Deeply and profoundly jealous. I used to live for the hunt; worked and saved and invested my entire adult life so after retirement I could hunt and pick where ever I wanted, whenever I wanted. But two things happened...a divorce left me destitute, and arthritis has me about a year from being in a wheelchair. I'm back to where I started at the age of four, picking lakers on gravel roads in rural Minnesota. The only thing missing is my dad, but I can still hear him say "Good find, Sunshine!" whenever I found a good one. The only reason he took me with was because I was "built closer to the ground" and could find them easier.

Rtsy Frtsy ....Well, I wish I could discern if you were male or female but I do think that I have enough sense to figure out that you seem like a decent human being. That said, we have both been similar victims in both body and spirit and I would like to offer you an opportunity to come to NC where I am and do a little hunting around here. Sometimes I just go to a local place that has places where one can dig in the hills or just spend time in the cool streams and find amazing things in the sand or under rocks. I generally don a swimsuit and choose the water...it's a long day in the sun and shade which costs me $8...there is an area for one to bring their picnic lunches, even portable grills next to the restrooms. I use handicapped parking so that gets me very close to everything. Most people that have gone with me, especially my daughters, get ores within an hour while I am good to go for the day! Fair warning...even though my body doesn't always cooperate, I still stay mostly because I'm stubborn. It's something I can do alone or with company which seldom is the case. I am a Christian and made the decision that when my husband left, to concentrate on raising my daughter and my faith, rather than dating. I have gotten used to having the remote all to myself so dating just isn't terribly appealing. If you are interested and think that you can get to NC (near Winston-Salem), you are welcome to stay in my spare room and I will provide food as well. It would be nice to have someone to cook for but I'm afraid steaks are not on the menu because of the budget. Pretty much anything else though...even an occasional pot roast. If you are inclined to contact me, I promise you that I am NOT crazy except for putting out invitations like this! 😊 You may find me on Facebook under my legal name, first and last,...just leave a message and I will return one. God bless...(Sharon Knickerbocker Burge)

Rattanarerg Onyaem at some point all commercial mines over time become cost prohibitive to mine. That dose the mean that the mine is played out, it simply means that the cost of continuing to try to pull the commodity ( Mineral, metal, etc) costs nearly as much if not more than it's worth on the open market. It's all about the return on the investment.

I live in Ohio, and LOVE collecting rocks of all kinds. I've been collecting rocks every since I could walk and go outside. In my part of Ohio, the only crystals I can find are different variations of quartz. Some quartz I find are full crystals, and most are bunches of crystals together to make one big rock, and some of them have tints of blue or purple. I wish I could find things like this around my house. However, my fields do have some fossilized coral in them.

This is a public operation. These gems were probably brought to the surface by machinery for people to feel like they're "mining". Ordinarily gems aren't that easy to find, especially these beautiful dark amethysts.

Being military, we were once stationed in SC. I LOVE amethysts; my favorite color & it's my birthstone. I've ALWAYS wanted to go do something like this but never had the chance nor do I even know how it works. Do you pay someone for entry? Then what, do they keep what you find or do you have to pay again according to what you find? Is there anywhere common everyday people can go hunt, find & keep their finds? Seems like no matter what someone else owns it and unless you have a fortune, you're out of luck. What about on the private land you were on, how did you get to do that? Or would you even be willing to share any info so we can do it too?

it seems to unreal that you can just walk up and pick them from the dirt, i also saw topaz mining in topaz mountain and they also just walk up and pick them from the rock. i wish i had a place like that where i live but its flat and only calcium in Denmark ( Europe ) and no gem stones in my contry

At this location they had been previously mining with a large machine then it rained on the tailings, that’s why they were sitting around so easily to be picked up. Sometimes you get these occasions like this but not always

Aly Sortwell these are great questions, but also questions that can be googled very quickly, all mines require a fee, but it depends on the mine if you pay for admission, tools, by the bucket, or weight, etc. ♡

Oh, I'm so sorry, I'm actually unsure about that mine. It may be private property but no longer advertised as mine open to the public. It could be worth finding a phone number or Google review on the mine. Sometimes they will post an update there since it's free to tell you the status! ♡ I hope you figure it out, it may involve some connections to get in there 😂
