I recently attempted adding a pair of unrelated, large, but still immature balfouri to a communal enclosure. They were staying in opposite sides of enclosure(first bad sign). After one molted and It and outgrew the other, it chased the smaller one out of its burrow, and chased it away to the other side of the enclosure. It displayed some interesting territorial behaviours. It’s been reported to work before, but I would not advise adding unrelated t’s after they reach a molt where they start displaying their mature colour
@maxwellmolleran5943
@maxwellmolleran5943 3 жыл бұрын
I was told that if you want to add to your communal you're supposed to rehouse all of them into a new enclosure. This is another thing I'll keep in mind when/if I add to my small communal.
@Baffi_
@Baffi_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@maxwellmolleran5943 that’s what I did. Setup a nice enclosure for them, with lots of spots to start borrows, or web tunnels. When they touched each other, they would quickly move away. Eventually one burrowed under some wood, and the other made a web tunnel on the other side of the enclosure. I waited it out for a couple weeks. I saw no action from either. And then realized one in front had been in premolt, because she molted in her web tunnel. And a week later a some motion by the other ones burrow, and it came running out, with her behind, threat posturing and guarding the burrow. She took a few steps forward and slapped, waved her legs a bit, took a couple steps more and slapped again. Did that about four times until the other T started to walk away. Removed the one who got evicted right after that
@naicon971
@naicon971 3 жыл бұрын
Isn't that the reason you usually see communals in quite small enclosures? So there won't be any territorial issues?
@Baffi_
@Baffi_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@naicon971 that’s supposedly not the case with balfouri. If raised together, they never seem to make their own territories and get defensive, even in larger enclosures. And this was only a 12”x12”x12” cube terrarium. I’m sure there would have been no problems if I raised the T’s from sling size up to now together

@The Dark Den, Well... as long you keep the Gigas fed, they have no reason to attack each other. Most predatorial creatures tend to turn tame as long they are fed. But granting them a large enclosure also comes with the risk of them becomin' territorial. Would you fancy trying to keep a bit of water in the set-up with the Gigas? I know you didn't have a great success last time. But if you keep it to a single shallow corner and use acrylic/glass as a separator and rocks in front and across the glass. It shouldn't wick. Then just add a small pump house somehow to keep the water from turning stale or just manually change it. Sure, they don't need it. But I still think you should limit the area they can bury into, as much as possible. The ideal set-up would be something akin to this, I think: i.imgur.com/KX7HJa3.png Keeps the spiders from webbing the glass unnecessarily, while restraining their land section so they stay more grouped up.

Balforis are so beautiful such lovely colouring. And i adore heavy webbing spiders. So with these Balfouri you have both. I really want to get some of these gorgeous t's. Your group look like theyre all happy living together which is really so nice to see. Its been wonderful seeing them growing over time since you got them. Funny enough one of the first videos i watched of yours was of this amazing communal . So happy that they seem to be doing so well. Best of luck with the little babies joing the gang. Lets hope this keeps going well for all of them for a long long time yet. Thanks for another great video. Chriss 🇬🇧

FYI, if you want to increase the webbing, I would suggest you increase the objects within the enclosure. After all, they web that which they claim. They web that which their web can attach to and build a structure around. You only have one object in there for them to web. If you place a few more objects in there, especially closer to the glass edges, you may see what you’re after; as they’ll likely web from the objects to the central object to the glass. Just what you want. But, with only one central object...good luck. It just isn’t enough to trigger their webbing instincts. =)

Petko big fan here! I've got an idea for the 2nd comunal enclosure... You could do some hardscape on the ceiling making it like is under the earth, with roots and pieces of soil dropping and then some central structure "connected" with the branch you have on top to keep the 360 view, to have some sort of continuity. Just an idea if fits the habit of those animals of course. I've always wanted to do something like that, it would be awesome 👌 Keep up with the good work, greetings from Italy

There are three nymphal stages in Monocentropus balfouri . III nymphs are slightly different from the other stages of nymphs, namely they already have hair on their bodies. This may confuse the breeder into thinking they already have spider veins in the incubator. III nymphs molt to the spider stage after about 3 weeks.

It was four rehousings, I think. You did one for the mold and ended up using that old enclosure for your new P. Metallica that got big enough last year. I think it was the ventillation holes and the background you replaced that gave it away. I've watched you rehouse them for times from the beginning to now when you moved them into the new Dark Den.

The wireless microphone idea is top, I hope you get that webbed up thingy ^^°, I have to put a balfouri communal alltogether as well, but I´m pulling it far behind because I don´t want to. It´s a big adult female and two 3cm big females in a Braplast :P By the way the Hysterocrates cf. gigas communal will work way better than with N.incei. From my experience and knowledge the only communals that can and will work are actually some african birdspiders, You can even keep any Harpactirinae except Harpactira spp. and Harpactirella spp. from the cocoon till 3/4 moult alltogether, if done right! And last but not least our asian arboreal ornamental beauties Poecilotheria spp. (there´re some exceptions yes P.ornata and another)
