You guys may have missed out the actual intention of quiet quitting, which is supposed to refer to the behaviour of just doing bare minimum after realising the hard work was not recognised/ no returns have been observed. Hence ppl started to quiet quit. Not just because they want to slack and wait for retirement.

IMO there is another point to contend, that is manufactured urgency. As a typical office worker, I think being expected to remain contactable outside of working hours is frankly straight up unreasonable (idk maybe work schedules in the content generation industry is different). How disastrous are the consequences going to be if i submit this report 1 day late (also bearing in mind sometimes even the initial deadline given is already ridiculous)? Sometimes, it may just be that i'm getting rushed by my manager who's getting rushed by the director who's getting rushed by the department head who just wants to look like they are good at their job (regardless of whether they actually are; i mean good for you if you want to work 18 hours a day but you're crazy if you think people should follow you).

The saddest thing is when you give more than you are required, do more, come out with new initiatives, etc, but then there is no promotion or good appraisal that help you grow in the company. There are times where your manager, also don't fight for your promotion. So i think thats where quiet quitting comes in.

In my opinion, the younger generations know what they want, and they do not want to conform to the society. Since our grandfather's time, the society tells us to work hard, climb the corporate ladder and earn tons of money = success. If not, you are wasting your life and will not be respected in the society. Is success and respect is what everyone is looking for in their life? There are definitely a part of the society are driven to be successful in terms of earning more money, respect, rank, etc but there are also a part of society where what they want in their life is to be successful in their own way (happiness, contentment, comfort, etc). But the latter has always been seen as incompetent, which is definitely not the case. We should not celebrate "quiet quitting" but we should normalise "do whatever that you want in your life, and stop judging each other"
@Banayaga

Also, younger generations don't see the rewards coming in (money, respect, rank) and it may not be worthwhile to them to work in the same job for the next 10 years since you can job hop to get that pay raise faster.

What's wrong with just doing the bare minimum for your work? If the person understands what his job description entails and is disinterested in promotion and career progression, then he has all the rights to stick to what his contract requires him to do for the fixed salary that he gets. To me, that's work-life balance.

What puzzles me is why do companies rather pay more to hire someone new than to retain employees by correcting their pay to market rate. Example, an existing employee with proven performance is earning 3.8k and is requesting for a raise to 4.2k. The company rather wait till the employee leaves and hire someone new for 4.2k without knowing for a fact if they fit the role.

Quiet quitting is really just working your job as per normal. It's made to sound bad by using the word 'quitting' and also using the term 'bare minimum requirement' as compared to just 'requirement'. Honestly, it is like a huge prisoner's dilemma. If every employee "works together" by quiet quitting, then we are selling less labour and getting more pay. However, if one quiet quits and the others go above and beyond, then those going above and beyond will benefit will raises and increment. If every employee goes above and beyond, then the employer will be able to get away with giving less while getting more productivity out of the employees.

I started quiet quitting when all my good results and efforts yielded no AWS, and I didn't get my salary (I got it 3 months later). During that period, when I refused to delete my annual leave, I was labelled as ungrateful.

if the employee is not executive level, I don't think they should work beyond agreed work hours because they won't be duly compensated for the extra time they put in. If they hold shares in the company, it will be a different matter because they are invested in the company. In one of the news broadcast, a worker from china mentioned he used to work really hard for the company and now he just do what is required regardless of quality because he felt work is pointless. I think people are getting more disillusioned by work and no longer identify with companies that do not take care of its workers.

I feel like it's also due to the fact where in the olden days, we are always taught to find a well paying job that we may not enjoy just to earn more and provide for ourselves but you still have to work hard just to put food on the table. And then the society progress and now we talk about quiet quitters because since they don't like what they do and they are only getting paid they just do the bare minimum. I feel like if everyone choose to work in a job they like or enjoy, they will naturally go above and beyond even without benefits because you enjoy what you do and hence you would not think of quiet quitting or just do bare minimum.

Why should one expected to job hop for pay increment? If the company reap profit, it’s contributed by the employee as well, no? The thought process is quite lame.

Company pays you already. You weren't doing it for free. Why should they pay you more? I haven't received a payrise for 7 years. Every year I told boss I am waiting, he keeps telling me times are bad etc but still company make profit. I have job hopped 5 MNC companies and each time 20 to 40% rise. Now hit the ceiling. It's year 8 now, I got $100 raise. I am nearly 50.

To be honest, quite quitting is within the contract. However, the rotting people should be fired. Mainly because it is a conflict against the contract. I have had someone done that to me and I told them if I do their work, they have to pay me. My time and effort is based on the pay.. so, do not encourage rotters

Quiet quitting existed a long time ago, we just didn't have a term for it back then. It's commonly found in places where OTs are plenty, mountains of last minute work tied together with quiet quitter colleagues that makes work processes difficult. Making it a place to rot than a place to grow. Ultimately, the team will start to get low morale and be influenced to quit or make a move.

Hey guys (and gal),... I do like and follow your shows and have been very entertained with thought provoking topics... For this episode, kinda let down as I feel not really well researched and explained. "quiet quitting" is a thing and very different to other kinda "deadwood" behavior that's constantly and forever been in the work culture. Which the team keeps referring to throughout. Lol... You may need to do another episode as you lump these 2 types and did not address quiet quitting at all. That's my opinion. But great work overall and keep it up!

haha. these people really take their audience for a fool. perhaps jon knows that a huge portion of their crowd belongs to the gen z and he is trying to influence his future employees not to have this mindset? quiet quitting is the way to go man. i’m the same age as jon and in the finance industry so definitely know what it means to hustle especially with all the bankers, equity analysts and traders around you left and right. your time and energy is your life, and time spent is time you will never get back. when you hustle for startups, you must know that the bosses hustle bc they are the owners of the firms. if the firm eventually does well and become valued at $100m? that multimillion dollar company is their asset, not yours. at best you get employee stock options, but you income is meagre. don’t be fooled by your bosses’ lives and think you have that holy responsibility to live up to their expectations. all you get is a pay check. quiet quitting is acting your wage. to them, their firm is their baby. but until the day you own an equivalent shareholding, act your wage and leave at 5pm

I took some time to think about this. To be fair, the people discussing are upper management with a stake in the company, of course it's in their interest for their employees to go the extra mile. However, as an employee, if our job scope specifies xxx duty, and we complete it diligently, why should we not be promoted? If the upper management expects more of the employee, it should be clearly stated in the contract or it should be clarified to the employee upon promotion. Everybody should be compensated for the work they do. If someone works harder, it should be seen as a a "exceed expectations" not a "meet expectations". Therefore, I don't agree with jon when he said that he will fire the employee who coasts at work. (P.S Love this podcast and watched every episode since the beginning.)

The job market rate is increasing. So even if old employee is doing the bare minimum, it takes more $ to buy the same effort. Even if you sack and hire new person, you'll still need to pay higher but need to retrain. To sum it up you pay for what you get.

Make a content on reserved seats on the MRT🤣....dont know whether it is just me....feel that reserved seats are kinda "abused"......aunties and uncles feeling that they have a right to the reserved seats even though they are not disabled or unfit....how younger people are judged for being inconsiderate by sitting on the reserved seats and not giving up the seats to these aunties and uncles.....in the end, people tend to avoid sitting on these reserved seats.....at times, younger people just want to rest after a long day of work, and some uncles/aunties who evidently went shopping (carrying bags of stuff) feel entitled to the reserved seats..... I do not think that not replying to messages outside work hours is considered quiet quitting... Bare minimum and having clear work ethics are very different, at least on my mind. For example, someone who wipes tables for a living. I feel quit quitting that job would mean I use the least about of water, wipe only stains I can see from far away, one day change water pail once, lazy take detergent also. Whereas, normal work ethics, I would ensure cloth is sanitary, table is sanitized whether can see stain or not. Don't need to be super siao on but at least got quality work done. In both situations I will not work OT not answer phone after work hours unless it's related to shift timings or explicitly required during contract signing.

Towards the end, it sounds like the core feeling behind these quiet quiting, bailan and all is despair and hopelessness. They have given up on the idea of achieving or striving because no matter how hard they try they either feel they are met with a wall of resistance that is unbreakable (it could be a system, process, circumstantial, national/global economic climate, etc.) Maybe some haven't tried yet and decided to give up because they hear stories or read despressing articles of how shitty the world is becoming OR Maybe some have already tried and have sacrificed too much to try and risk anything more --> possibly leading to a somewhat selfish nature. I do...unfortunately....have the same sentiments that the world now appears to be bleakier and dysfunctional than 10, 15 years ago (or perhaps i was too young and naive back then to realise it in the 2010s). However, I still have a grain of hope, a whisper of faith....is there really an explanation to help this culture become less rampant as time passes?

If quiet quitting means everyone doing their own job right, then it's great! A team of ronaldo/messi can't win championship, likewise a team of "above and beyond" folks won't see there are easier way to get things done... more than likely they will strive to do more so to impress others and complicate things further. 4 days school week for RI has proven to be better, covid has speed up digital transformation.. so the question is.. can today's leader accept the fact that a lazy plan could be a better plan?
