I'm proud of my US history teacher in high school. He was telling us that the civil war was over slavery. One white guy raised his hand and said "Excuse me, it was actually about states' rights." And my teacher looked at him and said "No, you're right. It was about states' rights. Specifically, it was about states' rights to say it was okay to OWN HUMAN BEINGS. That's it. All the other "states' rights" crap came after."

No, that's wrong, all the federal government taxation and tariffs on southern agriculture came before. The emancipation proclamation didn't come until 2 years into the war and it only freed slaves in states that had left the Union, the other 3 states that had not joined the confederacy got to keep their slaves till the war was over. Using Slavery as a hot button propaganda issue was a strategy for gaining support for a war that was not going well for the North. The only way the war started because of slavery is, in a way, that the Southern Aristocracy were making so much money off of the free labor that they were living a lifestyle that made the North jealous and they wanted some of that money. So, they tried to get that money in many ways, which is why the South starting screaming about States Rights, if the South had started selling them raw goods for half the price instead of turning around and exporting it to Europe and then getting hit with federal export tariffs, there would never have been a Civil War and Slavery would have been kept in this country for another 100 years, because the war was really about money. Abolitionists were few and far between, only 10% of people in the Union considered themselves Abolitionists when the war started and 65% of people claimed to be Abolitionists after the war was over. So, that anti-slavery propaganda campaign that started 2 years after the war began worked SO WELL, people who don't study history a lot like I do STILL think the Civil War was fought to free the slaves today. When the blunt fact is that 90% of people in the North didn't give a shit about slaves when the war began. It was ACTUALLY about the Federal Government proving its dominance and power over the state, which is taken for granted today, but when the country was founded each colony was told it had the right to govern itself with no higher power having the power to make laws in each state, that's why each state has its own legislature and governor. The only reason the Federal laws superceed the State laws today almost automatically is because of the Civil War. So, it was about STATES RIGHTS, because states did not ONLY lose the right to OWN HUMAN BEINGS, they also lost all rights to make any LAWS at all EVAH, that could not be completely reversed or changed by a Federal Court. It gave the Federal Government the ultimate usurping power over anything a State and all of its citizens wanted to do. For example, the Utah Territory wanted to become a State but was denied by the federal government because Washington didn't like polygamy.. it wasn't allowed to become a state until the Mormons decided NOT to be polygamists anymore. This kind of Federal Authority over States did not exist BEFORE the civil war and has existed ever since. States can still make their own laws, but whenever the Federal government wants to they can PASS federal laws that TRUMP state laws. Right now Trump is trying to do that in CA about air pollutant restrictions and he has the power to force them to change BECAUSE of the Civil War. Federal Authority over States grew by leaps and bounds following the Civil War enabling them to do things they would never have been able to do with each state thinking they had the right to make their own laws and govern themselves. Prohibition, the Federal Draft, desegregation and hundreds of other federal programs would not have been possible BEFORE the civil war, because each state would have had to pass laws to enable each program and you know there would have been 6-12 that would not have gone along with the idea. So, the civil war changed that way this country works fundamentally with federal authority usurping all other authority, which it DID NOT have that kind of authority BEFORE the civil war. So, saying the Civil War is about Slavery is right in the sense that, that is ONE OF THOUSANDS of issues the federal government can override the powers of the state and tell a state what to do and how to live in ways they never could b4 the war.

The Federal government under the Constitution was written as much stronger thanks to the weakness of the Articles government. If you want to make an argument for why the Federal Government is as powerful as it is today FDR's administration is far more responsible.

Sinéad McBride but there were economic benefits to the south, we don’t know the context to the assignment. It’s important to analysis history with an unbiased aspect either direction. This allows us to to learn the lessons derived from said history the best. However all the other ones like how many slaves picked apples or whatnot are blatantly racist and inexcusable.
@sineadmcbride90984 жыл бұрын
@@jacksonbf I see what you mean, but I still think that even if the south "needed" slaves, slavery had no positive aspects. It's inhumane. And yes, I agree those math assignments are horrible. Who would even think about something like that?
@bradenfouts31694 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really matter if you don't think slavery had no positive aspects because that isn't the point of the assignment. I don't disagree with the assignment because it could have been used to teach students how to think. It shows kids how to draw their own conclusions and understand history better. In other words, the point of the assignment could be to teach kids how to think not what to think. I'm assuming that neither of us would like it if the kids were asked to talk about only the advantages of slavery because we would say that kids are being indoctrinated. I think that it would be unacceptable to force children to view things in a certain way no matter what the topic is. Is it only acceptable for children to be indoctrinated because it conforms to your world view? This kid didn't deserve an A because he only completed half of the assignment.
@austinkeller67534 жыл бұрын
Are y’all just dumb or are y’all racist. The paper clearly says what are the positives to slavery and is titled “The Life of Slaves: A Balanced View”. I’m going to assume that there were no benefits for the lives of slaves. And yes, the South did see many benefits to slave owning, but calling that a “positive” is wrong. The student can be taught the history without trying to reframe slavery as something worthy of analyzing in a positive light. Shameful.
@bradenfouts31694 жыл бұрын
I don't understand how you can argue that people you don't even know are racist or dumb. This sort of name-calling is not productive in a reasonable, civil discussion and these ad hominem attacks don't increase the logical fidelity of your argument. I agree that trying to convince kids to believe slavery was good would be deplorable. I stated this in my previous comment when I said that it would be wrong to ask kids to only talk about the positives of slavery. I think slavery is terrible, but I think that children should be allowed to make up their own minds. I think that children should not be indictrinated into beleiving the subjective views of others at schools no matter what the topic is or how controversial it is. I think this allows children to learn to think logically and it allows parents to teach thier children thier values. I also do not understand how it is "wrong" to state that some people benefitted economically from slavery. Whether it was a terrible thing overall does not change the fact that there were some positive aspects for some individuals. Facts don't care about your feelings and it is a fact that some people benefitted from slavery. If no one benefitted from it, slavery wouldn't have happened.

Actually blacks voted even during slavery. You had to own land which was majority owned by white men, not very many blacks met the requirements to vote, and neither did women. But laws were passed changing the requirements to Americans could vote. It was basically a small group of people who had the rights to vote. Actually at the height of slavery 94% of Americans didn't own slaves. Only 6% of the US actually had slaves when slavery was at it's worse. Black people who could vote also owned slaves of their own race. And one of our histories worst slave owners was actually a black man. The more ya know.

Are you talking about New Jersey? www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/why-black-people-and-women-lost-vote-new-jersey-180967186/ Also William Ellison was not by any measure one of the worst slave owners. he was the worst black slave owner as he also supported the Confederacy, But he was nowhere near as bad as white slave owners. www.snopes.com/fact-check/facts-about-slavery/
@countdowntomidnight6926 жыл бұрын
@@Satsujinki1973 Your right about Ellison, but I'm referring to the entire US Constitution. The USC was written so landowners could vote and no one else. There were even white men who couldn't vote in every state. Any Smithsonian articles are pretty much toilet paper after they were exposed by former employees for burying historical documents. And as far as the slave owners, you're going to have to go through Freedom of Information Act and request those documents in paper. I will find the exact request I made and I will get the information on here so you can request it yourself. You will have to do some actual research instead of relying on Google, but when I get the documents at least I can narrow your search.

The slavery questions was out of line. And they wonder why we have so much hostility about it.
@_buany87014 жыл бұрын
Binky D'Eath Hi! I know your question wasn’t directed towards me, but in my experience Americans do learn about worldwide slavery. I’m in my freshmen year taking Ap world history where, obviously, you learn the history of the entire world. This includes the early civilizations’ way of early forced labor, slavery. Now, high school students get four years to take this Ap class early. If they don’t, I’m sure many colleges have this as a required class. What I have learned from that class is that the civilizations or empires always had some type of hierarchy, and those at the bottom were some form of peasants and right under, slaves. But even though slavery happened everywhere, no matter where it was, it was wrong. I don’t think that the fact that there was white slaves should in any way make up for the more recent African slave era, nor am I saying that is what you are trying to say. But just because white people were slaves aswell, doesn’t mean that there isn’t racial tension and discrimination against black people by white people today. During the time, the trans-Atlantic slave trade where African American slaves were being bought and sold was THE way of obtaining slaves and it was ONE of the last ways slaves were traded until it was abolished. It wasn’t white people being widely enslaved at the time , it was black people. And many white people disagreed with this abolishment because it was simply how they made money. And now that they WERE free, no one wanted them. They were pushed into poverty housing and still weren’t treated as equals. They didn’t have nearly as many rights as the white man, and were unfairly discriminated against and hated. They were separated because of their race. It was disgusting. It was hard for them to earn money to survive and as you can imagine, they had to turn to other ways. This creates this stereotype that sticks with us to this day. 2020. African Americans to this day are still treated unfairly by white people. Whether white people where enslaved too in some point in history doesn’t matter when speaking about African American discriminators today. Today in America, they have privilege that African Americans do not. My response isn’t to test your knowledge, nor am I directly putting you down. But we don’t accuse every white person online of being racist. If it doesn’t apply to you, it doesn’t apply to you. I just find it kind of crazy how many times people have told me that white people were enslaved too and/or they were enslaved first. It doesn’t justify the racism that was received back then, nor the racism that is received today. Also, I believe the questions about slavery on that math homework was wrong. Point blank. Ok thanks.
@Su0ived4 жыл бұрын
all good guys, but slave history in the US is not more recent than slave history in Europe, people in concentration camps in Eastern Europe (in both nazi and soviet) are from the 19th century. That was literally free labor. Not trying to undermine anyone’s history, just merely correcting a fact.

From My Roots; it's a sad reality! We've seen over and over again at Vote!
@PorchaMoney174 жыл бұрын
@Binky D'Eath when I was in school they did teach about slavery in other countries it's just that the slavery they teach about the US isn't the full story. they only teach parts and then once we become older is when we learn about the more horrific things that truly went on that is kind of swept under the rug and not talked about as if it didn't exist.and I don't know if you've ever read the Willie Lynch letter but that's another really big thing that has told the black community because it is something that has created the type of environment that blacks have with one another. Also a good person to look at as far as understanding is Jane Elliott.
@PorchaMoney174 жыл бұрын
@Binky D'Eath when he says that whites being slaves doesn't excuse recent black slavery it's more so because of the simple fact that whites have privilege now and slaverybehavior that was put towards them is no longer and action whereas even after blacks were freed from slavery there was still slave-like actions towards us even after the civil Rights movement there were still slave-like actions towards us and even in today's society it may not be at the extreme that it was when we were slaves or even at the civil Rights movement but there are a lot of underlying issues that are kind of just swept under the rug and made to us to seem as if we're not going through it and it's just in our heads. it's a many blacks minds seeming as if people who say okay well whites were enslaved are trying to justify the horrific way that blacks were enslaved and continue to be persecuted. in our minds it would be the equivalent of saying OK the Holocaust happen but blacks were enslaved to.in many African Americans minds it's kind of demeaning the tragedy that we went through for example the Willie Lynch letter is kind of something I read when I got older and it blew my mind. it's an issue where we have to go to museums to truly learn about the complete history of slavery because a lot of things aren't said and we know that not all white people are racist and that not all white people would condone it but to sit back and kind of discredited is a slap in the face. I hope what I said didn't offend you but help you understand a little bit more

The police, the society, the businesses, everything needs to change. It's a million wonders to me there aren't riots in the streets. I grieve for every incident; it is all so heartbreaking. "Existing While Black" seems to be a crime in this country. ANYTHING. I get followed around stores like I'm about to steal something - in my case just because I'm not particularly feminine. Butchness is apparently also a crime in this country - never mind that I am a respected mentor teacher working for peanuts in a public school with at-risk teens for 14 years now (despite the known asbestos and toxins in the crumbling walls, the rotting bats, poison, and bat guano drifting through the ceiling tiles, and the migraine-inducing off-gassing from the repeatedly flooded carpets). Taxpayers should NEVER have to pay the debt for a racist, trigger-happy, psychopathic cop....We ALWAYS foot the bill, but have ZERO say on discipline and prosecution as pertains to police misconduct and brutality. That is WRONG! Also, link body cams directly to the State Attorney General and state head FBI offices....and make it a felony for any cop who disables, tampers with or turns off his body cam. If you shoot someone, and turned off your body cam, you automatically get fired, charged and lose your pension. Further, impose a points system, as with driver's licenses. After a certain amount of corroborated complaints of brutality or excessive force against you, you are automatically fired and prohibited from working law enforcement or security....ANYWHERE. Start firing sargeants, lieutenants and chiefs who cover up cops' crimes, as well...STOP allowing corrupt and bloodthirsty cops to "resign" and just move on to another police precinct, like the Catholic church does with touchy-feeley priests...that solves nothing. Also, impose stiffer sentences for cops convicted of corruption, murder, etc. They are SWORN to PROTECT. They MUST be held to a higher standard. Boxers are sentenced more harshly than other citizens for assault, due to their fighting prowess. Apply the same logic to cops.... These are all not mine but they are great ideas. Liability insurance, which price goes up if misconduct happens, similar to the ones doctors and lawyers have, can be used instead of the pension fund. The point is that the city doesn’t pay the misconduct fines because that’s taxpayers money and apparently we have no part in the decision how to prevent misconduct

Well, it is a meme. It's actually never been literally true, and since 9/11 gave them the excuse to remove little things like due process, civil rights, freedom from torture, and being convicted only if the evidence made conviction only possible in the case of beyond a "reasonable doubt." Today you can be picked up anywhere, your house can be invaded, your pets and kids killed, or your spouse or your houseguests. All the government has to do to cover their ass, even if they blow your house the fuck up, or your neighborhood, is to claim (without evidence of any kind) to the media that either you were a secret terrorist, along with your dog and baby, or a "drug kingpin." Once Rachel Maddow or Sean Hannity spouts out of their pie-hole "alleged member of ISIS" or "contract killer for the Mexican Cartel" tell them to just put a fork in you, because you are DONE! Even if they retract it later, which they do so often that you'd think they'd slow down with the defamation of character, 99% of the television audience will remember the big clusterfuck that was your first arrest, and about 1% will remember the tiny story on page 8 that was them apologizing and admitting they fucked up..

Well, depends. If you got into policing because you want to be an efficiant police officer, it'd be great - you can drive up straight to somebody selling drugs or breaking into a shop, because those creeps, too, usually think that if it's not in a car, it's not a cop. And you don't get stuck in traffic, and you are more approachable to anybody who wants to report something. If your idea was that you'll have cool car chases and basically get paid for play-acting Lethal Weapon, then yes, it'd probably be a let-down.

Even the supposedly liberal youth are raised in a conservative way and deep down, they're still conservatives. USA and India are so different in that aspect. While liberalism is mainstream over there (mainly due to Hollywood), conservatism is mainstream over here in India.
