The reason why some people are not supporting Jeff anymore is simple: it has been revealed that he has an extremely unlikeable personality lor. I don’t think it’s so much that people think Jeff doesn’t deserve to be famous because of what he did in his personal life in the past. It’s not “Jeff cannot be famous anymore”/ “Jeff cannot be a busker anymore” but rather “Eeee he’s like that one ah, so insecure, rude, possessive & abusive. So disgusting, I don’t like him anymore/ I don’t condone this kind of behaviour so I cannot root for him anymore”. And yes, performers should be first & foremost judged by their performance but a person is not just his craft mah. Things like appearance & personality do play a part in how likeable a person is. I don’t think Jeff should be cancelled. However, I do think he should be called out for his bad behaviour towards his audience & fans & his abusive ways towards his ex. And it’s totally understandable why some will stop supporting him as a result.

On the topic of “deserved fame” - think of it as running a business. Ultimately, he’s doing whatever he does to earn a profit / living. Similarly to how you wouldn’t support a business which values doesn’t align with yours (eg if a brand is homophobic and you boycott them), you wouldn’t want to support a musician who’s a terrible person (or have shitty morals). That’s how I view it, might not be representative, but I suppose that’s the rationale behind the people who drop him after finding out who he is as a person :)
@waciao39672 жыл бұрын
When you become famous and well liked, you have the power to influence and control a big crowd of people or world. This can greatly affect the moral society. If this person has good attitude and characteristics, the examples he or she portrays will promote virtues, hence if someone portrays bad attitudes and behaviours and still allow to influence, then the society will be in danger! Media is powerful, but must use it with care! Be good and have peace!

This is not just moral leh i think. Emotional abusive leh. Think about the ex that have to live with it. Emotional abusive is also consider domestic abuse. Personally i dont want to support someone like this. Also china will cancel him even harder. They have very strict moral standard for celebrity.

I think in Ivan Lim's case, he was running for something that was literally based off his popularity and abilities so his past shit shows his popularity in a way? In Jeff's case of course it shouldn't affect his career but things like the unfollow thing makes people feel uncomfortable to support him. Also people have the right to judge for themselves after all, so I think it's fair to share the things about him so people can make better informed decisions.

The hypocrisy in the parody vs bully is very prevalent. Thanks for bringing that up.
@nixon26522 жыл бұрын
Honestly, he could have ignored and continue his life as he did all along but instead of openly facing everyone, he choose to cancel himself which clearly show he is an unchanged person. If a person has turnover a new leaf, no longer the same person as he was previously, he would be able to stand out openly to admit his past and prove he has changed. But personally, I doubt he has changed thus he is hiding. Aside to that, being a public figure means you are like a role model to some. His personal life is no longer his personal life. This is a trade off to be famous, to be a public figure. Also, he might become a real popular singer in Singapore someday but what kind of image is he projecting to everyone? I believe that is one of the key consideration as well.

I relate with Jon C's point about the "bully". At the end of the day we have to reflect if this "cancel?" Culture what we want to promote. If we do, then be consistent and don't be promoting mental wellness/anti bullying the following week.
@gypsyqzy2 жыл бұрын
Mistakes made in our former relationships regardless of how common they are among people does not make them okay and we shouldn’t be making statements like “ahya who don’t make those mistakes?”. It’s dangerous to normalise something that has potential detrimental effects on the victim’s mental health. Just my two cents worth

Regarding should personal life affect the professional live, I feel it depends on the job itself. Sometime, personal life has a lot of influence in some occupation, especially if it is link to popularity. Singers don't just earn from singing, they also earn through sponsorship etc. At the end of the day, it is up to the "consumers" to decide on the criteria of "products" they want to support. Some just require singers to sing well, some require more than that. No matter what, people should just respect different consumers' criteria. I have to agree on JP's view on whether the content is bully or just a joke.

Why do famous people need to be good people? Cause they have a following, and by such, there is some form of societal pressure that they should uphold good morals. Children follow who/what they see online. thus u see many canceled "influencers" nowadays. It's like if eg. lionel messi was super arrogant, always talks down to his opponents. do you think he will be a famous as he is? i dont think he will get as much opportunities career wise.

When you like/stan a celebrity, actor, singer, artists etc, you do it because you like his/her talent/skills and looks. However, if you do something bad or not in line with what they believe in, they will just not support you any longer. I believe this will be similar to other celebrities, like show luo or wang lee hong, until proven otherwise

Not a fan or non-fan of Jeff, so am speaking from an objective pov.. I'm sure there are reasons behind his behaviours that seems toxic..could be his fam background or trauma incidents that are unresolved. I feel like with the recent incident and backlash, it may help him gain more awareness about his own behaviours.. hope he will seek professional help to process any emotions or past incidents that have made him have such insecure behaviours.

I can understand people riding on the craze but I think people with bigger following have more social responsibility. If a random person is nasty, the reach might not be there. Not saying it is okay since it might also blow up and it might bite back. I think influencer should try to think if the same thing happens to them and other ppl did the same, can they accept. If yes, then go ahead.

I think you guys missed the point. It's not whether he is talented; bad personality etc or not . Rather it all depends on the job u are in. If u are a talented stock broker; always making profits for your clients and u have a shiity personality; people do not care. Why? Cause you are making money for them. U can have the worst reputation in the industry but the best results and people will still come to you. But when it comes to entertainment, its the masses who are doing the paying. Buying your music, paying for concerts, paying for live band pubs, etc. You do not provide anything tangible to your clients. It's like the service industry. Would you go back to a restaurant with bad (or worse "rude") service? In any industry where you put urself in the limelight, you become your own brand. Any bad publicity is a hit on your portfolio. It's the price of fame all celebrities have to pay be it sports personalities, actors or politicians. Yes, everyone has a past, but if people can see remorse and change, some people would forgive and forget. But when people still see the arrogance in you and no signs of remose, then it doesn't matter how talented you are because unfortunately the industry you are in is ultimately dependent on people's opinion.

I don't think Jeff is intentionally a shitty person. He probably has/had some issues and is/was very insecure. My over protective mother was also similar in that sense. Used to give me many missed calls when I went home late, expect me to inform her whenever I go, I'm also always in the wrong and have a hard time to apologise her. She also threaten suicide sometimes. Yes she was toxic, but I was also a disobedient teenager who was probably pushing it with an over protective parent. So I don't think the gf is entirely innocent either and probably knew how to push his buttons. In fact Jeff wouldn't have done those things if he didn't really care for her. As I grew up my relationship improved ultimately with my mother after I told her how her behaviour really hurts me. To date, we have a really loving and understanding relationship so I believe he can change as well. Regarding how he always wants his fans to listen to him while he's singing, I heard he used to be a school teacher. It could be that he is treating his fans the way he treats his students 😂 by asking them to quiet down and listen. I didn't know Jeff before this incident and never listened to his singing before also. So I'm definitely not a fan defending him but I don't think he deserves all this cancelling as everyone deserves a chance and he did not deserve to have his private life being shared like that. The ex gf definitely has some issues sharing her side of the story just because he's famous now.

I don't think I've seen a comedian from the united states like Kevin Hart or Bill Burr single out someone and roast them on social media for the sake of following a "trend" or comedy. And I think it's damn toxic that Singaporeans celebrate cancel culture under the guise that they are trying to achieve some sort of social justice, when it's probably just a way for them to release some of their jealousy. Imo everyone has skeletons in their closet and is it really right us to celebrate a situation like this?

In my view, the girlfriend had a very evil agenda and is out to ruin his life. Their relationship ended eons ago and Jeff even got married. People makes mistake. This cancel culture is getting way overboard. Unforgiving society.

@@bigmattwheel no doubt he has a shady character, but to what extent do you want to go to cancel someone? Would you go and cancel a blue collar worker for shady character?
