The English and the French have been bitter rivals for hundreds of years. That is why he calls them neighbours from hell. He missed a lot including all of Africa and Lebanon. You won't be familiar with Paddington Bear who came from Peru and arrived in Paddington station in London. You will be totally unfamiliar with that bear whereas British kids will all recognize him. I imagine you may have missed half the jokes but it makes little difference. He is such a good comedian even half his material is often enough. I love watching your reactions. You both give off good vibes. By the way, the subtitles are a distraction. They get most of his words completely wrong. More Al please.

It's what might be described as ironic, that the hatred, power rivalry between the two countries or, let's say the immature, playground mentality that has persisted for years of trying out do one another, instead of make the most together in this world we share, had much to do with the problems of today in the Middle East.

There's a (joke) saying in the UK, that the only people who know how to run the country are either driving taxis, cutting hair or pulling pints - as they tend to tell you what's wrong with everything regardless of if you want to hear their opinion! - The Pub Landlord character perfectly taps into this stereotype . One of Al's big skills is interacting with the audience & improvising jokes as he does this

A documentary called 7 sisters explains how the straight lines in the middle East were formed , when oil was discovered in 1914 , the British and french colonial powers along with local tribal leaders . Santa Clause came from a part of Asia Minor which is now modern day Turkey in the 4th century. He was a Saint called Nickolas who used to deliver gifts to the poor and children, this is how the legend started. Although he could have been referring to the turkey which is traditionally eaten at Christmas in the UK. I am in the UK and am 80 yrs. I remember going on holiday with my parents when it was a tolerant country. The people were friendly and there were beautiful mountains an beaches but very hot. I pray that one day Lebanon can become beautiful again. God Bless.

You're quite right, the British did partition the area, but it was under a UN mandate. When everyone stopped shooting at each other and started shooting at the Brits, we left you to it. As much as we would like to make everyone see sense and get along with each other, we haven't the resources. All the nations involved need to fucking grow up and try to get along. Interestingly of all the channels I have seen watching this video, yours is the only one that picked up on the "to an extent" comment.

You seemed to get upset at the middle east jokes(which is valid), his joke was aimed at the british not the people of the middle east, he is being sarcastic when he said we stepped in to help and made an effort. Us brits are fully aware that the british empire messed up big portions of the world, when ever a topic like this comes up people like to remind us what an empire we had no control over, did. I appreciate you explaining it though.

Well done for enjoying the Middle East section too. It's naturally difficult to place pride and concern to the side to enjoy a joke about yourself. This is very important to British people - you must laugh at yourself (also true of Ireland, Australia and other similar countries). That's why we enjoyed the joke about Devon and Plymouth having very slow evolution and being primitive, Scotland being 'famous' for losing battle and sport, Wales' accent sounding like anger, Ireland being only basic workers for the British. Truth is important but so is humility and confidence in your identity that nobody can make you upset. You can't morally laugh at others if you can't laugh at yourself too, that's not 'fair' and that's key to British 'pride'.

We're sorry, we really are all sorry . . we weren't even alive then, but we're sorry. And we wish you well. But do prey he never chooses to closely examine and make comedy of your own heritage.

He referenced Bulgaria by mentioning Great Uncle Bulgaria who was a character in The Wombles who are fictional pointy-nosed, furry creatures created by Elisabeth Beresford and originally appearing in a series of children's novels from 1968 and later animated puppet series on UK TV. They live in burrows, where they aim to help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in creative ways. Although Wombles supposedly live in every country in the world, Beresford's stories are primarily concerned with the lives of the inhabitants of the burrow on Wimbledon Common in London, England.

Al Murrey is a very educated guy. He has a History Degree from Oxford, as well as other honourary degrees. The pub landlord character uses some of his background to be able to talk about any subject with a (pun intended) degree of confidence, but with a final twist of ironic bigotry at the end. The irony being that despite the landlord being, apparently a polymath, he completely fails to understand the validity of other nations traditions and inherent rights. You sometimes end up looking stuff up to find out exactly what he was talking about after watching him, you can easily miss a lot of nuance.

The bear is Paddington a much loved series of books and tv and the tea party with our late Queen Elisabeth. A series of books by Michael Bond which I treasure from my childhood.

The Peru thing was a reference to Paddington Bear. Don’t worry. We know we were a huge part of the issue in the Middle East. It is taught in our schools.

This was fascinating viewing. Its interesting to see how people countries perceive British humour. Though the original video of Al Murray is now quite old. Though I feel I have to explain to people not familiar with his comedy. Al is playing the character of stereotypic English conservative, nationalistic and slightly racist pub owner/ manager. The humour is pure irony. Which British comedians thrive at. It doesnt mean he really has these opinions personally. The jokes are multilayered at times, but he constantly uses a lot of very British cultural references, that only British people would generally understand. So British 'in - jokes' I guess.Though you seemed to get most. An example at 23:13, when he talks about Peru treating bears very badly, he is referring to the British children's character Paddington Bear. Which is originally from a book famous in Britain. Just thought Id mention it as you didnt seem to get that bit.

In 43 AD the Romans partitioned Britain and there were wars and massacres. In 1066AD the pre-French invaded England and partitioned it creating the England you know today, they never left, between those years kingdoms rose and fell, plus the Vikings. The Middle East isn't unique it's happened around the world time and time again, the Ottoman empire did the same thing in that area... Barbery Coast Pirates ran slave ships all the way up the European coastline across the English coastlines, and don't forget the 711-1492 Muslim caliphate that invaded the Iberian Peninsula. It took the rise of Spain to empire status to take back it's own country...
