i work as graphic designer for several years, and my2cents is .. the creative people in a corporate world is usually not the boss. so when they suggest something outside the box, the boss doesnt understand and wont implement it. so there goes creativity, dead before conception .

i agree with the american lady that singaporeans don't really think out of the box. why? because our society and education doesn't encourage us to think out of the box. it's ingrained in our mind to stay in the box. When someone goes out of the box, they are being reprimanded and punish for going out of the box.

I think creativity comes from varied experiences - not necessarily struggle. tbh there’s lots being put out by sg creatives. but they always end exploring the same narratives & cultural icons, which makes it mundane (e.g how many times can we talk about sg difficult school life/multiculturalism/work culture etc in a truly fresh way?) its just difficult to have that variety (e.g landscape, life paths etc) to even EXPERIENCE, let alone explore through art, in sg resulting in the same stuff being rehashed

Yes, the longer you stay in the country the more you will fit into the societal norm. So I grew up in Australia. It was all work life balance, drop the work even though haven't finished and "do it tomorrow mate". So I moved to SG and I was so happy because finally I found a place where it aligned to my work ethic. Like Jon I wasn't able to sit there and do nothing (like everyone else). I found that life boring. So SG was perfect for me. Though I won't go shopping every night I loved the "option" of buying food late if I needed to, or buying shoes which have holes rather than having to tahan till Saturday. Yeah, I am glad I moved to SG. Nearly half my life now. Majulah!

On creativity, I did an interview with a Singaporean company once. In the interview I was asked what are some of my strengths to which I replied “if I have the space to be creative to solve problems”. The interviewer immediately jumped and reacted “We always need things done yesterday. You say creative. I actually want to know can you work fast ah? Like can you handle pressure? You can work fast or not?”. I replied to say “creativity and efficiency is not mutually exclusive” to which the interviewer disagreed. She was quick to equate creativity = slow. And the worst part was she was extremely righteous about it😅 That was my first impression of Singapore work culture. Mind you this was a fairly huge corporate company
@jamesl2590
@jamesl2590 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what kind of job you are applying for. The interviewer seems kinda biased, but still have some validity in her opinions. Just think of this. Jobs can be broadly categorized as (1) "Operations" or (2) "Development" work. (1) Operations involves repetitive workflows and following a set of standards, which most of time leave little time for creative deviation. Such jobs demand time-efficiency / minimise wastage by stipulating a standard set of rules for the staff to follow. (2) "Development" work, on the other hand, requires the staff to creatively forge path towards the unknown. And people have inclination towards either of it. Of course, there is always shades of (1) in (2), vice versa, in everyone and job type. Assuming if you are an employer wanting to hire someone for an time-sensitive operations role with an already established set of SOPs, would you prefer a candidate's greatest quality to be efficiency or creativity? Also, note that hiring a candidate who over-emphasized on his/her interest for creativity also pose the risk that the candidate may get bored over time, and leave the job. The employer needs certainty for an operation headcount, and can't afford high turnover for an already time-sensitive operations. But if you are applying for a "Development"/creative position, then it would be absolutely nuts for the employer to discount the importance of creatively and mention to you the above. I am in an "Development" and I can tell you that nothing is worse than having staff with strong "Operations" type of mindset working in "Development". They destroy the value of creativity, by cutting "creative" corners to deliver half-baked "creative" solution, which "Development" peeps have to resolve for them at the end. Of course, there will always be outliers or a few outstanding individuals like yourself who are good at both arenas. But what's the probability of getting a candidate or assessing one from just a few interview? The employer can't risk it for a time-sensitive ops role. To assume / para-phrase what your interviewer mean: This is a boring and repetitive job. Are you sure you want to do it?

I also work in an MNC and used to be in a position that had the chance to improve processes. Usually it is always a struggle when rolling out changes between how much it will help and how long will it take to implement. It really takes management level's faith and blessing for things like that to be done, and not a lot of people can accept that. It is not wrong that if there's no problem, don't have to solve anything. Most of the time it is not that there is no problems, it is that it may be restrictive or there is an impending problem that may happen with time.

The conversation about whether there needs to be a good idea for it to succeed, I'm reminded of the Codex Alera series where the author was debating on an online forum with another user whether it was more important to have a mediocre idea and good execution or good idea with mediocre execution. The author, whose stance is that execution is more important than idea, challenged the user to give him 2 mediocre idea and he will write a good story out of it. He was given the prompts Pokemon and the Lost Roman Legion, and he wrote the Codex Alera series, which became one of the bestselling series when it came out.

On creativity. Its ironic how a fast paced society like Singapore, likes to place so much emphasis on progress and productivity. So much so that it seems like the same emphasis on progress/productivity is exactly what hinders the progress that we so want so much of. Productivity as in being able to produce as much quantity as possible where the quality just needs to be sub par or slightly above average to be acceptable And we all know quality and creativity takes time. And most times, developers, homeowners, wtv kind of clients simply just dont have or is willing to give, bc they dont wanna "lose out" in their life's progression. And because of our lack in natural resource/manual labour, things that takes more time to build simply isn't gonna make the cut. Or just requires a lot of $$$ and becomes a trade off thats not so worth it anymore In the end, like what Denise said, I also I think when you're able to fully understand a problem well and even the restrictions, then find the most suitable solution to the said problem is what makes us creative! And this takes practice to be able to execute in a timely manner

Singaporeans are actually creative until practical and realistic needs come into play. It’s the same as having hobbies, everyone enjoys them until they realise they can’t sustain on them. I don’t think porn targetted for paedophiles/rapists is the way to go. They already have a problem in their brain, and once they get bored of porn and want something more, isn’t their problem gonna be more worse? CGI or real people, porn is all imaginary and in your head. Once your urge can no longer be fulfilled by whatever is on the screen, you’d look for it in reality and it’s not there and you end up hurting people and yourself.

I don’t think that TikTok is even considered offensive, I mean if we can’t take criticism how can we grow? I believe it has something to do with boomers and internet faux news, especially with the current geopolitics. Cause just look at the Malaysian PR, who did a video on SG in KZbin/TikTok, 2019. Using the exact same key words, “the Best” and “the Worst” place to live in. Did he got any backlash from viewers back than? No, in fact it propel his fame as an influencer further or perhaps SG has become more “conservative” the last 3yrs? 🤷‍♂️
