You have to see this in person. A video can’t do it justice. I was at a motor show at the Half Moon Bay airport in California. There was an announcer over a loudspeaker. “Ladies and gentlemen, we have a special today. The air-force has kindly had a jet come by to give us a show.” It wasn’t an F-22. I think it was an F-16. This jet comes down the runway. It’s a very short runway. This thing takes off and goes vertical. The sound was amazing.

The vertical take - off would belong to the Harrier Jump Jet. It had medium capability in it`s age in terms of overall agility and speed ( rather slow ) but managed to have a say in the British defense of the Falkland Islands after those Islands were invaded by Argentina in 1982. Where was NATO then ? A Member State of NATO`s territory being invaded by a none - Member State of NATO ? The French were selling Excocet Missiles to the Argentinians whilst the Americans were leasing us ( us Britons ) some ships. Thanks !

2:30 - Nope. There is a laundry list of airplanes that could supercruise decades before the F-22 was conceived. The earliest known instance was in 1954. The F-22 was the first MILITARY airplane designed with the capability as a distinct goal. The EE Lighting, F-104, F-16XL, Concorde, TU-144D SST, and several more were able to exceed 1 Mach in level flight without afterburner. Hell, even the F/A18-E/F and F-135 CAN do it. It’s just not an advertised feature because it wasn’t ever part of the design.
