Jakarta is a prime example of city without urban planning, just by looking at the map you can tell about 80% of the "city" is unregulated urban settlement consisted of improvised buildings.

@@amit4Biharto be honest with you, I only see Indians spreading hate wherever Pakistan is mentioned and I fail to understand how can a nation as a whole be so full of hatred when we on the other side don't do that, and secondly as much as I love India and regret the cunning decision of Partition by the brits, Pakistan does not have an "Indian or Sanskrit" heritage, guess why? Because Pakistan is not just Punjab, sure Punjab is the same across the borders and hence shares the same language, people more or less and heritage, what about the rest of the people? What about the biggest province which is Balochistan? Balochistan similarly like Punjab is shared by Pak and Iran, and the Balochis in Pak are actually the Iranian race, then we have the Kpk who are pashtuns, they share the same language and everything with the Afghans, then we have places like Gilgit where the people literally look Chinese but are Pakistani, because the border is shared with China, so how will you convince all those people that they are actually Indian, when they're not? It's more a lack of knowledge, than a lack of heritage, you will find that heritage in the places that border India, not the rest of the country, and rightfully so.

As a Jakarta resident this is quite depressing tbh because there doesn't seem to be much hope for this city, especially compared to your other videos where cities like Cairo and Lagos are on the rise and have improved significantly with a bright future ahead of them. Personally, I think Jakarta's problems is way too much that abandoning ship is the way to go. There needs to be significant investment in other cities and open up proper job opportunities there instead of them crowding in the Jabodetabek metropolitan area where most of the jobs are. Personally, I think moving the capital to Borneo is a good idea. Once the bureacrats and government offices are relocated, that would mean Jakarta can focus on being the financial capital instead of serving two functions which the landmass can't support. But yeah, despite the overall depressing state that Jakarta is in there is still a lot to be hopeful about like the MRT system, the LRT, as well as planned water treatment facilities so that people won't have to pump their water from underground. Excellent video regardless :)

It is actually very eye opening for me as I live in Jakarta and this place might only be as far as 5 to 6 miles from my neighborhood, the more horrifying is the fact that not many of us are aggressively informed about the problem. We know Jakarta is sitting below the sea level and that it is sinking a few centimetre every year, but nobody really brings the awareness and proofs that not only it's already happening, it happens fast. Our media is obsessed with politics, religions and how to combine them, when there's a literal place not far from our houses where a man can fish on the street.

Well you yourself are obsessed with life of celebrity arent you? The media you are talking about is probably just infotainment news hence what you hear is gossip. I don't even live in jakarta but i know this problem since about 7-9 years ago. Many of jakarta citizens should have known this right when the idea of moving the capital to borneo first be announced. It has nothing to do with the mainstream media be discussing other topics beside the sinking of the city. It clearly has nothing to do with religion, politic, and obsession. We have been informed about this sinking issues for years and the local govt also have done their best to solve the problem as we can see in this video. What we as the citizens must do are to cooperate and protect the environment instead of keep on complaining

As a person that born & live on Borneo for decades, yes, this part of the area is quite safe. No major disasters. The only problem is smog problem caused by farming's open burning. We do hope the change of Indonesia capital will means real development on this island, including stimulating development in neighbouring countries (Sabah, Sarawak & Brunei) - which frankly, are quite falling behind compared to other places. Despite the size of Borneo island, there isn't any real modern transit system available, this place is still the largely backwater countryplace... If you're looking for low living cost & quiet place to live, currently Borneo is a nice spot. If you looking for advance modern hightech living, eh...... there aren't really anything interesting going on around here.

I'm curious as to what makes the amsterdam canals work while not the jakarta ones since both of them are built on low lying swamps under sea level (other than improper maintenance of course) Either way i really like the way you uncover this problem. You exposed its many nuances and explained how things became the way they are and why the people haven't done anything to solve it, and the challenges faced in the process to solve it

Ehm, is that really a question? Amsterdam is not directly at the sea, it sits behind a broad patch of dunes where it also gets its water from. The water level in the city is 40 cm below sea level, and it relies on Dutch water engineering to keep it dry. The city had its origin when a dam was built across the mouth of a river, precisely because the poldering in the area had caused the land to sink. The dam prevented the river from eroding the land further, and the silt building up behind it is the ground on which the city stands. I don't see protective dunes and soil-retaining dams in Jakarta. Perhaps the Dutch cheated a bit when they dug the canals and left away the rest of the system.

@@kimyeonahchannel for a start, Indonesia is along the equator, just slightly south. Equatorial tropics receives heavy rainfall throughout the year. Temperate countries much further north or south like Netherlands do not receive as much rainfall. Indonesia has much coastline and mountains, cold air from the highlands and moisture-rich warm sea breeze meet constantly to produce rain. Same for places like Brazil. Indonesia experiences monsoon seasons as well. Discharging rainfall directly into the sea via straight concrete canals is the perfect recipe for disaster, where groundwater is not able to recover its critical levels. The huge population and unregulated groundwater extraction increases the problem multiple folds. The vacuum hence caused the ground to sink constantly, with increasing concrete high-rise buildings adding to the pressure.

The current governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, does not want to take serious action on the water problem in Jakarta. Whether it's clean water, waste water, groundwater, sewers, rivers, lakes and so on. Five years as governor, he built sidewalks and pedestrian bridges. Maybe it's because the current type of governor is a dandy type, so what's taken care of is Jakarta decorations, according to his personal interests.

Politically this is very, very hard. their rather low level of education makes them very easy to move politically because of the enormous freedom of speech in this country. so it's not easy whoever the leader is... even a putin will surely fail to lead Indonesia. and even if ordered by the military in a very hard way though it will surely fail because hardworking Indonesians never give up even in gun wars. 350 years war with Netherland and 3.5 with japanese indonesian people consistent a war... The problem with water access is way more than how much pipe we should connect. I am growing up in Jakarta pretty much all my life, and for the most part using well pump. I just switched to government water pipe 3 years ago and let's say that only create more problem for me. The water comes from a very polluted river, and need to be treated heavily with chemical to the point that tap water tasted closer to swimming pool than drinkable, thus more investment on filtration system if you plan to not buy gallons of water for daily consumption. Then the flow of water is so weak and not reliable, that for 10 hours a day, I don't have running water access since I live in second floor. I mean, come on, second-biggest city in the world and yet I can't poop peacefully on my own toilet at midnight. Also, there is this problem with corruption culture that is killing the country as a whole, siphoning fund from such project that could help Jakarta. Like, rather than putting investment for a long term, government officials use the cheapest and shittiest concrete so that they could play with margin and so it will be broken every year. Broken infrastructure annually means funds allocation every year, more budget to play with.

But the problem is that someone will get really big money from relocating. Indonesia's politicians are not allowed to find the better alternative for the people. The Indonesian politicians are prisoners of their international overlords, and guess what... They don't care about the people's well being.

The average price of a house in Jakarta is around $70-100 thousands, while the minimum wage is only $320 as per 2023 some even paid less. Jakarta city planning constantly changed every 5 years with the new governor. If the current governor had a good plan and try to get the job done but before the project was finished the new one will came up with new plan to satisfy voters as promised in the campaign. Then the yet to be finished project will be abandoned and stopped and started all over again with their's. So everyone trying to be a smartass while in reality everyone trying to benefit themselves by looking for any crack, slit, or gap for corruption. So it's a catastrophe waiting to happen anytime soon.
