Yes, those are the "backs" of an actual pennies. Stitch also looks like he is sitting behind a mound of food. It is called a "Five and Dime".

Fun fact. In 1955 6.76 cents had the same purchasing power as a whole 2024 dollar. I know this because I have a 1955 viewmaster booklet ( came with a vintage 56 viewmaster viewer) that says you could get 3 reels for a dollar, and I went on eBay and Etsy and found the equivalent brand new 2020s product at cheapest is 15 bucks.

One of my hobbies is metal detecting. Those are all real pennies. Pennies from 1982 and older are mostly copper. Anything after 1982 is mostly zinc. They started minting shield back pennies in 2009.

Canada still produced copper pennies after the US had stopped until 1996, and because the copper in the pennies were worth more than the penny people from the US would buy them up for their scrap value. Canada got rid of all pennies in 2012 because they cost more to produce than they were worth.

Note Adam we collected the pennies in the early 2,000’s when my kids were little(they loved to crank the wheel) and learned to get shiny pennies from cast members then immediately put them in the collector books because it would keep them in pristine condition instead of brushing against each other . Just a pro tip. My kids now in their 20’s still love looking at them today.

Did you ever collect the limited edition WDW 50th Anniversary Medallions? I have every single one (50 characters), even the special ones from the original 1971 resorts (Contemporary, Polynesian and Fort Wilderness). Each Medallion matches the 50th Anniversary statues that they had scattered around the parks during the celebration period. I bought a book on Amazon that would specifically fit the size of the Medallions. I love my completed collection so much! I don’t think I could ever sell it on eBay. It took effort to buy all the Medallions but (to me) it was a really fun activity! 🙂

The ones with the shield are actual pennies. Theyve made a few diffeeent penny designs over the years, like they did with quarters. They also use blank slugs for the machines. My best guess is they refill with the actual pennies when short on thr blanks.

I've been collecting squished pennies since the 1990s .back when you got to turn the crank and squish the penny you put in the machine . Now they are just copper slugs and most are automatically squished. I have several books...including squished quarters. I don't like the automatic ones . I only like the ones that use actual pennies that is squished by turning the crank and there are very few of them now.

Pennies used in penny machines are real US pennies. Japan and other Asian countries use brass blanks. Europe uses euro coins typically.
