I'm a Jew living in Sheffield where we have a small disconnected community. We all come together for events, but we don't live in one area of the city next to each other and there's only one proper Synagogue for the Orthodox, but Reform Jews like me meet at another location which is not officially a Synagogue as we rent the room. I'm nowhere near this level of religious, but it would be a dream to live in a neighbourhood surrounded by Jewish life all the time.

I come from a muslim country and lived on a street through my childhood in between mosque, synagogue and church. Jewish community was the most charitable, fair and industrious. We always waited for the sweet bread 😂😂😂 that our friends’ mother would bake and we would eat it all sat down on the street. Same things happened during Greek Easter and Ramadan. Every religious holiday i contemplated changing my religion 😂😂😂 We can all live peacefully and take the most important ethical value from all religion.

Very interesting video - Almost a mini documentary. The West indian community had mostly the Jewish to thank for a roof over their heads when the "No Black and Irish" signs went up in London I was born in Clapton and grew up around Jews in Stamford Hill and Stoke Newington, went to school with them etc...Never had any issues. Always found the old Jewish boys very entertaining (like a funny uncle). The Canvey Island thing had a few TV programs made about it. Basically not all Jews are rich and can afford Million Pound properties in Stamford Hill so they picked Canvey as quiet/remote but within easy reach of London as a place to live. Moved away from London/Hackney after 40 + years of living there - Visited after a 15 year absence and saw the "closed community tension" . I saw adults openly moving their children away from the front gardens where they were playing when certain people walked past - how times have changed., that said you can't blame them in this day and age. It's good to hear it's one of the safer parts of London , albeit, it seems more artificial than natural.

People don't feel at home, and lack a sense of community when everyone around them barely speaks the same dialect of English as them (if they speak English at all). Thus, they are encouraged to move away, and newcomers are discouraged from moving in. Also, there's links with heterogeneous (multi-ethnic) communities and crime. Grew up around Stamford Hill. It’s a sight to behold to the uninitiated. There’s a street called “West Bank “ it’s the the most overpriced street in London & populated completely by Jewish folk. The houses there never sell. I heard rumours that’s why they favoured Stamford Hill so much to settle there, but don’t know if it’s true. I always liked Stamford Hill, kyverdale Road was the location of the final bomb to fall on London during ww2.

This was pretty good! Although much of this is not about the Chassidic community, but more about the broader “Ultra-Orthodox” / “Chareidi” / “Frum” community, and not really solely about Stamford Hill - much of the footage here is from all over London, as well as some from Manchester, as other commenters have mentioned. Something important that I feel was missed is one of the biggest advantages of Hatzolah - they’re fast. And I do mean fast. I can personally say that they’re often there before you get off the phone. The volunteers will drop anything, night or day, to attend. IIRC, the average response time is within two and a half minutes. Hatzolah of Greater London is split up into four “districts”, which are all separate organisations but which all work closely together. Shomrim London is split up into two (with another in the process of opening). I know a lot of people in this video - I’d love to know how you got some of this footage…

One consequence of King Edward having expelled the Jews was that future monarchs had to borrow money from wealthy English merchants and the landed gentry. When they couldn't pay them back, there was no option to stir up a pogrom to wipe out their creditors. Would-be absolute rulers found that they couldn't be all that absolute. As in much of the rest of Europe, a portion of the Jewish community remained but went "underground." That's why the Church, law, universities, etc developed so many public feasts involving the consumption of pork (wild boars, etc) to incommode hidden Jews.

Very pleasant to watch, well done, Kid Nerd! There are a few mistakes but since we are such weirdos and I'm sure we seem to behave like aliens I imagine it is easy to make such mistakes when documenting us. As a born and bred Stamford Hilly orthodox Jewish woman, I'd just like to clarify a few matters for those wondering (in the comments section). It is extremely rare to find anyone nowadays BORN and RAISED in SH who does not speak English. Some may have poorer reading and writing skills than expected but all can hold a normal conversation in English. We have our own accent here and some have it stronger than others, depending mostly on which schools you attended. You will find plenty people here who have very poor conversational English and this is because they are not from here. Since it is very common for our people to marry other orthodox people from abroad there is a high rate of newbies here, often from countries that do not speak English, such as Israel. This is why so many people here seem not to know English, when in fact they are foreigners who have had to learn a new language since coming to live here. Whilst SH is not exactly paradise, it is a very safe place to live, as it has a very strong community spirit and this is the reason you will see very young children walking alone in the streets. We look out for each other and help each other wherever possible. All the organisations we have, including those like Shomrim (which are not a police force, btw, they are merely a community watch!) and Hatzalah, were born out of necessity (think of people waiting too long for police to attend to a victim of crime and the perpetrator has enough time to get away because of this, or think of an older person experiencing a heart attack having to wait too long for an ambulance...) and these organisations are mostly served by volunteers so the costs are kept down, with many wealthier residents contributing largely towards them. Contraception is not at all prohibited. We tend to have large families because children are to us the most precious gift in the world and family life is our whole life! On top of that we tend to be more optimistic and don't worry so much whether or not we can afford to raise a large family as we believe that God will provide for all our children. And lastly, we choose not to "integrate" into society because we are not looking to expose our children to things like drugs, crime, porn etc, which have become unfortunately all too rampant these days. We want them (and us, of course) to lead wholesome and productive lives and the best way is for them to be insulated and attend only Jewish schools. This may sound snobbish but it is in fact the opposite of that as our independent community schools have very limited finances to work with as they are not funded by the government so it is a struggle to provide the same level of facilities as the state-funded schools, so in a sense one might say our children are missing out. But to us it is a sacrifice well worth it as it protects our children from what we consider to be poor influences and it enables us to raise happy, safe and well-behaved children.

I grew up in an Eastern European village, and I was literally shocked at my early 20s when my girlfriend (from big city flats) treated me as a weirdo as I could hold good coversations with her neighbours, as she didn't even know them or had talked to them... And it was normal for those "city people" to isolate from others and have no relations with neighbours (unless something's broken or someone has struck your car). Now this "brave new way of living" is slowly coming to our villages, which are slowly becoming suburbs' suburbs of big cities, and it is fricking awful... :(

Interesting, though I do tend to feel that racial tensions build up where there is little or no integration with other community groups and/or members; and the failure to teach English language and National Cirriculum subjects does in itself feel like a form of child abuse, as it very clearly does intend to limit the future choices open to younger people. But I can see that it's not intended as that, and I can only speak as a non-Jew in any case. I too, lived in Stamford Hill for a few months, around 1983-4.

Very interesting documentary. However, as someone who knows the community very well, I realized that you have made a number of mistakes in your coverage, similar to the mistakes that many MSM outlets make about the community. 1. The vast majority of Hasidic jews in Stamford Hill can read, write, and speak English. 2. The boys primary schools do have limited secular studies(usually 2 hours/day). 3. They don't necessarily only work within the community, they are very entrepreneurial and many run businesses that sell services predominantly to non jews.
