What a delight! We visited Adlestrop on our Jane Austen tour two years ago. We investigated the church and met a local orange tabby cat who basked in our attentions. What a lovely memory!

Thank you for this enlightening episode. The use of dramatic Dickensian phraseology when describing the beautiful medieval church painting (...while others are being dragged into hell where the fearsome figure of Satan, surrounded with his Imps, awaits them...) is well worth a watch of this video. Charles Dickens would have approved. Well done, as always!

Robin, I find it completely, rather, exquisitely interesting the ancient, fascinating history of England and of the entire UK as far as that is concerned. It is so inextricably intertwined with our’s here in the USA. Not that it is a surprise, obviously, because of our colonial past, but more-so because of the names of places and etymology! Real people remembered real places, some so obscure, no one had, or currently has any idea of the origin! So many names of all but forgotten villages, towns and communities re-invented in the USA. Some thriving even today, some who have faced similar fates to their predecessors! I submit, this is very cool!!! Love the show! Please keep them coming!
@robinshuckburgh55613 жыл бұрын
I have always been fascinated how often, when researching places here, using the borderless internet, searches produce multiple duplications of these ancient Saxon and Roman names in the US and elsewhere. The world is a smaller place than we sometimes realise. I am glad you enjoy watching us. Please do continue.

Lovely video Robin. We discovered St Nicholas church by accident when walking from Daylseford Farm a couple of months ago. What a wonderful place. Along similar lines, I’d recommend a visit to St Leonard’s in Lower Lemington (just north of Moreton). Similar ancient church in a pretty little hamlet.

Thanks Rob. Your timing is perfect. The rain has driven me inside and I am planning the next few months. I will certainly look at Lower Lemington. Thanks.

I am delighted you are enjoying the videos. This dreadful pandemic is disrupting our lives so terribly and it's great if we can make a mini contribution to your moral. I hope you get to return to Middleton Cheney soon. (It's a little outside our patch I am afraid so we won't be giving it the Explorer Treatment.)

@@robinshuckburgh5561 Thank you for your reply! We travel all around that area, and my favorite places to visit while I am with my mother are Broughton Castle and Rollright Stones. I should be returning to England towards the end of October! Thank you again for these videos, all of your efforts, and your lovely voice in your descriptions.

Yes. I remember Adlestrop- The name, because one afternoon Of heat the express-train drew up there Unwontedly. It was late June. The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat. No one left and no one came On the bare platform. What I saw Was Adlestrop-only the name And willows, willow-herb, and grass, And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry, No whit less still and lonely fair Than the high cloudlets in the sky. And for that minute a blackbird sang Close by, and round him, mistier, Farther and farther, all the birds Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. Edward Thomas ❤❤❤❤❤

I from the age of six went to the boarding school in 1959 to Adlestrop House until I was eleven. Would love to know if any one else went there as well and recalls Mrs Mooren the Head and owner of the school. Her son who would take us down to the park and we would watch him use gelinite wind blown trees for wood. Mr Beard and his wife, who read us first the Hobbit and then Lord of the Rings which turned me into a life time scholar of Tolkien. Mrs Baxter the cook and dear old Mr Barnes who introduce The Illiad to us at such a young age. The visits to Stratford on Avon to see Shakespeare plays, I recall so well. So many memories that at the time many I did not like becaused I missed the radio, TV, comics and being with my parents but now 71 years old, I have so many fond memories, too many to put on here and in so many ways improved me so much that later in life I became a teacher.
