it the right card for your deck or even playgroup.

I like how you called out three of my commenders at the end. I have an etali, Miirym, and Ratadrabik deck and roaming throne fits in all of them. That being said I feel like lotus and thoracle would definitely have made the list over roaming throne.

To me the EDH Power 9 is Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Jeweled Lotus, The One Ring, Smothering Tithe, Rhystic Study, Demonic Tutor, Dockside Extortionist and The Great Henge. All extremely powerful cards that can fit in basically any deck that can run them.

If you're gonna call the cards power 9 they should probably be shoe-ins at even the highest power level. Great Henge and Smothering Tithe are too slow to be universal includes in cEDH last I checked. Maybe Mystic Remora and Vampiric Tutor instead? Otherwise I like the list I think, and my suggestions do ruin the color balance you had going.

Not gonna lie, I don't see the point of claiming a "power 9" in a casual format, since highly powered cards are, by design, not played often in casual, cause they're too strong for casual, I guess my gripe here is using something like "power 9", when the sample is being taken specifically NOT from the most powerful decks in the format.

Even if the replacement is considered “triggered”, if it happens an “additional time”, now nothing is being created because it already happened and resolves to nothing. Still helpful in the deck with all my human ETBs, but not for Ojer Taq itself.

this is my personal list: Mana Crypt, Mox Diamond, Sol Ring, Chrome Mox, Jeweled Lotus, Deadly Rollick, Demonic Tutor, Gaea's Cradle / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, and Sudden Spoiling / Slaughter Pact obviously it depends on the power level people play at and what kind of decks they use, but yeah. a general Power 9 list for commander (taking into account both cEDH and casual): Mana Crypt, Mox Diamond, Sol Ring, Chrome Mox, Deadly Rollick / Deflecting Swat / Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain, Orcish Bowmasters, Dockside Extortionist, and Rhystic Study. those are also just my opinion but i think it covers most of the absurd stuff lol. honorable mentions: Esper Sentinel, Thassa's Oracle, Cavern of Souls, Force of Negation / Force of Will / Pact of Negation, Dark Ritual, Jeska's Will, Vampiric Tutor, Smothering Tithe, and Mystic Remora.

From my understanding, Pantlaza's "Do this only once each turn." prevents the effect from both successfully resolving and triggering. So even if you got another Pantlaza discover on the stack, either from copying somehow or from re-triggering with roaming throne, it would not discover when it resolves. I'm building a deck around them right now, and it looks like flicker, cloning (specifically cloning that bypasses legend rule, bc legend rule applies before etb), and adjacent triggered abilities (like Curator of Sun's Creation) are the only ways to discover multiple times. (Let me know if you find more, though!)

@@jamescain9464 yeah, maybe I was a bit too agressive and intentionally misunderstanding. Apologies. I still think you didn't give enough justification for the WHY of your opinion. In my mind there is no reason, when talking about the most powerful cards, to exclude some of them because they're not good in 100% of the decks you can put them into. In the end, even a Sol-Ring doesn't make it into every single decklist despite being a top-tier card. E.g. some deck that is all creatures (e.g. a "Sythis, Harvest’s Hand" enchantment deck, where sol-ring doesn't help you cast your commander and also doesn't draw you a card when you play it etc.). So that would disqualify Sol-Ring after your interpretation. Even if you don't like the example, I'm sure there is an example of a good deck, that really doesn't want sol-ring, or any other otherwise really powerful card. If you drew this hard line in the sand, probably no card would qualify because every card HAS a card type and there are always decks that say "I really don't want any cards of type X in the 99.". You could losen up that restriction but the point to which you losen it up... is arbitrarily chosen. I *DO* agree, that broken combo cards or otherwise really specific cards don't really belong into the power 9. I also would disagree with Thassa's Oracle because it's just a broken combo piece that doesn't do anything by itself. I do understand, that this is just a arbitrary. Cheers.

Sol ring wasn't that powerful when you also had Black Lotus, 5 moxes, Mishra's, Tron Lands etc. Time Twister was fantastic because you could get back your Time Walk, Ancestral, and refill your hand. Sol ring only jumped in (play) value because the other mana rocks were banned. It's still a great card, but not as good back then. I doubt it would have even been played much before the Restricted List was created.

Oracle is only a thing with one or two other cards. No one is ever just going to cast it, as a single spell. It’s a combo piece and not a power 9 card. I am not agreeing with you on, 4/5 of the cards.

Oracle makes the power 9 because 1. Its the strongest card in cEDH period and has been for years and 2. has a similar reputation to the other cards on this list in normal edh. I do think its the closest to not being power 9 not this list but when people say whats the strongest nonlegend card in commander thoracle is probably in 1/2 of those in cEDH and 1/10 in edh. There are multiple cards that make it win the game under 5 mana with it immediately pretty much

Poor green. For as much hate as it gets being the best color in casual EDH, I don't think it has a card that could even sniff this list. The most point blank busted card is probably The Great Henge, but its value is far slower than something like Rhystic Study or Smothering Tithe, and it's way harder to get online. You could go with something like Nature's Lore being the quiet hero of the color, but even it looks like a joke compared to Sol Ring/Mana Crypt/the Moxes.

Slithering tithe is only Really a problem when ppl get it out turn 2 or 3. Maybe turn 4. If tithe gets out turn 5 or later it really doesn't do all that much. Cuz ppl can pay for it at that point. Or their Hand is so empty and they already have a Lotta mana in their lands and rocks that it really doesn't mean much to give them one or 2 treasures

I really can’t agree with roaming throne. Take wizards decks for instance: there are lots of triggers, and even thou, naban, dean of interactions still doesn’t play a lot among them. Given that, it seems to me roaming throne will be quite situational… and a 4 mana card… p9 must include cEDH- and by the time you can cast a 4 mana card, opponents will most likely be wiping the board or maybe winning the game already…

What I think the Edh Power 9 is (not Cedh) Sol Ring Mana Crypt Smothering Tithe Rhystic Study Cyclonic Rift Fierce Guardianship Demonic Tutor Vampiric Tutor Dockside Extortionist Honorable Mentions would be Teferi's Protection, Farewell, FOW, Mystic Remora, The One Ring, Necropodence, Jeska's Will, and Gaea's Cradle. Also Cedh Power 9 would be all the fast mana and Thoracle basically. Just my opinion!

Jeweled Lotus is by far the strongest card in commander right now. Bakuros turn 1 I have yet to lose a game. Turn 1 Grand Arbiter Augustine game is over. Many 4 mana commanders on turn 1 game is over.

sry I cant agree with jeweled lotus not being top. People don't run it cause its expensive. If your building around your commander you should want it to be easy to cast. If your using it to play your commander too early (which is an insane statement to me on its own your deck is built around it why wouldnt you want it asap) then maybe you should just be using jeweled lotus better.

Yeah orcish bowmasters need a huge errata and rework. Dishing out damage to a player and punishing them when that player didn’t draw cards is a major feels bad from poor design. Also, this card should be RED. orcs are RED, and direct damage is RED. Flash is RED (and blue) Orcish artillery anyone? Fallen Empires Orcs anyone? Who’s designing cards at WotC? I should be! 😆 *edit: I get black has direct damage and card draw punishing, but I’m talking original thematic cards, and cards prior to the newer 2020 sets. Wotc lost all the flavor. Black makes players DISCARD, and the direct damage black does is slow and incremental over TURNS (warp artifact, cursed land, etc), or it drains life either all at once or over time (like all the newer b/w cards) also, orcs have always been chaotic and rng because they are red. Look at orcish captain = great theme and flavor. These new lotr bowmasters’ archery are so consistent its on the level of legolas!

Black is the new “my color pie is whatever i say it is”. They couldnt remove enchants and now they can, give it some years and black will get artifact removal. Recent design team is heavily biased towards black the same way the previous team was biased towards green in the krasis/nissa/once upon a time/oko/uro/omnath era

I can’t bring myself to play rhystic study and smothering tithe anymore…the value they get from just sitting there kinda invalidates the opponent’s win imo…definitely more so smothering rhystic is easier to pay for

Those are commander staples. Gaea's craddle, mana vault, fierce guardianship, among others are much more powerful than those cards. In fact no such thing as a power nine exists in commander and your definition of such should not be taken seriously.

i had so many games where even when i pay every rhystic study tax, and they draw 9+ cards, anyway, while taxing me, it's better than a fucking ancestral recall, i would love if they unban ancestral recall, ban ancestral rhystic, and let us use proxies of ancestral recall, maybe not in cEDH, but in most commander levels rhystic study is better than ancestral recall, and it absolutely be ban

I love me some doubling season, but it’s not an automatic include in every deck that can run it, unlike every card on this list. Still incredibly strong in any token/planeswalker deck, but if your deck doesn’t focus on tokens or counters, it’s dead weight.

Just because you don’t play it or agree with it doesn’t mean it should be banned for everyone on all levels. Just have a convo with your group and have a house ban list if its that big if a deal
