I saw the doc on an airplane flying to Europe last Fall and was blown away. I lived in NYC in 1969 and I hadn't heard of it because all the news was about Woodstock that summer.

Watching "Summer of Soul" was a walk through ALL the songs I remember from my early childhood growing up in Dallas. To SEE and HEAR all these artists and songs and not having ever seen them before feels like a crime!...IS a crime! I'm white and it's not like these songs weren't EVERYWHERE, but all I ever heard about was Woodstock. Thank you so much, Questlove! This is a gift to the world!

Have been waiting for this since Questlove interviewed on NPR, possibly Fresh Air and spoke about this project. Then heard interview with Marilyn McCoo and her trepidation about performing and being accepted by the crowd. Old fashioned, no television so on a waitlist cuz we get Netflix by mail. The anticipation is killing me!!

And, I would just like to add that my first experience of Harlem was when I was trying to visit Columbia University, because I wanted to attend law school there. I missed the subway stop and ended up in Harlem. I was terrified, because young, blonde white women are taught they should be terrified in Harlem. I was trying to cross the street as quickly as possible to get to the platform going back down south, and I felt a hand on the back of my neck. Some kind soul was jerking me back onto the sidewalk as I was walking into traffic to get away from Harlem. Columbia didn't want me, but I learned an invaluable lesson that day. Believing stereotypes can be dangerous to your health. (A few years later, in LA, a Black attorney told me not to go to South Central, though, so maybe it's just a crapshoot.)
@saschamaj2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if "Black Erasure" is an appropriate term to use here. There was an all-star concert with 100,000 spectators that could be considered the "Black Woodstock" which was filmed and made into a documentary: Wattstax or the Watts Summer Festival that took place in August of 1972. It may not have had the overall star power of the Harlem festival, but it had the historic "I am somebody" speech of Reverend Jesse Jackson, Kim Weston leading a choir of Black Youth through the Black National Anthem "Lift Every Voice & Sing", the Staples singers and finally Isaac Hayes delivering historic performances. This documentary did showcase a similar moment in time of black excellence. This documentary should be mentioned in unison with The Summer of Soul. The footage of the Harlem festival could have been picked up throughout the decades by any number of well-connected and wealthy black people in show business (Quincy Jones, Spike Lee, Oprah Winfrey, etc.) or maybe even BET. The fact that it wasn't is to me more an indication that the owners of the footage lacked the initiative to shop around for producers rather than some sort of nebulous conspiracy to "erase" positive black history. Why did it take until now for Questlove to be presented with the footage?
@laurafay27962 жыл бұрын
I would ask why was it so difficult to find a producer for a film of all these dynamite concerts?? Because as Quest pointed out, people would relate and say "families just like mine," and the picture of Black Americans relaxing and enjoying themselves was not an image the media wanted to put forth. It would create empathy , howver division was the goal
@Akilahfoye2 жыл бұрын
Don't think he means intentional erasure but erasure by omission, neglect, not knowing and not thinking something is significant. But hey those tapes survived 50 years. Thanks for mentioning the other documentary, is it available on any streaming platforms?
@ExTriv2 жыл бұрын
Well if you saw the documentary, the promoters did try to shop it around, only to be told no by every Hollywood studio.

I'll be definitely checking this documentary out. To learn that this point of history existed nobody knew about it that's crazy to think about but also it does make me wonder what caused the erasure of it? There's probably so many factors to that question but like what's the root cause? You would think something like this would being told by generation to generation and then it evolves onto black Twitter but seems not. I'm glad that Questlove is highlighting it. I want to see this event for myself. A black Woodstock...... wow I'm just trying to get my head around that it sounds really cool

I talk to other white people a lot about the levels or grades of racism, & I too have talked about how white people think as long as I'm not throwing the n-word around, I'm not calling for lynchings, I must not be racist, but that's overt racism, the darkest of the levels. But thinking of black people as less intelligent, or more likely to be criminals, is also racism, also hurtful, also destructive. And even white people who say that are fine with black people, but they are so loud, or make comments about music, that's racism too. We aren't all monsters, but we all can help fix things. Analyze your perceptions, your assumptions, where do they come from, how did you get those ideas, & what are your motives?

I have never heard the term "code switching" before I am so curious how it applies to the performances.
@PatrickEvina48912 жыл бұрын
I haven’t watched the documentary yet, but code-switching describes how African Americans change the way they talk to sound more White. They usually do it when they work for White people who don’t accept Black people’s dialects (e.g. AAVE), hairstyles, clothing, etc. So they try to blend in to make sure that those White people accept them. I know that in the music industry of the 1960’s, Motown used code-switching to make some of their artists (re: Diana and the Supremes) sound White. It worked ‘cause they had a lot of number-one records that White people loved.
@RJCHOICE2 жыл бұрын
@@Stevie-J It may be true that the examples of "code switching" as you called them are not about race relations, or this nations foundation on white supremacy, but the example that Quest Love is referring to is in the context of conforming to avoid racist backlash, and or resentment. Just because "everything" is not about black and white, or racism does not negate the fact that some things are.
