I like the idea of thinking of yourself as a small business with different income streams. Perception is all. It’s huge when you can say ‘I’m a writer’ and OWN it. And be worth it, as well.

I rarely listen to or watch long videos, however, your hour long video was wonderful, extremely informative and most of all, encouraging with your personal stories of starting out. I also thought Mark did a great job of interviewing you. I am amazed you do not have 10 times as many subscribers. since you did not give the link to your book on amazon in the description box, I am going to your creativepenn site and buy it now. I listen to your videos every week while I am working at home and always learn from your authors. Thanks for sharing and for encouraging the rest of us.

Really nice interview! I love hearing more details about Joanna's journey. She is such an inspiration! Especially finding out that she had to overcome the literary "snobbism' you gte via academia--I had to undo all of that as well and write the kind of books I like to read. :)

Regarding the your comments about : people wishing to buy direct from the artist. How would the current changes in the British VAT scheme affect British writers and artists that sell direct from their own web site.

I just watched the movie Crumb. He said he designed the famous cover of a Janis Joplin album and was paid $600. not bad for the 1960s but it went on auction in the 1990s and sold for several millions. He got 0! I think the starving artist cliché was invented by middle men who see artists as slaves to be exploited while they take all the gains. This is obvious with painters like Van Gogh who sold little to nothing while alive and like a mad house after death. so us keeping control is worth it. There is also a trade off between time and money that can cause income issues.

Van Gogh was a starving artist - but Picasso was a multi-millionaire. You CAN be an artist and make money, it's all about valuing yourself. Don't blame the middle-men, we all have to take control of our own careers, be responsible for ourselves.

The Creative Penn Oh Im not blaming the middle men perse. Im agreeing with you about keeping control of our work which we can do these days. Picasso must have run his career like business. :)
