What you have to remember is that a lot of these decent beers are brewed over here in the UK with UK ingredients. I don't care what you say, they taste different to the native brews. Staropramen for example is brewed by Molson-Coors in Burton on Trent so you can imagine there'll be corners cut in the UK. I've tasted it over here and in the Czech Republic and they taste very different. Same goes for Lowenbrau which is also brewed over here and Germany by (I think, Carlsberg). To me the two taste completely different. Fortunately, as far as I know, Pilsner Urquell and Budvar are still brewed in the Czech Republic and exported to the UK.

This is a very good point, I’d love to know if they checked where some of these are brewed before grading. Estrella from the UK is very different to how it is in Barcelona, or so I thought anyway!

Same thing over here in Australia, if you read the small print on the labels most of these brands say brewed under licence in Sydney from imported ingredients by such and such brewery. I think some of the beers benefit from being brewed here because beer doesn't travel well but some of them are not drinkable. Stella Artois in Australia tastes like arse, Stella arse. Heineken made here is delicious, it's on par or better than the import Heineken.
@deanzaZZR

The Asahi we get over here in the US is usually imported from Italy of all places. Kirin is brewed by AB in LA. They do not taste like the originals back in Japan.
@TheCraftBeerChannel
@TheCraftBeerChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for raising this. We talk this all through in our podcast, the Bubble. However, it is important to note that the breweries who contract brew put the beers through rigorous tasting tastes - including much more stringent blind taste tests - to check on the beer. So while I do agree it makes a difference where the beer is made, I do think that the beer should be within a few percentage points of the original. And the breweies would claim they are. So we should not excuse them when they aren't. This is, according to drinkers, the same beer.

Not sure Greene King qualifies as Craft Beer, it never sees a hop, having been made with hop oil and is a pale shadow of its former self (as it was before it changed in the 1980's perhaps). The rest of the list is good because they are readily and cheaply available in Iceland(the UK store not the country) and Aldi in the UK. Definitely try Adnams Dry hopped lager and Adnams Kobolo lager. (never tried the latter actually).

Would love to see the Japanese macro episode you mentioned, or even Australian macro lager. Australian macro beers are often not talked about internationally (must be hard to find) other than Fosters, which is not really considered Australian beer to Australians. On that note, here in Australia, Asahi bottles are brewed in Australia (used to be China) though the 500ml cans are brewed in Japan. I feel that they are very different beers and the Japanese brewed ones are far better. Would be worth trying to track down beers brewed from the actual source country for "region themed" episodes (or better yet, try to include both?).

Interesting that you mentioned that Asahi Super Dry is sweet, because to me that is the least sweet of the Japanese beers that I drink. Incidentally, Super Dry is now brewed in Italy and tastes different from when it was made in Japan. Also, about beer in cans, I usually like beer in glass bottles but there one (Kirin) that tastes better to me in cans. This is thankful since it's so much easier to recycle cans than bottles.

I genuinely like Heineken, interestingly they use Centennial hops for bittering instead of Saaz because of the higher alpha acid concentration. They still use Saaz for aroma but smaller quantities are required. I've made a bunch of clones and so far have not been able to tell the difference between smaller Centennial bittering additions and larger Saaz bittering additions. If youre looking to save money on big volume bittering for lagers, try this idea out!

Good to see Stiegl doing well. Austria does very good mass-produced beer. Hirter, Zipfer, Egger, and Ottakringer (to mention a few that are in every Supermarkt) are more or less as good as Stiegl and Freistädter is a fair bit better. Some of the smaller ones (Güsswerk, say) and some microbreweries (Bierkanter) are fantastic in my experience.

My beer experience was formed in being a ex British soldier. It started with Herforder, Warsteiner, Koenig pilsner and Weizen. It then went on to Keo, Bosnian pivo and Skopsko from Macedonia. My last sort of round was Molson’s Canadian, Tiger, Bintang and Anchor, with the occasional San Miguel Pale Pilsen. So if you know my beer taste, you’ll guess where I’ve been in the world😀. Great video and for the last year I’ve been trying to perfect my lager and pilsner at home with fridges and inkbird temp control. Thanks for the review.✊🏻🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I really enjoyed all the lagers available in Poland on the few occasions I visited. Once I found 'unpasteurised' Tyskie on tap in a nice bar in Krakow (that's what the person serving me called it, I couldn't read the label maybe it was actually unfiltered?), one of the nicest beers I've ever tried, right up there with trying Pilsner Urquell in Prague. Unfortunately I have never seen it since in more recent visits.

What I've noticed through trialling a bunch of Augustiner over a period of multiple evenings/mornings/middays is that their bottles are inconsistent. There is a bunch of variation from one bottle to the next. The best Augustiner is brilliant, the worst can seem really flawed. That's also the reason I prefer Tegernseer for my day to day drinking needs or if you want to go real regional zum Löwenbräu(not the Munich one but the one from Adelsdorf)...

I wouldn't have ever claimed to be a great "taster" but agree, never had a Pilsner Urquell I didn't enjoy, always my favourite of the Czech trio. For me, Something about Staropramen changed several years ago, it always smells stale and tastes a little musty out of the bottle. Moretti always seems very gently carbonated, and for me is a great beer for food, it doesn't imposeits own character on the food. Augustiner too I favour. I think you can be reasonably impressed with your tasting notes there, they seem to chime with my own views. Oddly enough, for a massive output lager, Heineken also I feel is a litle underrated - I get a modest grapefruit hit on tasting, that can be quite pleasant. Enjoyed watching this. Thanks.
