Dolores O’Riordan wrote “Linger” about her first kiss. As a result of the kiss - which happened in a nightclub - O’Riordan fell in love. A few weeks later, the man she kissed went up to the dance floor with another girl right in front of O’Riordan. In an interview with Gerry Ryan in 2002 O’Riordan said: “I was heartbroken! I was only 18 and it was just a kiss, you know? At that age it’s heartbreaking.” Since Dolores O’Riordan was only 18 when she wrote the song, it depicts a sense of innocent youthfulness. This youthfulness is perfectly translated into the melancholic vibes of “Linger”.

True, I never heard of this artist. My husband passed away recently and I finally was going for a short drive when this came on the radio. The leaves were changing and this time of year he loved. What a beautiful melody against the backdrop of the fall colors. I felt it was a sign from him that everything would be okay and that he was okay, wherever he is. I have this on my play list and I think of my drive everytime I hear it.

Lyrics | The Cranberries - Linger If you, if you could return Don't let it burn Don't let it fade I'm sure I'm not being rude But it's just your attitude It's tearing me apart It's ruining every day I swore, I swore I would be true And honey so did you So why were you holding her hand? Is that the way we stand? Were you lying all the time? Was it just a game to you? But I'm in so deep You know I'm such a fool for you You got me wrapped around your finger Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger? Oh, I thought the world of you I thought nothing could go wrong But I was wrong, I was wrong If you, if you could get by Trying not to lie Things wouldn't be so confused And I wouldn't feel so used But you always really knew I just want to be with you And I'm in so deep You know I'm such a fool for you You got me wrapped around your finger Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger? And I'm in so deep You know I'm such a fool for you You got me wrapped around your finger Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger? You know I'm such a fool for you You got me wrapped around your finger Do you have to let it linger? This song is still special to me. It’s meaning has evolved over time. First it fitted my experience with a former boyfriend, who actually introduced me to the Cranberries music. We broke up in 2007 but I could never shake off my feelings for him. After years apart I still expected us to meet up one day. He did too because he talked and apologized to my mum explaining he was sorry for things that went wrong. Unfortunately we never met again. He died three years ago in a horrendous car crash. Strange enough the feeling of ‘meeting him again’ still lingers whenever I go into town.

This was my favorite song on one of the first CDs I purchased as a poor teenager. The melody faded into the background as I entered adulthood. Today I watch the music video for the first time, floating on waves of nostalgia, staring at the doorstep to middle age. Farewell my youth. I grow weary of the feelings that this song so poignantly relays.

One of my finest memories was in my college years when this song came on the radio in my buddy's car on our way home the morning after a night of heavy drinking in the city. The Sun was shining, the windows were open, it was summertime, we were on the highway, and it was the best hangover ever. Something about this song and that moment really captured the spirit of that time in my life. So that's what I always remember when I hear this amazing song.

The song basically highlights the fact that when you really like or love someone, even when they hurt you, your love doesn't die immediately. Feelings can't be turned on and off like a light bulb. It takes time to heal, esp. when the heart is involved. It hurts so much when this happens because even know you know you should just let it go, you cant seem to. That is why the words "such a fool for you" makes so much sense. We become colossal idiots when we're in love.
