If you have a paint mixer for your drill it works great for agitating the water as you add the laundry booster. This is one of the nicest e-tanks I've seen, you really did a nice job.

That is an excellent setup. I've used electrolysis before but you have taken it to a whole new level. I have my skillets in now. Looking foreward to getting them cleaned up and seasoned. Thanks for the tips.

congrats on the success. I use a much lower current on mine. I also didnt make my set up nearly as pretty as yours is but it works :) too much current can "cook" your electrolyte solution and can cause pitting in the metal surface. you are dealing with old iron. it has had ample opportunity to have heat stress and old rusted areas. plus if there is a sand pit that is covered over from the original casting decades or generations ago it can blow out. I generally use around 2 amps. that is because my charger doesnt drop down to 1/2 amp. That is my reasoning. I use it to clean my cast iron and old cutlery and tools also. I never expect it to happen quickly. I usually plan on a week soak and am happy if it only takes 2 days. I do take the work piece out of the water at least once a day and give it a brush down with a nylon brush and a rinse off with clear water to see progress. your sacrificial anodes will end up looking like they are wearing red wooly jackets also. I give them a scrape down once a day. But it is fun to watch the surface of the water turn into orange foam when you have a really rusty piece working. Have fun with it you are off to a great start

I use insulated 8ga. copper insulated to suspend my pans and strip my connection points. I have a loop that sticks above my wood support beam for my clamp connection so my connection is not in the solution. I only have one sacrificial steel that sticks above the solution so that connection is out as well. your set up is really, really nice.

I really like the way this electrolysis tub (e-tub) is set up. I've been restoring cast iron cookware for 8 years & was looking for ideas on setting up a larger e-tub to fully accomodate big pieces like #14 skillets, large dutch ovens, & my favorite, BSR Sportsman grills. I've already ordered a 40-gallon tub. I really like the pvc hanger frame & don't think it's "overkill". Amazing job especially considering this was your 1st. I'd be interested in knowing if you've made any modifications in the 8 years since you posted this.

Does it make a difference if the water is hot or cold ??? Great videos btw love your collection you have keep up the great work !!!

shawn asher - I don't think so. But using higher amps warms the water a bit. I would just use room temperature.

40 Amps seems to work well. My charger goes from 10 to 40 with nothing in between, so I use 40.

Question: Do people paint cast iron skillets?? Recently I bought an unmarked, heat ring (no notches) skillet (handle looks like Griswold). I used electrolysis 24hrs and that got all of the crud and built up gunk off. However, unlike any other skillet that I've done before, this skillet remained black! When I took it to the sink to scrub with brillo, my hands got all black. I put it into electrolysis tank again for another 24 hours. Same result. No crud but a very black skillet that turns fingers black when handling it. What do you think I've encountered? I haven't a clue what's going on with this strange skillet.

Does the amp rate matter? some people use 2 amps, you use 40. I have the equipment to do 24amps max. Will that be enough?
@TheCulinaryFanatic10 жыл бұрын
Corey Chilson - I think a higher amp rate cleans faster. Some would probably disagree.
@ClownWhisper10 жыл бұрын
40 amps should make a hell of a lot more outgassing than that! i do a little plating anc chem synthesis at home using maybe 4 amps total and if i turn the rig on you cant even see into the tank!i would dump a cup of naoh in there iff i were you

@TheCulinaryFanatic10 жыл бұрын
brandonlb199517 - Yes indeed!
@m.s.l.77465 жыл бұрын
Only if there's rust under the paint. I guess one could add some type of corrosive compound (acid, salt etc) to the solution to mildly eat away at the material under the edge of the paint. But it'd be doing the same everywhere exposed for the duration of the soak. Btw the reaction (in standard electrolysis setups) is done when the part is clean, therefore using extra power & anode material (built in off switch basically)

Does electrolysis remove carbon build up or just rust?
@TheCulinaryFanatic10 жыл бұрын
James Mastro - Both. It is the most complete way to clean a skillet.

@SiegeX19 жыл бұрын
The Culinary Fanatic Can you be specific on the model # for the battery charger? I've read numerous times that people couldn't get their charger to work because of automatic protections that kick in. The chargers are looking for a battery load which is much higher than the low resistance you get with electrolysis and they shut off.
@zone4garlicfarm9 жыл бұрын
+Sean Donner Most battery chargers only have the automatic feature at the lowest amperage settings for trickle charging. If you want a low amp non automatic charger the least expensive ones usually do not have the automatic feature. I use a 5 amp AC adaptor from an old boom box. Any steady DC current should work. I plan to try an old 5 volt, .35 amp cell phone charger. High amperage should work faster while low amperage reduces the risk of pitting or other damage. When I am cleaning a century old piece I want the damage to be as little as possible. I am not in a hurry.
