This actually happened to Ronnie Van Zant when he was 18, and he came up with the lyrics to this song on his way home that night. Ronnie never actually wrote down any lyrics, it was all in his head.

In the Southern Rock genre of music, it's widely considered that Lynyrd Skynyrd is at the top. It just doesn't get better than this band. 100% of their songs are great.

A southern boy here. [ no real reason to state that, except that I'm braggin'. 😊 ] Sort of needless to say that I am a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. But I do need to say that I am a big fan of y'all's channel. You two sweet people are a delight to watch. You both carry yourselves in a humble way that makes listening to you very easy. Your reaction to this song is one of the best that I have come across on RVCs. You paid attention to the lyrics and reacted accordingly. It was a blast to watch. Skynyrd were legends. Ronnie Van Zant was a brilliant lyricist and singer. Tragic end to his life, as well as Steve Gaines, guitarist and his sister Cassie Gaines.

Just found you all. You are a cute couple! You've just opened the lid to one of the greatest rock bands ever. Lynyrd Skynyrd has dozens of great songs, including several which are Top 100. Incredibly talented band - Pronounced is one of the truly definitive albums ever recorded, and they are an absolute powerhouse live. Fantastic musicians on every instrument, especially the 4 different lead guitarists they were blessed with. Keep digging into them!

BTW, this actually happened to the lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt. He was in a dive bar in rural Florida and he was two young to be there at 17 yo. He was talking to a girl he just met when her crazy boyfriend saw him talking to his girl and pulled a gun on him.

I grew up on the west side of Jacksonville and lived only about 12 miles from the VanZant family. My oldest sister, who will be 79 in December bought a VW Bug from the VanZant family. Needless to say I was and still am a huge fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

And in the actual incident he told the guy he was going to take 3 steps towards the door and he'd be gone so there was no need to do anything more than was already done. His bandmates forces him to write the song right after the incident because he was clearly very shook.

Ok, so I usually stand back but after watching this I had to step out. This was such a pure reaction. I'm a 62 yr old country/southern musician. I grew up on a ranch and had nothing else to do but dream of a way out. Ended up touring for 10 years then life happened and I didn't play until 8 years ago. You two remind me of myself when I first heard this song. I was 16 and with some friends and listening to music and smoking some ganja when this song was played and we all fell about the place laughing. It’s really a Universal Experience song for most guys who accidentally done something dumb to make a guy twice their size angry. Often over a woman. 😂😂😂

A place called Jug. In the south the term jug means your pulling on a jug. Drinking moonshine or just drinking. I’m in my 50s and I can’t tell you how many times I heard he’s been pulling on the jug god bless him.
