As a non American, I often follow these discussions about gun violence and the constitutional right of every US citizen to bear arms. So Iam not against the US (as I actually hope to live and work in the US in the near future for a year or two maybe), and hence ask to just explain the following to me without to much hate. When the constitution was written, the right to bear arms was something very logical to protect American citizens. It was a country in the build up, and this was a logical step. However back then gun technology was pretty basic and you would have to reload your rifle after each shot or have a revolver. But how can you arm every citizen who feels the need with a semi automatic rifle or even a hand grenade. These are weapons designed to kill other people as fast as possible, and were disigned for military or special ops/police use. Surly not for the average person, who might also be unknowingly mentally unstable, which doesn't get recognized due to the lack of background checks. So wouldnt it be correct and in line with the constitution to better monitor the distribution of military grade weaponry?

+Al Malone I think something people forget is that when the constitution was written the ONLY gun a civilian could acquire would be a musket, and rarely a flintlock pistol. Unlike what ThePoonky said, in the late 18th century, rifles were a very rare expensive military grade weapon that were still only found in Europe, while revolvers hadn't been invented yet. I don't know how much you know about muskets, but the only way you can kill someone with one who is further than 6 feet away from you is if there are 6 other people standing next to you also shooting their muskets at the same target. In other words, guns, when the constitution was written, were only of any use AS PART OF AN ORGANISED MILITIA. Without one they were essentially useless.

In that time period, this would have been quite important, because yes we were a new nation and would need to defend ourselves from nature/natives/outside forces. And some people will argue that the Police or even military would be what was described as "a militia", however, in my opinion, those are not 'the people', but instead are an extension of the government. Now, this is my opinion, so I am not offering any hard data or anything like that for this, but I think the people should be armed, to protect themselves from criminals, terrorists and all that, but also to protect themselves from a tyrannical government entity.

Where I'm from we have strict laws on everything from rocks, to knives, to guns... and the U.S. still issue travel advisories against us when our crime rate goes up by a few percentage points... by the way our crime rate is never even close to crime rates anywhere in the U.S.A.... we have an average of 22 murders a year with a population of around 300, 000 and most of them are drug/gang related. Maybe the U.S. should try stricter gun laws just to see what happens. What's the worst that can happen?

Automatic guns are already highly restricted and you are dreaming if you think you can get one. Also, the gun laws need to be the same everywhere because you can't determine who has a certain right based on what city they live in. Guns are not to protect us from the government coming with full force on the public. But if the government tries to take all the guns they will probably have a mandatory turn in for guns. They can't go to each house and search for guns but registering your guns allows the government to know if you have guns whick could allow them to take the guns. What about self defense against attackers or the defense for others. If someone wants to steal, kill, or attack, they aren't going to attack someone with a gun. Guns are an equalizer. It doesn't matter what stature you have, you can protect yourself just add much as anyone else. Also the 2nd amendment wasn't made at the time where swords were what they used to defend it attack, but of course it could protect you. I recommend a video by Steven Crowder where he talks about why the 2nd amendment wasn't about muskets. You also said guns are fine for hunting and protection. They are useful tools and ever since Hillary Clinton's assault rifle ban has ended the number of violent attacks or gun attacks ( I don't remember which) has gone down. I understand your opinion, seeing as your only experience and knowledge about guns comes from the media, however, there are many problems with banning gun.
