@TheDave3332 жыл бұрын
25 babies would be okay in a 10 Gallon tank for a while (until they're ready to breed), then those babies will be making more babies. When they're grown up keep them in a 20 Gallon long tank. You're going to need more tanks eventually, or a way to find them all new homes. 😁

Very interesting, question, how would this structure evolve? like what are the in between steps, maybe a male aiming better with it's tube at the eggs before other males, then they start aiming where it comes out till they eventually get close enough to stick it in and i imagine the female at first just laid the eggs right then and there but eventually started to eject them at a later time when they are more developed. Is there a fish with incomplete internal fertilization like a transitory behavior evolving towards internal fertilization?
@Rainkit2 жыл бұрын
You might be able to peice that together from looking at other live bearing fish. Forming a tube seems to be universal but how the tube is made differs a lot. I've been breeding split fins, another livebearing fish. They only have an anal fin with a notch in it. When mating the two halves of the anal fin come together to form a tube and they pass the sperm onto the female. Mating for them also takes a lot longer because the male doesn't penetrate the female as deeply as a guppy. That might have been stage one for early guppies. Split fins also have a problem where sometimes he sperm packet falls off. Not a problem for split fins, being that they are rather large and can live for several years in the wild. Wild guppies, however, might only have a few months, so being able to fully penetrate the female would give you a better change of reproducing.
@CMZneu2 жыл бұрын
@@Rainkit interesting, makes sense.
@TheDave3332 жыл бұрын
As I was writing the narration for this, I often wondered about the in-between steps that it would take to get us to a full on livebirth. I had trouble thinking of a way to gradually change and still be able to reproduce along the way. I even started to question evolution for a minute or two! Both the male and the female have to change, and they probably didn't both change at the same time. It would be an extremely complicated thing to coordinate. Goodeids might be a good place to look for a transitory behavior / structure towards internal fertilization. Some salamanders use internal fertilization without an intromittent organ. The male sets down a packet of sperm on the ground, and then the female comes along and picks it up, but she still lays eggs. So. internal fertilization, but no live birth.

No one has been able to answer my question yet. Is new sperm from a freshly done mating replace the old stocked sperm from previous males ?
@TheDave333 Жыл бұрын
The vitality of the sperm will deteriorate over time, so the older packets are not as healthy and active as the ones from more recent pairings. And there is this thing called sperm competition. Healthier males produce more high quality sperm, and apparently female guppies can choose to use sperm from specific males. This is known as Cryptic female choice (CFC). It refers to female-mediated processes occurring during or after copulation that result in biased sperm use in favor of preferred or compatible males. So, the female has some say in the matter. If you want more info research Cryptic Female Choice in guppies.

@@TheDave333 you're right, in the wild guppy fry have much more options to hide or/and escape from adults greedy for proteins including their mother. In aquarium with dense flora more fry survive. In the wild , when guppy population becomes too big they regulate it by eating fry that is late to hide 😆. Later they again produce babies like crazy... That's guppy's life !!!

I am breeding guppys any tips guys?
@TheDave3338 ай бұрын
Clean warm water 80 degrees F. If you use a hang on back filter be sure to cover the filter intake with an intake sponge filter to keep the babies from getting sucked up by the filter. Provide the babies with lots of places to hide so they don't get eaten by the other fish. Watch this video for more helpful advice. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p16Tc6CvjNV_j9U

@@TheDave333 thank you so much yes I also have soft water and heard they like harder water for breeding so I've been using aquarium salt and one of those slow dissolving magic sea shells also is it ok to keep them with whitecloud mountain minnows and Silvertip tetras so far as ive seen no fin nipping even on the smaller females my 20 gallon long has 5 whiteclouds 5 silvertips 4 male guppys and 11 female 4 otocinclus 2 panda Cory's [need to buy more for the school and one Cory I forget what type I have a 10 gallon hang on back w the sponge cover for water intake aswell as a 30 gallon aqueon hang on back aswell as 2 10 gallon sponge filters is this a good setup or no thanks for responding I know my tank might be a little heavily stocked edit I also have it heavily planted lots of hiding places rocks branches

If you'd really like to get the most out of your guppies and have a lot of babies, then you're better off keeping them without the minnows and the tetras, both of which will eat the baby guppies. Those silver tips can be quite active as well as nippy in small numbers. So, keep a close eye on them and the fins of your guppies. . . Breeding is always best done in a single species setup, and if that's your main goal you may want to consider having a tank just for guppies. It sound like you have more than enough filtration. You could probably get away with just using two large sponge filters. Be sure that there isn't too much of a current for the guppies, they don't typically do well where there's a lot of water movement. It strong current also makes it difficult for the babies. The fact that it's heavily planted really helps though. Time will tell. Just decide if you're getting enough baby guppies to keep you happy. It sound like an active tank that would be a lot of fun to sit and watch.

Red spot on young male gonopodium looks like wound. Guppies like constantly bite each other.

Hello again my friend. Yes, guppies do bite at each other, but it's not a wound. It's just a bit of color, same color as the fins.
