Not sure Greene King qualifies as Craft Beer, it never sees a hop, having been made with hop oil and is a pale shadow of its former self (as it was before it changed in the 1980's perhaps). The rest of the list is good because they are readily and cheaply available in Iceland(the UK store not the country) and Aldi in the UK. Definitely try Adnams Dry hopped lager and Adnams Kobolo lager. (never tried the latter actually).

What you have to remember is that a lot of these decent beers are brewed over here in the UK with UK ingredients. I don't care what you say, they taste different to the native brews. Staropramen for example is brewed by Molson-Coors in Burton on Trent so you can imagine there'll be corners cut in the UK. I've tasted it over here and in the Czech Republic and they taste very different. Same goes for Lowenbrau which is also brewed over here and Germany by (I think, Carlsberg). To me the two taste completely different. Fortunately, as far as I know, Pilsner Urquell and Budvar are still brewed in the Czech Republic and exported to the UK.

This is a very good point, I’d love to know if they checked where some of these are brewed before grading. Estrella from the UK is very different to how it is in Barcelona, or so I thought anyway!
@samshepherd262 жыл бұрын
Same thing over here in Australia, if you read the small print on the labels most of these brands say brewed under licence in Sydney from imported ingredients by such and such brewery. I think some of the beers benefit from being brewed here because beer doesn't travel well but some of them are not drinkable. Stella Artois in Australia tastes like arse, Stella arse. Heineken made here is delicious, it's on par or better than the import Heineken.

The Asahi we get over here in the US is usually imported from Italy of all places. Kirin is brewed by AB in LA. They do not taste like the originals back in Japan.
@TheCraftBeerChannel2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for raising this. We talk this all through in our podcast, the Bubble. However, it is important to note that the breweries who contract brew put the beers through rigorous tasting tastes - including much more stringent blind taste tests - to check on the beer. So while I do agree it makes a difference where the beer is made, I do think that the beer should be within a few percentage points of the original. And the breweies would claim they are. So we should not excuse them when they aren't. This is, according to drinkers, the same beer.

Would love to see the Japanese macro episode you mentioned, or even Australian macro lager. Australian macro beers are often not talked about internationally (must be hard to find) other than Fosters, which is not really considered Australian beer to Australians. On that note, here in Australia, Asahi bottles are brewed in Australia (used to be China) though the 500ml cans are brewed in Japan. Some of the smaller ones (Güsswerk, say) and some microbreweries (Bierkanter) are fantastic in my experience.

Living in Austria for a few months Stiegl was by far my favorite macrobrew, I wish I tried freistädter though

I'm a big Czech lager fan, but one thing I can say for sure. Even if you buy the same brand but brewed in a different brewery taste very different. There are so many breweries making Staropramen or Budvar or Pilsner Urquell. Always check on the packaging where it was brewed cos might get disappointed.
@Nhkg17 Жыл бұрын
Budvar or Pilsner Urquell are only made in Czech Republic. Staropramen is bad even if made in Czech republic. They even make it in more than one brewery here...
@ZiggyStarlight19602 жыл бұрын
Urquell has been my favourite since I saw Michael Jackson (the beer hunter) visit the brewery. It's on my bucket list to do the same. I don't enjoy Staropramen anymore but I suspect that's because it's brewed in the UK. Best local craft lager that I've tried is Mourne Mist. So many of them are disappointing - future video maybe?

Apologies, fair question. First, there is no perfect beer so never gonna get 10 across the board. Second, in can the beer lacks a little texture and body. Third this one wasn't perfectly fresh so the hoppy character was muted. Fourth, even though I love it, it is a little sweet.

Had an Estrella the other week so am keen to see the opinion. What I remember was; weird and candy like, not especially interesting or complex and probably only suitable super chilled on a hot day. Edit. Wow he hit it on the head with drumstick Lollies ! Estrella is weird and sweet, but sadly not in a good way! Nice to have some validation to my opinion that Heineken is just boring as sin as well.

Interesting for me, as I now live in Spain, to see the recommendations we're what I would consider the two worst lagers in Spain. Try estrella Galicia (now available in UK) and, if you find it, Alhambra (but the green label, not the red).

My beer experience was formed in being a ex British soldier. It started with Herforder, Warsteiner, Koenig pilsner and Weizen. It then went on to Keo, Bosnian pivo and Skopsko from Macedonia. My last sort of round was Molson’s Canadian, Tiger, Bintang and Anchor, with the occasional San Miguel Pale Pilsen. So if you know my beer taste, you’ll guess where I’ve been in the world😀. Great video and for the last year I’ve been trying to perfect my lager and pilsner at home with fridges and inkbird temp control. Thanks for the review.✊🏻🇬🇧🏴

I thought the Stiegl would score well..and actually when i do occasionally have one Stella is pretty good ...just has a terrible image. If i'm not drinking cask...then a i'm a big Veltins fan (at the Racketeer in london served in a chilled mug perfect) and another german pilsner Bitburger is pretty good too. Moretti is a big nothing for me...really can't bear that.

I genuinely like Heineken, interestingly they use Centennial hops for bittering instead of Saaz because of the higher alpha acid concentration. They still use Saaz for aroma but smaller quantities are required. I've made a bunch of clones and so far have not been able to tell the difference between smaller Centennial bittering additions and larger Saaz bittering additions. If youre looking to save money on big volume bittering for lagers, try this idea out!

I am so happy for you two getting a lot of views, traction and comments on this macro-series! Hopefully it will bring new people over to your amazing craft beer content! But as a podcast listener and hardcore CBCfan I am hoping you still make time for all the regular beer nerd content I LOVE😇 I have arranged a lot of beer tastings for beer noobs here in Norway, and I can honestly say that they think they want a macro lager tasting going in, but it's tasting through different styles that will change their minds, spike their interest, and eventually turn them into beer nerds!

Having lived in China for a few years, I would love to hear your opinion on Snow/Mons. It's truly one of the absolute least palatable waste of time things I've ever tried. Also, the Japanese Asahi is really a step above the Italian version. A couple of Asahi-working friends will be very happy to hear your compliments!

Was drinking a bottle of Asahi super dry when I was watching this. I had to have a good hard sniff at the bottle when you said irn bru, but yep, I can’t unsmell it now! You nailed the mouthfeel of it. Funny, I always love a pint of Budvar, but I stopped buying it (in bottles) because it was just letting me down, but I still enjoy a can of it or a pint, and I had no idea why. Now I do thanks to you! Avoid the green bottles. Would have like to have seen Grolsch in this list. That’s my go to everyday can of lager if I can get it. Just a nice, easy drinkable pilsner. Doesn’t seem that popular over here for some reason. Enjoyed the video

Hi from Georgia in the States. I like this episode too. Lol, I found myself really cheering for you pick out Urquell correctly. Knowing how much you seem to prefer IPAs I was also cheering that you would recognize the quality of the Augustiner. I do these blind test from time to time and they are really difficult. You do tend to score higher earlier, so I go back, taste again and adjust my scores if needed before revealing. Fun episode! Also, as an American, I have no idea what the hell a drumstick lollie is (a lolly pop???) Lol! I'll have to look that up. Cheers!
@TheCraftBeerChannel2 жыл бұрын
It's certainly true you tend to rate higher earlier but hoping my experience as a judge has put a curb on that! As for prefering IPA to lager, when it comes to what I drink day to day it's definitely the latter! But we know everyone's preferences and what peple want to learn about so try to be as balanced as possible.
